With each team edging Harry S Truman by two points, the Neshaminy-Council Rock North match Wednesday figured, on paper at least, to be a potential thriller.
Not even close.
The Indians came into Neshaminy determined not to take another National Conference team lightly. After all, they are now favorites to win the conference after beating archrival South in the first match of the season, and they could ill afford a slipup.
Micah Haynes set the stage at 103 with an 11-1 major decision, and a pair of heavyweight brothers put the exclamation mark on a 51-12 win with a pair of back-to-back pins.
“We weren’t expecting such an easy match,” said 135-pounder Sean Doerr. “We knew we couldn’t take this team lightly. We came close to Truman, and we didn’t want that to happen again.”
In all, Rock racked up five pins, one technical fall and a major decision to go along with four other wins.
Two of the pins came from the Kaschak brothers. When John stepped out on the mat at 215, the match was well in hand. He knew his opponent, though he had never wrestled him before, because he had watched his brother lose to him twice, so there was a little bit of family pride on the line.
He nearly packed freshman Tyler Stabilito in the first period when he caught him in a headlock for a five-point move. But he had to settle for the second period when he caught Stabilito in a Peterson roll and got the fall in 3:05.
John Kaschak is just getting back to 100 percent after pulling a muscle in his back.
“He’s been on the mend for a couple of weeks now,” said coach Tom Vivacqua. “It’s good to see him being aggressive and wrestling tough.”
Not to be outdone by his senior brother, Jayfie wasn’t going to be outdone. In a battle of freshmen, Jayfie won when he countered Chris Wild’s headlock attempt with a bear hug that ended in a pin at 1:37.
“It’s cool to be back-to-back,” said John Kaschak, “and we switch around sometimes.”
One of the most competitive matches of the night came at 140. Rock’s Neil Patel and Brendan Hastings were locked in a scoreless bout into the third period. Patel switched Hastings to take the lead and rode him for much of the rest of the way. Hastings escaped with 12 seconds left but couldn’t penetrate Patel for a winning takedown.
After a slow start to the year, Doerr is picking up momentum. After a good 2-1 showing at the tough Cumberland Duals, he caught Kyle Brooks in a snapback and got the fall at 3:49.
“I was working the bar the whole time,” he said. “He was good fighting it off. The snapback came to me. It was reflexes.”
With the exception of a couple of bouts, Neshaminy coach Dan Winter was disappointed with his team’s effort.
“We came out flat,” he said. “I liked the matchups we had, but it was those close matches we didn’t win. We didn’t wrestle up to our potential.”
The rookie coach did applaud the effort of Nick Russell, Tom Burke and Steve Stemme, the Redskins only winners. Both Russell and Stemme fell just short of major decisions.
At 119, Russell led Allan Stezak 10-2 in the third when he reversed, but Stezak reversed with 50 seconds left and then let Russell up, but the Redskin was unable to get the takedown and had to settle for an 11-4 decision.
Stemme, at 160, took Bruce Froshour down to go ahead 11-3 in the third period. But then he let Froshour go and shot in on a takedown but was unable to complete it as the buzzer sounded.
Just before Stemme’s bout, Tom Burke made short work of Rock’s James Hollawell taking him down and wrapping him up in a cradle in just 29 seconds.
“Burke’s been wrestling great and working hard in the room,” said Winter. “Those three are the hardest workers in the room, and it shows when they go out against a team like Rock.”
The Redskins’ John Lindquist and Colby Lederer also showed well against two of Rock’s better wrestlers. Lindquist (145) lost an 11-5 decision to Greg Lanctot and a feisty Lederer (112) only fell to Shane Longstreth, 4-2.
“We knew that in Neshaminy-Council Rock matches, you never know what’s going to happen,” said John Kaschak. “We knew that we had to come in here and be serious and do our best.”
