                Surprise – Surprise!

There were a couple of somewhat surprising games last week as the Suburban One League began its ‘new look’ season.

Surprise # 1 was Central Bucks West’s thrilling 38-35 victory over host Souderton to open the SOL Continental Conference schedule.

“A win like this validates our program,” said Central Bucks West coach Chris Felton. “For us to beat a program like Souderton is really a credit to Souderton – if West can beat them, West must be pretty good. A lot of people took notice”

Last year CB West lost to Souderton 56-7 – ouch!

“The kids knew what happened last year – we all watched the film,” said Felton. “But this is a different football team.

“This might sound crazy to some people, but we have a goal of winning the conference championship,” continued Felton. “This win was very important to us.”

This week the Bucks will travel to meet rival Central Bucks South.

“South is just a year removed from being the best team in the Suburban One League,” said Felton. “They have some weapons, and they know how to use them.

“But we come into the game battle tested,” added Felton. “If we can play with the intensity we had against Souderton, I like our chances.”

Surprise # 2 was Upper Merion’s convincing 36-7 win over previously unbeaten Wissahickon in the SOL American Conference opener for both teams.

Last season the Vikings lone victory of the season was a 22-21 upset win over Wissahickon.

“Last year we caught them a little banged up,” said Upper Merion coach Joe Powel. “But this year, even though they were also missing some key players, I really felt that we outplayed them.”

Powel was confident that his Vikings could compete – and win – against Wissahickon. The margin of victory – 29 points – was somewhat unexpected.

“It was 8-7 at halftime, and I really thought we were in for a tight game,” said Powel. “But we converted on some of their turnovers and came up with a nice win.”

“Now we have to get the players feet back on the ground,” added the coach. “Cheltenham is a talented team, and we’re going to have to play well to win.”

And now the ‘Week That Was’ in the Suburban One League.

National Conference

Council Rock South (3-1, 0-1) wanted to prove that it was among the elite in the Suburban One League when the Golden Hawks hosted perennial power Pennsbury (3-1, 1-0).

Rock South may have lost the game – 27-20 – but may have proven that the Hawks can fly with the best of the birds in defeat.

Pennsbury did not pass a single down as the trio of Richie Applegate (17 carries, 141 yards, 2 touchdowns), Brandon Pepper (15-111-1) and Dante Devine (14-67-1) literally carried the load.

The Golden Hawks had rushing touchdowns from Terence McGovern (20-118-1), B.J. Deola, and Rus Chichkin.

Neshaminy (3-1, 1-0) needed a touchdown pass with just 11 seconds left in the game to defeat Abington (3-1, 0-1) by a 7-0 score.

Redskin quarterback Brian Titus threw a scoring pass to Devon Reedel for the game’s only touchdown.

Abington opened the season with three non-league wins, but the Ghosts could not take advantage of a super defensive effort to record a win in the conference opener.

Quarterback Sam Kind completed eight passes for 112 yards to lead the Abington offensive effort.

                Bensalem (2-2, 1-0) opened its conference schedule with a 20-6 victory over Harry S Truman (0-4, 0-1).

The Owls used a pair of Tiger turnovers to record 14 points. The scoring plays for Bensalem were a 25-yard TD run by Camryn LaSalle – and a pair of scores by Jerry Davis.

Davis scored on a seven-yard run and also crossed the goal line on a 19-yard TD pass from quarterback Ron Vogelei.

Truman trailed by 20-0 at halftime, and the good new for the Tigers was that they outscored the Owls 6-0 in the second half.

Keith Jones and Terry Walker carried the offensive load for Truman.

Council Rock North (1-3, 1-0) won its first game of the season when the Indians downed host William Tennent (0-4, 0-1) by a 35-12 score.

The big playmaker for Rock North was Lee Marvel who scored four touchdowns. Marvel – who scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone – also rushed for three scores.

William Tennent closed the margin to 14-6 but could get no closer.

Panther quarterback Pat Traczykiewicz threw an 18-yard TD pass to Sergio Jamison. The WT signal caller completed 14 passes for 155 yards.

American Conference

Upper Merion (2-2, 1-0) continued its magic over Wissahickon (3-1, 0-1) with a 36-7 conference win.

Viking quarterback Alex Panthavong ran for a score – passed for a score – and intercepted a pass for a score to spark UM.

Pete Panichi led the Viking rushing attack with 150 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Wissahickon, which played without the services of terrific running back Myron Ross (out with injury), led 7-0 early.

Trojan quarterback Brandon Gunn fired a 35-yard TD pass to Anthony Jackson.

Upper Dublin (4-0, 1-0) needed some last-second heroics to edge determined Upper Moreland (3-1, 0-1) by a 19-14 score.

Flying Cardinal quarterback Derek Giannetti connected with Chet Kelly on a 9-yard scoring strike to seal the win. Kelly scored on three TD passes on the night, while Giannetti finished with 12 completions for 260 yards and the three TDs.

Upper Moreland led the game in the fourth period but failed to hold on for the win. The scoring plays for the Golden Bears were a TD pass from quarterback Mike Rosenblum to Dimitri Miller – and a 52-yard TD bolt by Chris Smallwood.

Smallwood, playing in his second game of the season, finished with 26 carries for an impressive 295 yards.

Cheltenham (3-1, 1-0) opened its conference schedule with a 21-13 victory over visiting Norristown (2-2, 0-1).

The Panther rushing attack was once again spectacular and featured the talents of Makhail Reed. Reed helped CHS generate 222 rushing yards and scored all three touchdowns for the Panthers.

Norristown, which had opened the season with a pair of wins, had a highlight film moment as Michael Goode scored on a 69-yard pass from quarterback James Ramsey.

The other Eagle score came on a long distance 52-yard TD dash by Sam Keliojor.

Plymouth-Whitemash (0-4) lost its fourth straight game in a 29-7 non-league loss to Quakertown.

The Colonials began well with a 15-play opening drive, but PW did not come away with any points on the march.

The lone score for Whitemarsh came on special teams. Kevin Bordick blocked a punt – the ball was scooped up by Kenny Williams – and Williams scooted 7-yards for the score.

Continental Conference

Central Bucks West (2-2, 1-0) knocked off Souderton (2-2, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams – 38-35.

The Bucks scored the game-winning touchdown with just 18 seconds left when Ted Conrad bulled in from the two-yard line. Conrad concluded the game with 105 yards on 22 carries.

CB West also received an excellent outing from sophomore Rashaad Williams.  Williams scored on runs of 80 and 81 yards and finished with 255 yards on 18 carries.

Souderton senior running back Justin Powell, back for his first game of the season, also had some eye-popping numbers.

Powell, who helped Souderton take an early 21-7 lead, rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries. Powell scored on runs of 51 and 29 yards.

North Penn (4-0, 1-0) had its revenge on Central Bucks South (2-2, 0-1) as the Knights rolled to a 31-14 conference victory. The Titans had defeated NPHS a season ago.

Ronnie Akins spearheaded the scoring for the Knights with three touchdowns – one on an 11-yard run – and the other two on passes from NP quarterback Justin Davey.

North Penn generated 22 first downs and 335 yards of total offense – with Tyler Smith leading the way with 180 rushing yards.

Central Bucks South once again featured its passing game on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Tom Johns completed 10 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. The scoring passes were to Chris Eberz and Jon Eisenmann, while Mike Doty had five catches for 70 yards.

Central Bucks East (2-2, 1-0) won its second game in a row with a 28-15 conference win over Hatboro-Horsham (1-3, 0-1).

The Hatters led 15-12 behind the running of Mike Borbin. Dave Lorenzo scored on a spectacular 77-yard kickoff return.

However, the Patriots rallied to score the final 16 points and cruised to the win. CB East finished with 300 yards of total offense.

Devon Passman was once again the mainstay for the Pats. Passman raced for 125 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown.

Pennridge (3-1) finished its non-league schedule with a 28-14 loss to North Catholic.

The Rams high-powered offense was limited to just six first downs and 140 yards of total offense.

Pennridge received a pair of touchdowns passes from quarterback Brad Herrmann. Herrmann threw an eight-yard scoring pass to Ian Walbridge and a nine-yard TD strike to Caleb Swartley.

                Quakertown (4-0) completed its non-league schedule with a 29-7 win over Plymouth-Whitemarsh.

The Panthers had a pair of scores come from junior Tony Latronica (26-yard TD pass and 52-yard TD run) and a 16-yard scoring run by Tyler Burke.

Geoff DeLan added a 22-yard field for Quakertown.
