ABINGTON—While Abington's offense was busy scoring 91 points in its previous two games, senior receiver Dom Massey didn't get a whole lot of action.
He more than made up for it against Bensalem on Friday night.
Massey had nine receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown in a 38-13 victory over the Owls on Breast Cancer Awareness night at Schwarzman Stadium.
Abington (7-1, 4-1 SOL National) has scored 166 points in four straight victories.
"This feels great. Our season's taking off," Massey said. "I'm loving it."
Massey caught a 25-yard pass from junior quarterback Sam Kind on the Ghosts' first play from scrimmage and added three more catches before halftime.
Early in the second half, his 35-yard reception on a fake punt set up a touchdown that gave Abington a 28-7 lead and pretty much sealed the win.
Massey's touchdown came on a nine-yard pass from Kind midway through the second quarter.
"The last two games, Dom had maybe one or two catches, but he didn't complain," Ghosts coach Tim Sorber said. "He knows his role. Some weeks he's going to get balls and some weeks he's not. He really came through (tonight). He had a lot of big catches."
The Ghosts rolled up 480 yards of total offense against the Owls (3-5, 2-3) and have scored 28 points or more seven times in eight games.
Kind passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score, and junior receiver Anthony Hensley caught five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
"We have four receivers who can make big plays," Sorber said. "We're a tough team to defend because of that."
"When you have as many factors on offense as we do, you're going to make big plays," Massey said. "We come out with the mentality that we're going to run it down their throats. (After) our defense gets off the field, we drive down the field again. That's how we run."
Ghosts’ sophomore running back Julien Ireland carried 29 times for 159 yards and two scores.
"Ireland is going to be something," Massey said. "Watch out for this kid because he's coming on hard. Teams can't just key on our passing. They have to respect the run."
Senior quarterback Ron Vogelei threw for 82 yards for the Owls, and receiver Tom Vogelei finished with five receptions for 52 yards. Running back Camryn LaSalle added 60 rushing yards on just eight carries.
Bensalem trailed 21-0 late in the second quarter, but gained a ton of momentum when a late punt block set up Ron Vogelei's seven-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left in the first half.
At the start of the second half, Bensalem's defense held Abington on its first possession and forced the Ghosts into what looked like a certain punting situation. But on fourth-and-14 from its own 30-yard line, Abington snapped the ball directly to short-man Kevin Regan, and he hit Massey for the game-changing long gain. A few plays later, Kind hit Hensley for an 11-yard touchdown.
"We work on that play (the fake punt) a lot," Massey said. "They brought nine guys (to block the punt), and we were able to slip somebody out.
Abington visits Pennsbury (7-1, 5-0) in a huge SOL National battle next Friday night. The Ghosts won last year's meeting by one point, 43-42, in overtime after a controversial penalty call on the Falcons.
