NOR-GWYN 2, BOYERTOWN 2 (6 innings)
Nor-Gwyn and Boyertown were declared co-champs of the Region Two Tournament when Thursday’s final was halted with two outs in the top of the sixth innings because of torrential rain. Nor-Gwyn – thanks to a two-out RBI double by Craig Lepre – had just taken a 3-2 lead, but since the inning was not completed, the score reverted back to the end of the sixth inning when the two teams were deadlocked 2-2.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first. Brandon Sullivan reached first on an error to open the frame, and Ryan Schwager followed with an infield single. Both runners advanced on Ryan Zakszeski’s sacrifice bunt.
Ethan Moser walked to load the bases, and Sullivan came home when Travis Kreitz lofted a sacrifice fly to left. Josh Schnell’s single to left plated Schwager.
That would be the extent of Boyertown’s offensive production as Nor-Gwyn ace Mike Bradstreet – who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the Hawks’ opening round game – was in complete command. He did not allow a hit the rest of the way.
Nor-Gwyn got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Steve Dale was safe on an error to open the inning, and Pat Carbone capitalized on the opportunity, hitting a home run over the left field fence to knot the score 2-2.
That turned out to be the final as the two teams were forced to share the 2009 Region 2 title. Both will advance to next week’s state tournament at Boyertown.
