Central Bucks East coach Emma Rosenthal:
--On the game: “It was fantastic to kick off our season today with a win. I don’t believe we’ve opened with a win in the past four years, so it’s definitely exciting momentum to start with. We got off to a slow start but came back quickly after the early Quakertown goal. I’m especially proud that today was a complete team victory. Every single person on the varsity roster got game time and contributed to the win. We learned a lot from today’s game. I’m excited to see what we have to bring to the rest of the season.”
—Defensive props: “Our defense did a fantastic job today, led by goalkeeper Cam Puhalla with 12 amazing saves. Sam Lafferty, Katie Szczypiorski, Kate McCauley, Morgan Harrington, Brynn Williamson, and Harper Tomlinson all made great defensive plays.”
—Offensive standouts: “On offense, Brynn Bonargo, Syd Lafferty, and Emerson McFeely did a great job making things happen.”
Quakertown coach Peach Draper:
--On the game: “We came out on fire this morning, striking first just 3 minutes and 10 seconds into the game. On a corner, Cameron Landis delivered a slip pass to Paige Longacre, who buried it in the cage to give us the early lead.
“From there, the matchup turned into a hard-fought battle. We generated plenty of opportunities but couldn’t quite capitalize. Despite battling through a few injuries, we showed toughness and determination from start to finish. While this wasn’t the home opener result we hoped for, the effort and intensity displayed reflect the progress being made at practice.
“We are looking forward to carrying that work ethic into their next challenge, a highly anticipated home night game on Monday evening against Upper Perk.”
—Props: “Darcy Baxter and Anna Haberle both put in gritty performances in goal and we were in CB East's circle a lot.”
Up next: Quakertown will host Upper Perkiomen in a non-league game Monday (7pm), and Central Bucks East will host Downingtown East in a non-league game Tuesday.

Springfield Twp’s Grace Bell had a strong season debut in goal, making 5 saves, including several in 1-on-1 situations, while Abington’s Palmina D'Angelo (3 saves) and Keely Gallagher (6 saves) were equally impressive as the Ghosts and Spartans battled to a 1-1 tie in Friday’s season-opening SOL crossover.
“It was a great team effort for us today,” Abington coach Janine Larr said. “After working hard in practice this past week, the girls came out ready to play and made Springfield work for every play and scoring opportunity they had. It was probably some of the best field hockey I have seen between two very evenly matched teams. I’m very proud of how everyone played and stepped up today.”
Springfield coach Brianna Buckley had equally high praise for her squad.
“This was a great way to start the season opener, overtime on a hot Abington turf,” the Spartans’ coach said. “The cohesiveness is coming together.
“Both teams fought hard but couldn’t find the game-winner.”

“Abington held on to the lead until the fourth quarter, where Springfield was able to even the score when Klara Ochab netted a cross-net pass from Molly McGuckin. The score remained 1-1 through regulation. Despite a few good looks from both teams during OT, both goalies stepped up, and the game ended after OT in a 1-1 tie.”
--Props: “Abington’s senior mid Maeve Link was all over the field both offensively and defensively, displaying her ability to move the ball and help create offensive opportunities. She was joined by junior forward Addie Harrington, who received every ball sent to her and was able to help push the ball up the field to create offensive opportunities. Junior mid Gwen Judge also stepped up with hustle and speed. She played great defense and was key on the offensive end in getting the ball up the field and into Springfield's circle for scoring opportunities.
“On the defensive end, junior defensive back Morgan Gillette stepped up and made several huge plays, especially in OT, to prevent Springfield from getting the ball in the net. Senior defensive back Kirsten Sanders also made some big plays and worked hard to help prevent Springfield from getting scoring opportunities.

UPPER MORELAND 6, INTERBORO 0
(Submitted by Upper Moreland Field Hockey)
Upper Moreland came out fired up for its first game of the season!
This was an all-around team win for the Golden Bears, who have a very committed group of players with excellent senior leadership.
The offense exploded for 6 goals. Sophomore Olivia Torres had 2 goals and 3 assists, while senior Ella Gould received the game ball for her outstanding performance having a hand in the first 3 goals of the game. Gould started off the scoring with a shot in front of the cage off an assist from fellow senior Melissa Torpey, who did an excellent job controlling the ball on the right side of the field all day.
The Bears’—and Gould’s—second goal was off of a corner. Having been working hard on corners in preseason, the Bears focused on using their stickwork to cause Interboro to foul and set up Upper Moreland with more corners. The hosts got 13 corners, and did not allow any for Interboro. On the second corner of the game, Gould inserted the ball to Torres, who shot and Gould tipped it in. With time out in the first quarter, Torres ripped a drive from the top of the circle (assist Gould) to make the score 3-0.
Junior forward Soph Riehle scored in the second and third quarters off of assists from forward MJ Riley and Olivia Torres’ second assist. Torres was not done, as she added the final goal of the game unassisted to finish her 4-point performance.
Defensively, Torres had 6 successful takeaway tackles while Gould recorded 4.
Bears’ midfielders Bridget Hess (sophomore), Ella Gould and Taylor Pagano (sophomore) did an amazing job moving the ball up the field and not allowing Interboro to have scoring chances.
This team has worked very hard in the off-season playing winter league, summer league and some players went to a camp at Millersville. Today was a great start to what will hopefully be an awesome season for the Bears.
Up next: Upper Moreland will be on the road at William Tennent for its SOL opener Thursday.
Interboro 0 0 0 0 – 0
Upper Moreland 3 1 1 1 – 6
