‘Jamil Brown – you ARE the man!!!’
The late-great Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas may not be able to exclaim the virtues of Upper Dublin senior Jamil Brown, but those in attendance in the Flying Cardinals 59-53 Suburban One League American Conference victory over Wissahickon surely can.
Brown – who exploded for a career-high 40 points that included five three-pointers and an 11-of-13 shooting clinic from the free throw line – was indeed the man on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
In fact, the spectacular 40-point outburst may not be the most impressive number that Brown showcased for the night. How about the number 3 – the number of points that Brown held Trojan high-scoring senior Jack O’Neill to as part of a box-and-one defense.
“We have been hearing about how good a player that O’Neill was,” said Upper Dublin head coach Josh Adelman. “And Jamil took it personally. He wanted the challenge of showing people that he was every bit the basketball player that O’Neill was.”
The first time that the Trojans faced the Cardinals – at Wissahickon – O’Neill missed the game for Wissy with strep throat. Upper Dublin won that game 52-39 as Brown led the Cards with a modest 13 points.
“Jamil was upset that O’Neill didn’t play in that game,” said Adelman. “When we decided that we were going to play the box-and-one, Jamil said that he wanted to play O’Neill.
“It is one thing to say it, but it is another thing to back it up,” added Adelman. “And he backed it up.”
O’Neill – who scored 31 points in two of his last three games – was held to a single scoring play. O’Neill drove the basket – made the shot – and the free throw for a three point play with 34 seconds left in the third period.
It was his only points of the game.
“We heard that (O’Neill) didn’t consider us one of the top teams in the league,” said Brown. “I wanted prove to him that we were, and the only way to do that was to beat them.
“And a big part of beating them was to shut him down,” added Brown. “We looked at him play on film, and we thought we knew what we had to do to shut him down.”
Brown looked very impressive from the Wissahickon bench.
“Jamil made play after play for them, and a lot of those were on follow-ups and put backs” said Wissahickon head coach Kyle Wilson. “We knew what we had to do, but we didn’t get it done.
“Upper Dublin simply played with more heart and effort than we did tonight,” added Wilson. “They simply wanted the game more than we did.”
Brown was limited to just two first quarter points – and Wissahickon led at the break by a 12-9 score. Sophomore Jordan Reed scored six of his nine points in the initial period.
Brown came out blazing in the second period as he buried four of his jumpers from beyond the arc – scored all 14 of the Cardinal points – and led UD to a 23-17 lead at intermission.
Brown did his work inside the paint in the third period as he connected for six points on three offensive rebounds and put backs. The Cardinals held the lead – 37-33 – despite a pair of 3-point bombs by Wissahickon’s Michael Bundy.
Brown was most impressive with 18 points in the final period. Brown was a perfect 9-for-9 in the final frame from the charity stripe to seal the win for the Cardinals.
“We beat Wissahickon, but we’re looking forward to playing both Plymouth Whitemarsh and Norristown next week,” said Brown as the Cardinals attempt to avenge two earlier losses. “We will go out and play hard – and see what happens.”
If the Colonials and the Eagles see next week what Wissahickon saw last night– look out.
