It was déjà vu for Council Rock North Tuesday night.
The Indians made the long trek to Crestwood High School in the Poconos to wrestle District Two champion Hazelton in the first round of the PIAA State Dual Meet Championships.
The trip was worth it, as the Indians defeated Hazelton, 40-24, to advance to Friday’s second round at Hershey’s Giant Center. Rock will take on (7-2) Connellsville, a 75-4 winner over (8-1) Brashear, beginning at 10 a.m.
When the starting weight class was drawn for the beginning of the match, it was 119—the same as last Saturday when the Indians took on archrival Council Rock South.
That wasn’t the only similarity.
Rock North fell behind 9-0 before Zac Haynes, who bumped up to 130, got the first win of the night. After a loss at 135, Sean Doerr pinned at 140. After David Giannaula lost a close one at 145, Greg Lanctot bumped to 152 for a major. But the Cougars answered with a tech fall and a major.
Then, just like against South, the Indians stormed back.
Hazleton didn’t weigh anyone in at 189, so coach Tom Vivacqua put in a jayvee to accept the forfeit and bumped Jamie Callender to 215. Rather than face him, the Cougars forfeited and bumped their 215-pounder to heavyweight. But to no avail, as John Kaschak pinned to give Rock North the lead.
Adam Slezak then turned in a decision at 103, and Shane Longstreth finished off the Cougars with a fall at 112, the same result he had against Rock South.
“We won the last five going away,” said Vivacqua. “Now we’re going to Hershey.”
In other District One action, Boyertown (1-2) beat LaSalle 38-21 to advance to Friday’s second round in Hershey against Central Mountain (6-1).
Quakertown (1-1) will wrestle the winner of the Blue Mountain (11-2) vs. Clearfield (9-1) match at the Giant Center in Hershey at 2 p.m. Friday.
