And the beat goes on ……………………..
Suburban High School Hockey League
Continental Division
Pennridge (5-8-3, 13) is on its on Mission Possible as the Rams attempt to make the playoffs. And if recent results – two successive SHSHL Continental Division wins – are an indicator – the Rams might just pull it off.
“Our mission right now is to make the playoffs,” said Pennridge coach Frank Reago. “We played a couple of strong games in a row, and I know that the seniors want to go out playing in the playoffs.
“Some people have been writing us off,” added Reago. “We started out rough, but the toughest part of the schedule is behind us. We have to take one step at a time.”
Pennridge took two important steps recently with a 4-1 victory over division leader Souderton (9-5-1, 19) and a 6-1 triumph over North Penn (3-11-2, 8) – both games were played at Hatfield Ice.
“We came in with a plan for both games, and we executed that plan,” said Reago. “If we needed to trap – we trapped – and if we needed to shadow – we shadowed.
“We have had to shift some players around to protect our goaltender,” continued Reago. “We lost our varsity goalie (left the team) and have played junior varsity goalies. And they have done a fine job.”
The Rams will most likely count on senior Mike White in the nets for most of the games. Freshman Dustin Wexler may fill in on occasion.
The blueprint to victory was the same in the wins over Souderton and North Penn. A big third period cemented both wins.
Pennridge and Souderton were tied at 1-1 going into the third period. Matt Brown had scored for the Rams, while the Indians had a goal scored by Brian McMullin.
The Rams closed the game with a flurry of third period goals. Ry Richards, Chris Brown, and Bryn Worthington each scored single goals for the winners.
White was efficient in the nets as he stopped 24 of 25 Souderton shots on goal.
Pennridge led North Penn, 2-1, going in the final period. The goal scorers for the Rams were Douglas Beck and Matt Hicks. Allan Fenton scored the NP goal.
The Rams again closed the game with a flurry of third period goals. Matt Brown scored a pair of goals, while Chris Brown and Tyler Vanderslice scored single goals.
“Our number one line of Chris Brown, Tyler Vanderslice, and Douglas Beck are seniors and I’m really pulling for them to make the playoffs,” said Reago. “It would be a great way for them to end their career.
“And once you get into the playoffs, anything can happen,” added Reago. “You only have to be better than a good team on that night.”
Central Bucks East (7-9-1, 15) moved into second place in the SHSHL Continental Division with a 6-2 victory over William Tennent (0-12-5, 5).
The Patriots were led by John Young and Ryan Joyce – each who scored a pair of goals. Tyler McIntosh and Mike Palmer tallied single goals. Brendan Meehan stopped 19 of 21 WT shots on goal.
Central Bucks South (6-6-3, 15) needed a goal power play goal by Devon Dundore in the final 1:54 of the game to defeat Central Bucks West (1-11-3, 5), 4-3. Kevin Carter and Jake Dicastro assisted on the winning goal.
The goal scorers for West were Matt Wing with a pair of goals, and Johnny Taylor.
Carter and Dicastro also scored goals for the Titans along with Tom Dougherty. Dennis Ruff stopped 20 of 23 CBW shots on goal.
The week opened for South with a 4-2 loss to powerful Council Rock South (15-0-2, 32). Carter and Dougherty were the goal scorers for the Titans.
