BASEBALL
Mark Angelo (Quakertown), a former East Stroudsburg University All-American, was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the second pick in the 44th round of the Major League Baseball draft on June 11. He was the second player to be drafted in ESU history and hit .421 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs in his only season with the Warriors. He was named to three All-Region teams and the ABCA All-America third team. After 31 games playing for Seattle’s affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League, Angelo was hitting .280.
Randy Mower (North Penn) capped his junior season at St. Joseph’s University with his selection to the 2009 Philadelphia Big 5 Team. He finished the season 5-5 with a 4.80 earn run average, tops among starting staff. He led the team in wins and innings pitched and moved into the top five all-time in both categories.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Jessica Romano (Hatboro-Horsham) and teammate Nina Brascetta were named captains of the Philadelphia University women’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season. Both are prominent members of the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate conference (CACC) championship Lady Ram squad. Romano, a center, was a NCAA Division II All-American candidate in 2009 and led her team with 18.6 points and 11 rebounds a game last season. She earned CACC All-Tournament MVP and was named to the Daktrontics East All-Region first team, WBCA Division II ‘National Player of the Month’ honorable mention, Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Region and ECAC All-Star second team, among other honors.
FOOTBALL
Bloomsburg is ranked 13th in the American Football Coaches association (AFCA) Preseason Division II Coaches’ Poll. SOL alums on the roster are sophomore Andrew Flogel (Neshaminy), sophomore Dylan Manni (Bensalem) and redshirt freshman Shaun Moore (North Penn). The Huskies, who were 12-2 last year, open their 2009 season at home on Aug. 27 against 15th-ranked Ashland University.
MEN’S SOCCER
Junior Brian James (Pennridge) was a first team all-league forward for Widener last season. He ended the season tied for eighth in the league with four assists and was one of three players on the team to play all 21 games. Widener, which is coming off a berth in the Commonwealth Conference final, has been selected to finish fifth in the league based on a vote of the league’s coaches.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) is expected to start at forward for an East Stroudsburg team that won its first ever NCAA Division II playoff game in program history last year. Also projected to earn a starting nod is sophomore midfielder Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South), who was on the field for all 22 games as a starting back last year. The Warriors, who have made consecutive PSAC semifinal appearances, also boast several other SOL alums on their roster – freshman Michelle Battista (Neshaminy), senior Caitlyn Curran (Council Rock South) and Kelsey Daley (Hatboro-Horsham).
Junior goalie Megan Purcell (Pennridge) is one of the top returnees on Widener University’s field hockey team this fall. Purcell earned second team all-conference honors last year. A two-year starter, she finished second in the league with 163 saves, fifth with a 3.22 goals-against average and fifth with a .744 save percentage. Widener is picked to finish fourth in the tough Commonwealth Conference this season.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Senior Kristen Morby (Central Bucks West) was named to the second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Track and Cross Country team. She was the only ESU student-athlete to graduate with a 4.0 cumulative GPA in 2009 while earning her degree in physical therapy. Morby set the school record of 10’ 6 ¼” in the pole vault last spring and also held the indoor record during her career. She was one of four Warrior student-athletes to be named to the Academic All-District team in her sport in each of the last two years.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Junior Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) will be one of several veteran players expected to lead the East Stroudsburg volleyball team, which is looking to return to the PSAC playoffs for the second straight year. Stark was second team All-PSAC East at outside hitter last year after leading ESU with 307 kills (2.6 per game) and 33 aces. She had 17 matches with at least 10 kills as a sophomore and has posted team-highs in kills per game in her first two years. Stark has 532 kills, 110 blocks and 49 aces at the midpoint of her career.
