Boys' PIAA State Wrap: Class AAA

 

The first day of competition at the PIAA Class AAA state swimming and diving championships found the SOL boys' team shut out of medals.
 
Unfortunately, the Upper Dublin medley relay of Dan Fitzgerald, Chris Willcox, Dave Derr and Calvin Starosta made it to the medal heat but was disqualified.
 
North Penn fared a little better. The Knights finished 15th in the medley relay in 1:38.17. Peter Kolokithias, Nick Ortlieb, Stephan Hoch and Craig Hennessey were the relay members.
 
The two teams met again in the consolation final of the 200 freestyle relay.
 
Upper Dublin’s Fitzgerald, Brit Gergen, Sam Fearnside and Starosta finished 12th in 1:26.80 while North Penn’s Hennessey, Jason Deana, Ortilieb and Jack Else took 14th in 1:27.84.
 
In the 200 freestyle, Souderton's Jake Radcliff finished 19th in 1:42.41 Sean Cook of CB West was 23rd in 1:44.54 and Abington’s Sean Staerk took 25th in 1:45.03.
 
The 200 indvidual medley had three representatives from the SOL.
 
Colson Ferrari of CB East was 22nd in 1:59.14, Chris Willcox of Upper Dublin was 30th in 2:01.25 and James Sturner of Council Rock North took 31st place in 2:01.77.
 
Stephan Hoch of North Penn was the lone SOL qualifier in the 50 freestyle, finishing 25th in 21.75.
 
Hoch went back-to-back in individual events, swimming the 100 butterfly. He was 24th in  52.91.
 
Kevin Magee of CB East was 25 th in the 100 butterfly in 52.94, with teammate Mark Dilemmo right behind him in a tie for 26 th place with Drew Wissler of Conestoga Valley. Both had a time of 52.95.
 
Willcox also swam twice on Friday, coming back to take 30th in the 100 butterfly in 53.70.
 
In the 200 freestyle relay, CB East took 17th with the team of Riley Weber, Magee, Chris D’Arrigo and Ferrari in 1:28.19, and Wissahickon’s Andrew Nagelberg, Chris Chiodo Ortiz, Erik Waechter and Adam Bossert finished 19th in 1:28.63.
 
North Penn and Upper Dublin are tied for 40th place with 10 points each in the team standings. North Allegheny is winning the team meet with 140 points.
 
North Penn coach Brian Daly is happy with what he has seen so far.
 
“We’re dropping times and that’s the name of the game,” he said. “The goal here is to swim twice; swim in the morning and try to come back and swim at night and hopefully we’ll keep doing that.
 
“The guys seem to be enjoying it and we’re looking forward to the rest of the meet.”
