DOYLESTOWN - Central Bucks South dared host Central Bucks West – even doubled dared the Bucks defensively - in a 17-7 Titan victory at War Memorial Field.

“South dared us to throw the football the entire game,” said Central Bucks West coach Brian Hensel. “They had eight in the box, and our options were to throw the football or run into a wall of players.”

And when West put the ball into the air it was intercepted three times by senior Titan safety Matt Welk. All of Welk’s picks came in the second half, and the Titans converted two of those turnovers into 14-second half points.

“We were really well prepared for this game,” said Welk. “We knew their pass plays, and it was just a case of getting to the ball. We played some man and some zone – we wanted to mix it up.”

“Matt set a career school interception record for one game,” smiled CB South coach Bart Szarko. “Now we haven’t been around too long as a school, but Matt had a nice game. Our entire defense played well.”

West could not move the football on the ground as it was limited to just 30 yards rushing on only 15 attempts. Buck junior quarterback Ward Udinski did complete 13 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

South could move the football, but the Titans did not finish drives in the first half. In fact, a 37-yard field goal by Josh Williams as time ran out in the first half were the only points that CB South could score in the contest’s initial 24 minutes.

“It was very frustrating to be able to control the game and not score touchdowns,” said Szarko. “We haven’t been real consistent around the goal line, and we have to get better there.”

The initial Titan drive plowed to the West two-yard line – second and goal. But three plays netted a minus seven yards and kept the game scoreless.

A second period drive gave South a first and goal on the West two-yard line. Bobby DiPasquale set up the drive with a 43-yard dash to the two, but three plays and a minus 20 yards later, Williams was short on a field goal attempt.

“We had two great goal line stands by our defense,” said Hensel. “But we have to be able to move the ball on offense to help our defense out. And we weren’t able to do that. I have to be more creative on offense if we are going to move the football.”

Welk’s second interception set up the first South touchdown drive in the third period. The highlight of the drive was a 17-yard run by sophomore Dan Brown. Senior Jon Eisemann capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown burst on a third down call.

“Some of the seniors are going to have to show some of the younger guys how to win football games on the high school level,” said Eisemann. “We got some bragging rights tonight by beating West, but we want to be able to use this game to get ready for the rest of our schedule.”

“Our first four games were against some pretty good teams,” said Welk. “We are going to try and win as many games as we can and see what happens.”

Welk’s third INT set up the final South score in the fourth period. Sophomore Matt Johns – who passed for 130 yards on nine completions – fired a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brown.

West did piece together a scoring drive in the final moments to avert the shutout. Udinski completed six passes for 56 yards with the scoring pass coming on a four-yard connection with Rick Reynolds.

Udinski and sophomore Jake Poeske hooked up nine times for 95 yards.

“Jake was running scout team not too long ago,” said Hensel. “But he has really impressed us, and we moved him into the starting lineup. We are going to use him out of the backfield and throw him the ball as well.”

West (1-4, 0-2) had the unenviable task of playing unbeaten North Penn (5-0, 2-0) next week, while South (1-4, 1-1) will host Quakertown (4-1, 1-1) in a must-win game.

“I hope that we learned how to win tonight,” said Szarko. “We have to believe in ourselves.”
