BASEBALL
Senior Jamie Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) became the fourth Owl in program history to reach the 200-hit plateau with his eighth inning single in Temple’s 10-8 loss to Rider on Wednesday. One day earlier, Abercrombie had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in Temple’s 10-8 loss to LaSalle. Chris Umstead (Pennridge) was 1-for-3 for with an RBI for the Explorers. Zach Huff (Pennridge) worked three innings on the mound for the Explorers, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out three.
Senior Mark Angelo (Quakertown) was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double in East Stroudsburg’s 9-6 loss to Millersville in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday. The double was the 18th of the season for Angelo and tied the former Quakertown standout with Kevin Thompson for the team lead (and school record). Millersville won the first game 5-0.
On Wednesday, Angelo went 7-for-9 in East Stroudsburg’s doubleheader sweep of Lock Haven (16-1, 15-2). He was 3-for-4 in game one and 4-for-5 in game two. For the day, he had two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored.
Tony Donofry (Council Rock South) delivered an RBI single in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win over Kutztown in game one of a twinbill on Friday afternoon. James Quigley (Bensalem) had one of four hits for Kutztown. KU won the second game 7-5. Quigley contributed a single in the win.
On Wednesday, Donofry went 3-for-5 with six RBIs, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Bloomsburg to a 9-8 win over Mansfield in game two of a doubleheader. Chris Haagen (Central Bucks West) led off the inning with a single, and Anthony Forman (Council Rock South) delivered a sacrifice fly, setting stage for Donofry’s game winner. Donofry also had a two-out grand slam in the second inning. The Huskies fell 8-4 in the opener.
Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) was 3-for-3 while Mike Knipe (Pennridge) was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in Chestnut Hill’s 7-2 win over the University of Sciences on Thursday.
MEN’S GOLF
Widener sophomore John Ksionska (Pennsbury) was sixth with a score of 88 in the Tom Ruggieri Invitational I at The Springhaven Club on Tuesday. Widener finished second out of three teams.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Leanna Pica (Neshaminy) scored four goals and had two assists, but Kutztown’s late rally came up short in a 19-16 loss to Gannon University on Thursday. Danielle Shore (Souderton) and Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) each had one goal. Pica also was credited with two ground balls and a turnover caused while Shore and Rosenkaimer each had one ground ball.
On Wednesday, Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals and Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) added a goal and an assist in Shippensburg’s 11-7 win over Kutztown. Kuntzmann also was credited with three ground balls and five turnovers caused. Schnurr had one ground ball and one turnover caused. For Kutztown, Rosenkaimer and Pica each scored a goal and had three ground balls. Rosenkaimer also had a turnover caused.
Senior Stephanie Jordan (Souderton) turned away 24 shots in Chestnut Hill’s 18-9 win over Dominican on Wednesday. She made 15 saves on 29 shots in the second half to deny any chance of a comeback. Kelly McKay (Pennridge) had one turnover caused.
Breanne Scullin (Council Rock South) was credited with three ground balls and a turnover caused in The College of New Jersey’s 18-5 win over Eastern College on Tuesday. TCNJ (10-0) took over the top spot in the latest IWLCA Division III rankings.
Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored four goals, including the game winner in the final minute, as East Stroudsburg posted a 15-11 come-from-behind win over Millersville on Tuesday. Michelle’s twin sister, Morgan Mangiaruga (North Penn), contributed a goal and an assist for Millersville. Sara Foley (Neshaminy) scored the tying goal for ESU with 21:03 left and later added an insurance goal. Millersville goalie Colleen Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) went down with an injury before the game and did not play.
Gabrielle Stitz (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in West Chester’s 12-7 win over Bloomsburg on Tuesday. For Bloomsburg, Sam Alexander (Upper Moreland) contributed a goal while Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) added an assist. West Chester improved to 9-9 overall, 7-0 in conference play, while Bloomsburg fell to 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the conference.
SOFTBALL
West Chester and East Stroudsburg split a twinbill on Friday. In game one, freshman Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a single and scored a run in East Stroudsburg’s 5-4 win. For West Chester, Meghan Halberstadt (North Penn) had a pair of hits, including a double, and one RBI while Evelyn Anderson (Hatboro-Horsham) had a single and an RBI. In the nightcap, Halberstadt contributed a double and two RBIs while Anderson had a single and an RBI in West Chester’s 8-5 win. Gieringer had a pair of hits and two RBIs for ESU.
On Wednesday, Gieringer had an RBI single in East Stroudsburg’s 4-1 loss to Lock Haven in the second game of a twinbill. East Stroudsburg lost the first game 8-0.
Sara Golden (Souderton) contributed a single in Kutztown’s 3-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Shippensburg on Thursday. Golden led off the fifth with a single, and Steph Denlinger (Souderton) drew an intentional two-out walk, setting the stage for an Ashley Fitzgerald home run. The walk moved Denlinger into sole possession of second place on the NCAA Division II career walks list. She now has 142 and needs three more to tie the all-time mark. Kutztown dropped the first game 2-1.
On Wednesday, Denlinger hit her 18th homer of the season as Kutztown earned a doubleheader sweep of Millersville. For the day, Denlinger was 4-for-6 with four RBIs, four runs scored and a home run. Kutztown won game one 8-0. Kaitlin Arbogast (Wissahickon) struck out 11 and allowed six hits and two walks in earning her 17th win of the season. Denlinger, who homered in the fifth, finished 2-for-2 with two runs scores and two RBIs. The homer was the 74th of a record-shattering career for the former Souderton star. Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) singled and scored a run. KU won the second game 10-1. Hannum contributed a home run while Denlinger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
MEN’S TENNIS
Sophomore Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and teammate Adrian Avena notched an 8-5 win in second doubles in Chestnut Hill’s 6-3 loss the University of the Sciences on Wednesday. Carson fell at fourth singles to Paul Caceres 6-4, 6-0.
Dan Lee (Abington) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles in The College of New Jersey’s 8-1 win over Drew Rangers on Tuesday. Lee teamed with Bill Carrig to notch an 8-2 win at third singles. TCNJ improved to 8-2 on the season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Freshman Candice Kashani (Pennsbury) and Kelly Eurich won 8-3 at second doubles in Gettysburg’s 8-1 win over Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Kashani won her second straight match playing at second flight singles (6-1, 6-4). Liz Heisler (Wissahickon) improved to 4-1 on the year with a 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Week for the period ending April 5. Hasyn was victorious in all five of her matches last week as Bloomsburg picked up three more wins on the season. She won all three singles matches while playing at No. 1, including a 6-2, 6-3 decision against West Chester and a 6-4, 6-2 win versus Adelphi. She also picked up a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles as the Huskies improved to 9-3 on the season.
On Thursday, Hasyn and Kristen Bonito won 8-3 at number two doubles in Bloomsburg’s 5-4 win over Kutztown. Hasyn fell to Rohini Das at first singles, 6-1, 6-4. On Wednesday, Hasyn notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles in Bloomsburg’s 9-0 win over Millersville. Hasyn is ranked 13th among the top singles players in the Atlantic Region. Bloomsburg is ranked fourth in latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region poll.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Philadelphia Biblical University sophomore Justin Brubaker (Souderton) was named the Western Division Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after finishing tops in the nation in kills per set (5.84) and 12th in the country in digs per outing (2.96). Brubaker, who earlier this season recorded his 1,000th career kill, also picked up first team all-conference honors for the second straight year and was recently name one of 16 players to the NECVA All-Tournament team. The Crimson Eagles fell in the quarterfinals of the NECVA Tournament to eventual finalist Nazareth College. The loss wrapped up a successful campaign that saw the volleyball team achieve the highest national ranking in program history, at one point moving as high as seventh nationally.
