Check out the recaps for SOL girls’ soccer teams in action Friday.
Non-league
Bensalem 2, Willliam Tennent 1
The Owls rallied in the second half to start their season off strong.
After playing on the back foot against the host Panthers, Bensalem's captains helped set a tone in the second half. Strong midfield play helped bring the Owls level and Falyn Savage's keen passing eye opened up a couple of prime scoring opportunities that Bensalem's Adrianna Posten and Mary Beck capitalized on, propelling the Owls to the big non-league win..
Scoring Summary

Second half

Bensalem coach Bob Crawford on the win: “They took it to us in the first half. We made half time adjustments and played a lot better.”
Standouts: “Kylie O’Neill, Falyn Savage and Jordyn Bell play really well in the midfield. Marieh Chavez really had a great second half. Sarah O’Neil and Mary Beck did a great job being captains by putting their input and supporting the team in a very positive way.”
Up next: William Tennent will host Wissahickon in a non-league game Monday, and Bensalem will host New Hope-Solebury in a non-league contest Tuesday.
BENSALEM 0 2 – 2
WILLIAM TENENNT 1 0 - 1
North Penn 6, Avon Grove 1
Coming off back-to-back District 1 Class 4A playoff appearances, the Knights faced a major question coming into the season: With Maddy Murphy, their ace scoring threat now in college at Buffalo, where were the goals going to come from?
It’s just one game, but it looks like the Knights are going to spread the wealth around this season. Five different players all netted a goal as North Penn rolled to a win under the lights at Crawford Stadium.
While North Penn lost one Murphy, they still have another in sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Murphy (Maddy’s younger sister), who anchored a stout effort from the team’s defense.
Scoring Summary
NP - Annaliese Marnien (Izzy Rudnick) 5th
NP - Jadyn Sperling (PK) 18th
NP - Izzy Rudnick (Bailee Charles) 25th
AG - 30th
NP - Lani Bachmann 57th
NP - Bailee Charles (Paula Fernandez) 65th
NP - Lani Bachmann (Alyssa Chartrand) 68th
North Penn coach Mike Rio on the win and offense: “Overall, a great team effort to start the year. Really proud of how we played and the way we were able to possess the ball and get chances. On the first goal, after nice build up, Izzy (Rudnick) played a ball through to Anna (Marnien) who played it smoothly into the side netting. The second goal occurred after Madi Morrow was taken down in the box and Jadyn (Sperling) stepped up and hit a great PK. The final goal of the first half started with our back line and we played seven or eight passes to get it to Izzy who placed a great shot from the top of the box. In the second half, Lani (Bachmann) had two phenomenal finishes from about 20 out which she put under the crossbar and then from within the 18 and she hit a screamer along the ground. The middle goal saw us work the ball through the midfield to Paula (Fernandez) on the wing who played a great cross to Bailee and she had a great finish.”
Group effort on both ends: “Everyone that stepped on the field put forth some great work. We talked as a team about making up for the goal output that Maddy (Murphy) gave us in previous seasons and talked about how it would need to be a team effort, and getting six goals from five different players tonight was a great thing to see. Rachel Murphy played well in net, and the backline in front of her of Alyssa Chartrand, Jadyn Sperling , Allison Schall and Sophia Zampirri played really well together. Also really cool to see two freshmen in Anna and Lani step on the field and make an immediate impact as well as some players who have been part of the team before like Bailee who are now finding more increased roles.”
Up next: North Penn will host Lansdale Catholic in a non-league game Monday (7pm)
NORTH PENN 3 3 – 6
AVON GROVE 1 0 - 1
Pennsbury 2, Unionville 1
The Falcons went a long way from home, fell behind early then found themselves in the second 40 minutes.
After returning to the District 1 playoff field last year, the Falcons put in a lot of time and effort throughout the summer preparing for the season. Fittingly, it was a couple of seniors in Corinne Russo and Ashlyn McEwing who got their team back on the right foot by producing the tying goal.
It was one of the team’s newcomers in freshman Jill Patrick that provided the winner, converting a corner kick from one of last year’s young sparks in now-sophomore Abbie Ellis.
Scoring Summary
P - Corinne Russo (Ashlyn McEwing)
P - Jill Patrick (Abbie Ellis)
Pennsbury coach Jenna Peters on the win: “Overall, the result was solid. The girls held possession well, and while there were a few things to clean up in the first half, they came out in the second and made the necessary adjustments we talked about at half. They played much more connected in the second half, and that’s what we’ve been asking for. Solid team effort all around.”
Up next: Pennsbury will face Coatesville on Saturday, then travel to Gwynedd Mercy for a non-league game Tuesday.
PENNSBURY 0 2 – 2
UNIONVILLE 1 0 - 1
Quakertown 4, Dock Mennonite Academy 0
The Panthers opened up their season with a quality win, blanking the back-to-back PIAA Class A champions.
Quakertown got a huge effort from a pair of midfielders who had a role in every goal. Senior Faith Greenday scored a goal and put a pair of second half corner kicks on a platter leading to goals while sophomore Shylee Williams netted two and assisted on one.
Scoring Summary
Q - Shylee Williams
Q- Faith Greenday (Shylee Williams)
Q - Shylee Williams (Faith Greenday)
Q - Brielle Bailey (Faith Greenday)
Quakertown coach Jon Gingrich on the win: “The team played solid as a whole, we played our game and we didn’t want to let Dock get into any type of rhythm. It was a great team win.”
The midfield play: “Senior Faith Greenday was exceptional controlling the midfield today. She gave us ball control all day and was also an attacking threat. Sophomore Shylee Williams was beast all game, using her speed to get down the flank all game and pressuring defenders making turnovers all game.”
Defensive effort: “Our backline of senior Anna Greenday, freshman Lacey Garner and sophomores Brielle Bailey and Mya James were super-solid today, they played smart all day and consistently gave us good possession throughout the match.
“Senior Holding Mid Jewel Renshaw played exceptional as well today, she was doing all the work to keep possession but played great defense as well.”
Up next: Quakertown will travel to Upper Perk for a non-league game Tuesday.

Council Rock North 3, West Chester Rustin 2 (OT)
Sarina Igval connected on a goal from inside the 18, propelling the Indians to the win in Friday’s overtime thriller.
The Indians received goals from Keegan Terry – on a first-half penalty kick – and Amber Yuan early in the second half to open up a 2-0 lead before Rustin rallied to knot the score, sending the game to overtime.
Scoring Summary
CRN - Keegan Terry (PK)
CRN - Amber Yuan
CRN – Sarina Igval
Council Rock North coach Gavin Flannigan on the game: “Great to get a win on opening day. We were really happy with a lot of our play, but I think we also recognize there’s a long way to go too.
“Our first goal was from Keegan Terry on a PK after Sarina Igval was fouled. I felt like we settled into the game well after that and had the upper hand in the first half. After half time, we scored early again when Amber Yuan was able to finish from close range off a free kick, but after that WC Rustin scored two great goals from long range to tie it up.
“For the OT, we wanted to settle down again and we were able to do that when we connected a couple of passes and found Sarina who able to finish from inside the 18.”
Props: “Pleased to get the win and move on. We felt we had a lot of good performances today but in particular Keegan Terry and Sarina Igval played very well.”
Up next: Council Rock North will return to action on Saturday.

Upper Moreland 2, Interboro 0
The Golden Bears put together a strong second half powered by a cohesive effort to pick up an opening day win.
With several key players back from a year ago, the Bears have focused on moving the ball, keeping their formational shape and playing within their system. It didn’t show on the scoreboard in the first half, but persistence paid off with two goals in the second half – one each from Madeline Cox and Maggie Brophy.
Thanks to a stout defensive effort, that proved to be more than enough.
Scoring Summary
First half
No score
Second half
UM - Madeline Cox (Eva Gorrell) 58th
UM - Maggie Brophy (Julie Albert) 73rd
Goalie saves: UM - Gracie Costello 1, I - Liv Bulovas 10
UM coach Lisa Benvenuto on the win: “We opened the season with excellent teamwork on both ends of the field. The last few days of training we have really focused on our system, ball movement, and formation--it was nice to see how our girls improved. Our defense stayed organized and disciplined, shutting down scoring opportunities with strong efforts from Aubrey Scarpitti, Jayda Rivera, Kiera Hess, Emma Kramer, and Gracie Costello. In the midfield, Eva Gorrell, Maggie Brophy, Brooklyn Kavanagh, and Julie Albert stood out as they controlled possession and set the tone of play. Keiley Hawk and Leah King also put in quality minutes offensively and defensively in the midfield.”
Capitalizing offensively: “Both goals came from well-executed team efforts, showcasing unselfish passing and sharp communication. The first came from Eva Gorrell finding Madeline Cox on a perfectly placed cross, while the second saw Julie Albert set up a smooth combination play that led to a Maggie Brophy finish. Although she didn’t make the scorebook today, Brogan Neeley had a stellar game, playing a key role in creating offensive chances.”
Up next: Upper Moreland will travel to Harry S Truman for a non-league game Monday.
UPPER MORELAND 0 2 – 2
INTERBORO 0 0 - 0
Methacton 1, Plymouth Whitemarsh 1 (2 OT)
A slow start might have cost the Colonials a chance at a season-opening win, but their resilience made sure it didn’t turn into a season-opening loss either.
The Colonials firmed up after conceding a shock early goal, and the team’s seniors helped regroup during the break. One of those seniors, Mia Baron, came through when needed with the equalizing goal.
Scoring Summary
First half
M - Brooke Cowan 5th
Second half
PW - Mia Baron (Molly McElroy) 53rd
PW coach TJ DeLucia on the match: “We had a really poor start, gifting them a goal four amd a half minutes into the game. With a couple of adjustments, we were able to regroup at halftime. We played really well in the second half. Unfortunately, we were only able to put one in the back of the net to secure a draw.”
Rebounding after the slow start: “We started eight seniors today, so to begin the game that poorly was surprising. But credit to the team for embracing the halftime changes and really finishing the game strong. We're going to have to figure out how to start games better if the seniors are to reach their goals for our team.
Player props: “Freshman JJ Lafferty and sophomore Harper Reilly were terrific today, and a lot was asked of them both offensively and defensively. Freshman Molly McEvoy injected a ton of energy into the team in midfield, creating the second half goal with a shot off the crossbar with the rebound being put in by senior Mia Baron.”
