BUCKINGHAM – A suffocating Wissahickon team defense overcame a magnificent 27-point performance by Central Bucks East senior David Kiersnowski as the unbeaten Trojans (3-0) edged the host Patriots (0-1), 57-53.

“The turnovers in the second half caused some big swings in the game,” said Central Bucks East head coach Chris Huber. “But that is part of what you expect when you play Wissahickon – an up tempo game that you have to execute against.”

Wissahickon – behind the swarming defense of guards Michael Bundy, Gio Atkins, and Jordan Reed – caused 21 damaging Patriot turnovers – nine in that critical third period. The Trojans trailed at the half 33-30 and led after three quarters, 46-42.

“We knew that East is always a team that can shoot the basketball,” said Wissahickon head coach Kyle Wilson. “So we wanted to pressure the ball and limit their scoring opportunities.”

Wissahickon may have had the best team on the floor, but East had the best player in Kiersnowski -the explosive guard.

“As a coach, he drove me crazy,” said Wilson as Kiersnowki put on a dazzling offensive show with a variety of spectacular drives to the basket. “I wished I could just sit in the stands as a spectator and watch him play. He was that good.”

“David is something special,” said Huber. “He is so mentally tough, and he can create a lot of good things with the basketball.”

“I surprised myself a little, I guess,” said Kiersnowski – who at 5-foot, 11 inches incredibly blocked a shot that was above the rim. “I timed it perfectly.

“I think we showed tonight that we can play with the great teams around – and Wissahickon is a great team,” added Kiersnowski.

One of the Trojan defenders that had his hands full with Kiersnowski was sophomore Jordan Reed. Reed – who scored eight points – got the play the Patriot guard up close and personal.

“It seemed like he hit every shot – and we were contesting each shot,” said Reed as Kiersnowski hit 11 of 18 from the field that included a pair of 3-pointers - and was 3-3 from the line. “We had to lock him down if we were going to beat them, we had to stay disciplined and contain him as much as possible.”

If Kiersnowski was a one-man show for CB East – the Wissahickon team was a five-man show with its players on the floor.

“We want to have a team that is balanced,” said Wilson. “We feel that we can score from both the inside and the outside.”

Mr. Inside for the Trojans on this night was 6-foot, 8-inch senior Tom Sweeney. Sweeney led the balanced attack with 15 points – with all of his field goals coming in the paint.

The Mr. Outsides for Wissy were Jack O’Neill (14 points), Atkins (10), Bundy (9) and Reed (8).

CB East led 7-1 at the outset of the game, also led by 17-7, but Wissahickon went on a 10-2 run to trail by only a bucket, 19-17, at the end of the period. The teams traded points for the most part in the second period, and the halftime margin was 33-30.

The last Patriot lead came with 3:21 left in the third period on a basket by Skylar Scrivano (nine points) to make the score 40-39. The Wissahickon defense helped fuel a run that gave the Trojans a 46-42 lead by the close of the period.

The final quarter saw more key Patriot turnovers – and a 9-for-14 Trojan performance on the free throw line – to seal the win for Wissahickon.

“They (CB East) are going to beat a lot of teams,” said Wilson. “Number 5 (Kiersnowski) is a very crafty player, and we sure had our hands full with him tonight. He played like he was on a school yard.”

But on this particular night – one (Kiersnowski) couldn’t beat five (Wissahickon defenders).
