NEWTOWN – The Neshaminy football team assessed itself only a C+ for its accomplishments over the first half of the 2009 season.
“The players were not happy with the way we performed during the first half of the season,” said Neshaminy head coach Mark Schmidt. “We made a plan on what we had to do to improve, and we saw some of that tonight against a good football team.”
The Redskins (6-1, 3-1) made the Dean’s List – as in Bryan Dean - for their superlative performance in a 42-17 Suburban One National Conference over host Council Rock South (5-2, 2-2).
Dean, the diminutive Neshaminy senior tailback, rushed for a game-high 180 yards on 31 carries. He also rushed for three touchdowns and scored on a TD pass from Charlie Marterella.
“Once we lost to Abington (28-24) we realized that we are going to have to beat the rest of the teams in our league,” said Dean. “Tonight was a big hurdle, and we hope we can get a chance to win out and play (unbeaten) Pennsbury at the end of the season.
“We got down early in this game, and we knew that we would have to push ourselves to the limit,” added Dean. “We just couldn’t let up.”
Council Rock South was more than competitive in the first period. The Golden Hawks – who were coming off a stunning 41-38 overtime victory over Abington last week – actually led this game twice in the early going.
Rock South running back Greg Welch jetted 64 yards into the end zone on the initial Hawk offensive series. Rich Bruno added the first of his two placements to give CR South a 7-0 lead.
Neshaminy had a fine kickoff return by Ricky Williams of 55 yards to start the ensuing series in Hawk territory. Nine plays later, fullback Corey Majors bulled in from the 13-yard line, and Rick Domico added the first of his six point after touchdowns to knot the score at 7-7.
Just two plays later, the Golden Hawks regained the lead when Welch – who rushed for a team-high 170 yards on just 10 carries – dialed long distance again for the Skin end zone. Welch scored his second touchdown on a sparkling 66-yard scoring play.
Again, the Neshaminy kickoff return team played a huge element in the swing of momentum back to the Skins.
Williams cradled the ball at the one-yard line and darted along the Neshaminy sideline for a sensational 99-yard return for a touchdown.
“We seemed to settle down after Ricky’s touchdown,” said Schmidt. “We work hard on special teams, and we made an adjustment on that return.”
“We pride ourselves in our special teams, and I was disappointed by our performance” said Council Rock South coach Vince Bedesem. “Those kickoff returns really put our defense in a bind.
“Neshaminy did what it needed to do in order to power the football,” added Bedesem. “They won the battle along the line of scrimmage – on both sides of the ball.”
The Skins took the game over in the second quarter. Dean – who ripped off a 40-yard run – capped the first scoring drive with a 17-yard TD scamper.
Neshaminy added another score on its next possession. This time Dean found the end zone on a 45-yard scoring pass from Charlie Marterella.
The Redskins scored its final TD of the period after recovering a Rock South fumble. A double pass from Brian Titus - to Rick Brebner – to Dean resulted in a 34-yard pass completion. Dean scored moments later on a 7-yard run.
Council Rock South would score its final points of the half – and the game – on the last play of the half. Quarterback Billy Fleming scrambled 30 yards to set up a 29-yard field goal by Bruno which made the score at intermission 35-17.
Dean scored the only points of the second half on a 1-yard leap into the end zone.
“The last drive we ran 42-Iso almost every play,” smiled Dean. “We were going to run it until we got into the end zone.”
“The game comes down to blocking and tackling,” said Bedesem. “And Neshaminy did a better job of doing that than we did.”
“We wanted to run the ball, and Bryan had a nice game,” said Schmidt. “What did he score? Four touchdowns?”
An A+ individual performance for an A+ team outing.
