A pair of SOL teams advanced to Thursday’s District One Class AAA semifinals.
Hatboro easily defeated Unionville 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-19) while sixth-seeded Council Rock North earned a 3-1 win over third-seeded Penncrest in a tightly contested match (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23).
The Indians received monster performances at the net from Rachel Friedman (13 kills), Sarah Kiely (13 kills) and Bailey Dowd (12 kills). Friedman also had 19 digs while Kiely had 14 digs and five blocks and Dowd had seven digs and four blocks.
Senior setter Jackie Davies had 45 assists as well as 10 digs and three kills. Caroline Anderson had five kills, 10 digs and five blocks. Dani Borgia had 19 digs while Amanda Carmen led the defense with 21 digs.
The Indians will face an upstart St. Basil squad that – despite its 10th seed – pulled off the upset of the tournament with its 3-1 win over defending district champion Upper Merion.
Pennsbury saw its season come to an end at the hands of Bishop Shanahan. The district’s top-seeded squad defeated the Falcons 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-12).
“We came out slow and nervous in game one and let it slip away,” coach Tim Paulson said.
The Falcons had a chance to get back in the match after winning the third game, but Shanahan closed it out with a convincing win in game four.
“We failed to make any runs in game four,” Paulson said. “We struggled serving and passing.”
Paulson lauded the efforts of seniors Drew Jolly (13 kills, seven digs) and Syd Aizen (11 kills, five aces, 16 digs). Paige Hensor added eight digs.
Council Rock North will face St. Basil Academy at Wissahickon on Thursday at 6 p.m. while Hatboro will take on Bishop Shanahan at Norristown in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
