BASEBALL
Chestnut Hill freshman outfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) earned second team all-conference honors in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. He finished among the CACC’s top 20 in batting with a .306 average (38-for-124). On April 13, Latchum was selected as the CACC Rookie of the Week. For the season, he contributed 16 RBIs and stole 15 bases in 16 attempts while also providing outstanding defensive play in the corner outfield positions (.984 fielding percentage). He finished second on the team in on-base percentage (.395) and started all 40 games he participated in.
Senior Jamie Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) had three hits, but it wasn’t enough as Temple committed five errors and stranded 12 runners in an 8-3 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore last Wednesday. Abercrombie now has 224 hits and needs 10 more to tie the school record set by Bob Filler in 2001.
James Quigley (Bensalem) had an RBI single in Kutztown’s 8-5 win over Slippery Rock in a PSAC Tournament quarterfinal game last Wednesday. Kutztown fell to Mercyhurst 9-2 in the PSAC semifinals on Thursday. Quigley contributed a single.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Jenny Collins (North Penn) connected for the hat trick in second-ranked University of Maryland’s 20-4 rout of Colgate in an opening round game of the 2009 NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Terps will take on seventh-seeded Syracuse in a second round game on Saturday.
Becca Edwards (Springfield) contributed two goals and two assists in the University of Pennsylvania’s 10-8 win over Fairfield in Sunday’s opening round game of the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers, the tournament’s fourth ranked team, will take on Duke in a second round game on May 16.
SOFTBALL
Kutztown senior Steph Denlinger (Souderton) was named the Player of the Year in the PSAC Eastern Division. Denlinger, who was the 2006 PSAC Rookie of the Year and the 2007 PSAC East Player of the Year, broke the NCAA Division II all-time record for home runs in a career with 77 and walks with 157. She hit 21 home runs this season en route to earning her fourth consecutive All-PSAC East first team selection. She leads the Golden Bears and PSAC East in batting average (.430), hits (65), home runs (21), RBIs (59) and walks (34).
Junior Kaitlin Arbogast (Wissahickon) was named the Pitcher of the Year in the PSAC Eastern Division. Already KU’s all-time strikeout, wins, shutouts and innings pitched leader as a junior, she earned her third straight All-PSAC East first team nod. This is the second time she has been named the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year as she won the award in 2007 when she also was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Year. She boasts a 1.55 ERA and a 19-5 record with six shutouts and 17 complete games. She has struck out 195 batters in 175 2/3 innings and has held opponents to a .194 batting average.
On Saturday, Denlinger’s grand slam in a five-run second inning propelled Kutztown to a 9-0 win in five innings over West Virginia Wesleyan. The win clinched a berth in the NCAA Division II Region 2 final. Arbogast pitched a complete game shutout, limiting the Bobcats to three hits and one walk.
Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the Freshman of the Year on the All-PSAC East squad. She is only the second East Stroudsburg player to receive that honor, joining three-time All-PSAC shortstop Jen Veronesi who was honored in 2004. Gieringer made 36 starts at third base, including 14 conference games in which she hit .326 with nine RBIs and committed just three errors. Her team-leading 24 RBIs featured eight games with at least two runs batted in, and she was third on the team in on-base percentage (.367) and fourth in batting average (.303) and slugging percentage (.440).
Senior Ashley Carlson (Pennsbury) was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Team. Carlson, a member of the second team, has recorded a 3.89 GPA, including a perfect 4.0 during the 2008 fall semester, while majoring in elementary education. A frequent member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and Dean’s List, she is active in the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and serves as treasurer of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. She volunteers as Bucknell Buddies tutor, she is a cheerleading coach at her high school alma mater and she works with a local elementary school tutoring in English as a Second Language. On the field, Carlson ranks second in program history in games played, having seen time in 194 career contests. She is also eighth in career hits (147), fourth in runs scored (97) and third in stolen bases (47). She has led the Bison in stolen bases each of her four seasons with the squad, topping the Patriot League in that category in 2007. A co-captain this year, Carlson is batting .264 with 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts. Carlson traveled to Australia last summer where she competed against teams from the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Her team captured the gold medal.
MEN’S TENNIS
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) won his match at second singles (6-3, 6-3) in Bloomsburg’s 5-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the championship of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. The Huskies will advance to the NCAA championship round next week in Orlando, Fla. Wexler was also part of a second doubles team that earned an 8-2 win. In Friday’s 5-1 semifinal win over West Liberty, Wexler and teammate Mark Schroder posted an 8-3 win at number two doubles. Wexler also won his singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Dan Lee (Abington) notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles in The College of New Jersey’s 5-0 win over St. Joseph’s College in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Championship Tournament on Friday. TCNJ fell to Johns Hopkins 5-0 in a second round match on Saturday. Lee lost his match at sixth singles 2-6, 0-3.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) defeated Imani James 6-1, 6-3 at first singles in Bloomsburg’s 5-0 win over Virginia State University on Thursday to advance to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region finals. Hasyn teamed with Kristen Bonito to earn an 8-1 win at second doubles. Bloomsburg advanced to the NCAA Division II national championship tournament in Orlando, Fla., next week with a 5-3 win over Slippery Rock in the Atlantic Region final on Friday. Hasyn fell at first singles (6-1, 3-6, 4-6).
Freshman Candice Kashani (Pennsbury) recently completed her first season as a member of Gettysburg’s tennis team. She emerged as one of the Bullets’ top contributors in her debut season, posting 7-6 records in both singles and doubles competition. She went 5-2 at the third flight in the singles lineup and won four straight matches at one point in the spring. Kashani won each of her first three collegiate doubles matches at No. 2, picking up her first collegiate win against NCAA Division II Shepherd University. Gettysburg finished the year 7-9 overall, 3-7 in the Centennial Conference.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Jason Rebuck (William Tennent) finished third in the hammer throw in the PSAC Championships this weekend with a throw of 179’5”.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Anna Aagenes (Central Bucks West) was runner-up in the 800 meters at the 2009 Heptagonal Championships. She finished second to Yale’s Kate Grace, the indoor national champion, by 17-hundreths of a second. Aagenes’ time of 2:09:18 was regional-qualifying worthy, but it was about a second behind her season best.
Senior Katherine Doyle (Central Bucks West) anchored both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams for East Stroudsburg at the 2009 PSAC Championships. Doyle clocked a season-best 3:53.93 in the 4x400. Both teams finished fourth. Doyle also finished sixth in the 100 meters (12.51) and seventh in the 200 meters (25.63). Kristen Morby (Central Bucks West) finished in a tie for 11th in the pole vault (9’2 1/4”). Morby holds ESU’s record in the pole vault at 10’ 6 ¼”.
Sarah Messner (Upper Dublin) was part of Kutztown University’s 4x100 relay that finished fifth at this weekend’s PSAC championships with a time of 48.95. Jess Schlecter (Centeral Bucks South) was part of Kutztown’s 4x400 relay that finished seventh with a time of 3:57.56.
