PHILADELPHIA – ‘Relieved.’
That’s how North Penn’s Mike Bradstreet described his emotions after his SOL American-Continental squad notched a dramatic 13-12 win over Tri-Cape in a quarterfinal game of the Carpenter Cup at the University of Penn’s Meiklejohn Stadium on Friday.
“I was more relieved we won than anything,” Bradstreet said. “I would have just felt awful if we had lost. I was relieved.”
Bradstreet took the mound in the ninth with the SOL/BAL holding a 12-9 lead when Tri-Cape staged a two-out rally, scoring three runs – only one earned.
“I’m not a strikeout pitcher,” Bradstreet said. “They were just finding the holes.”
“No balls were hit hard,” said Hatboro-Horsham coach Pete Moore, the head coach of the SOL. “They had a couple of little hits that just got through the infield, and we had an error that gave them a pair of unearned runs.
“Mike Bradstreet was tremendous. Even though he gave up those runs, he did a great job.”
The win propelled the SOL American-Continental into Tuesday’s semifinals at Citizens Bank Park.
“It’s exciting except I have University of Rhode Island orientation that day, so I can’t go,” Bradstreet said.
The North Penn senior should be forgiven if he feels as though he could use a brief vacation.
The dust had not settled on the Knights’ win over Parkland in last Friday’s PIAA Class AAAA title game when Bradstreet found himself back on the mound for the SOL American-Continental squad in the Carpenter Cup.
He worked a scoreless inning on Monday. He was back on the mound again on Friday and is still scheduled to pitch for his Nor-Gwyn American Legion team.
“It didn’t feel like there was any break,” Bradstreet said. “It would have been nice to have a couple of days with nothing to do.”
That probably won’t happen any time soon, but Bradstreet can take some satisfaction from the knowledge that he helped propel his squad to a spot in the semis at Citizens Bank Park.
“It’s great,” Moore said. “This is the third year in a row that our team will be going to Citizens Bank Park.
“Every year it’s new kids, and it’s a great experience for them. Every year we start out with a goal of getting to Citizens Bank, and this year our goal has become to be the first Suburban One American-Continental team to win the tournament.”
The SOL plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th, and once again, the win had a decidedly Methacton flavor.
The Warriors’ Nick Sun opened the inning with a single to left, and he moved up to second on a wild pitch. Methacton teammate Todd Rubendall followed and drew a walk. Sun was erased at third on a fielder’s choice. Rubendall crossed the plate with the go-ahead run when Methacton’s Mark Romano singled up the middle.
Bradstreet did the rest, slamming the door on any Tri-Cape comeback attempt with a scoreless bottom of the 11th.
Earlier, it looked as though the SOL had won it when they broke a 9-9 tie with a three-run outburst in the top of the ninth. Quakertown’s Jayson Rathjens got things started with a single to left center.
Pennridge’s Dylan Tice delivered an RBI double to left center, and then Sun collected an RBI single. An error allowed a third run to cross the plate, putting the SOL on top 12-9.
Tri-Cape had an answer in the bottom of the inning, but Bradstreet held them off the rest of the way as the SOL rallied for the big win.
EXTRA INNINGS: A four-run first that featured four hits – a triple by North Penn’s Justin Davey as well as singles by North Penn’s Matt Albaugh (RBI), Central Bucks South’s Joe Mullin (RBI) and Upper Dublin’s Rob Swartz – suggested that the SOL might be on its way to an easy win. That wasn’t the case, and it was a 6-6 game after two innings…Leading the SOL offensively were Romano (2-for-2, 2 RBIs), Pennridge’s Ray Puskar (2-for-4), Mullin (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), Souderton’s Shawn Leo (2-for-3), Tice (2-for-3, RBI) and Sun (2-for-4, RBI)…On a day when the hitters seemed to have the edge, Methacton’s Jordan Carter allowed one hit and one run in three strong innings. He fanned six....Tri-Cape catcher Juan Valazquez had himself quite a day, slamming a pair of home runs and throwing out four base runners attempting to steal.
