MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior point guard Ronald Moore (Plymouth Whitemarsh) handed out 11 assists in Siena’s 79-60 win over Marist on Saturday. The win pushed Siena’s winning streak to 13 games and improved its MAAC record to 12-0 (19-4 overall).
Junior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) recorded his seventh double-double of the season in Temple’s 64-52 win over LaSalle in a nationally-televised Atlantic 10 game on Sunday. He finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 74-64 loss to Charlotte, he scored 12 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action due to foul problems. The loss was just the second in the past 15 games for the Owls.
Junior center Ryan Washington (Wissahickon) scored seven points in Kutztown’s 70-58 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. Kutztown was ranked seventh coming into the game. On Wednesday, Washington scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half of Kutztown’s 80-69 win over West Chester. It was the eighth time this season that Washington and teammate Stephen Dennis scored at least 20 points in the same game. They are the only set of teammates in Division II averaging 20 or more points per game. Stephens is a Division II national player of the year candidate.
Freshman Jim Connolly (Souderton) contributed eight points, three assists and one steal in Philadelphia University’s 88-57 win over Concordia on Saturday. Teammate Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) added four points. Philly U, 16-6 overall (8-1 CACC), is ranked #8 in the season’s first NCAA Division II East Region poll.
Thomas Young (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 19 points in IUP’s 83-74 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. IUP, ranked No. 9 in the nation and No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, improved to 17-1 overall. On Wednesday, Young had 19 points in IUP’s 71-59 win over California. IUP committed a team-record low two turnovers.
Senior Robby Pines (Souderton) had a career-high 12 assists in No. 22 East Stroudsburg’s 89-78 win over West Chester on Saturday. As a result of the win, ESU (18-1, 5-1) took over first place in the PSAC East. On Wednesday, Pines made two free throws with five seconds remaining to lift ESU to a 67-65 overtime win over Mansfield. The senior point guard scored four points, tied his career-high with seven rebounds and had five assists and two steals. Chris Pender (Cheltenham) had three points and seven rebounds for Mansfield. Pines entered the week ranked 10th in Division II with 6.5 assists per game, and he directs an ESU offense that has averaged less than 12 turnovers per game in conference play.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) led Princeton in scoring for the second straight game, connecting for 16 points in Princeton’s 59-48 win over Yale on Saturday. Princeton improved to 15-2 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. On Friday, Micir scored 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting that included 3-for-3 from long range in Princeton’s 75-44 win over Brown. She also had six rebounds.
Senior Ally Hinton (Council Rock North) scored nine points in Boston University’s 56-49 win over Maine on Saturday. She is just now 10 points away from the 1,000-point plateau.
Senior Misha Horsey (Cheltenham) scored a team-high 12 points for Stony Brook in its 60-42 loss to Hartford on Saturday. She also handed out three assists.
Senior Antonia Gale (Cheltenham) had eight points and a team-high three steals in LaSalle’s 45-39 loss to St. Joe’s on Wednesday.
Redshirt sophomore forward Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) scored a career-high 12 points – 10 in the first half, which included three three-pointers – in East Stroudsburg’s 47-44 loss to Mansfield on Wednesday. Nicole Pender (Cheltenham) scored 10 points for Mansfield.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) contributed six points and four steals in Millersville’s 59-40 win over Mansfield on Saturday. Her four steals bring her season total to 70, and she is one shy of breaking the school record for steals by a freshman. The Marauders, ranked 24th in the latest poll, improved to 15-4 overall (5-1 PSAC).
Angel Stephens (Bensalem) scored 14 points in Cheney’s 69-66 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday.
Freshman Heather McHugh (Souderton) was one of four players who scored six points in Lock Haven’s 74-51 loss to No. 3 Gannon University on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Redshirt junior Matt Freed (Souderton) will represent East Stroudsburg on the PSAC Fall top 10 list, a list of the top five men’s student-athletes in the 16-school PSAC. He also was named to the first team on the 2009 Football Gazette All-Super Region One team. He will advance to the national ballot for All-America consideration from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, along with the first and second team members from the other three regions across the country. The two most recent honors are the latest in a line of awards for the Warriors’ All-American linebacker. Along with his Academic All-America honor, he is a two-time first team Academic All-District selection and has been named to the Daktronics Division II All-American first team and AP Little All-America third team in each of the last two seasons. Freed led the PSAC in tackles (132) and tackles for a loss (18.0) and tied for the conference lead with 10 sacks this fall when ESU played in the NCAA playoffs for the fourth time in school history. Freed was named the Daktronics Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year and is one of three Warriors to earn multiple AP Little All-America selections.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s first place 200-medley relay that finished with a time of 1:39.22 in Saturday’s meet against Drexel. Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) finished first in the 100 back with a time of 54.67. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) finished third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.64. Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) took second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.58.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) was part of Bloomsburg’s first place 200-medley relay team that finished in a time of 1:51.69 in Saturday’s meet against East Stroudsburg. Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) took second in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.92. Sophomore Kelly Duggan (Central Bucks West) had two career best swims in the 100 breast (1:13.22) and 200 breast (2:40.02).
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of the University of Maryland’s first play 400 relay team with a time of 3:23.68 in the Terps’ 133-108 win over West Virginia on Saturday.
Freshman Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was a member of Penn State’s first place 200 free relay that post a time of 1:32.42 in Saturday’s 176-158 win over No. 28 Ohio State on Saturday. Whirmire finished fourth in the 100 free with a time of 51.59.
MEN’S TRACK 7 FIELD
Sophomore Kyle Raguz (Central Bucks) was part of Shippensburg’s distance medley relay team that set a new school record at Penn State University with a time of 10:04.92 and recorded a provisional qualifying mark for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The time was one second faster than the previous school record set at last year’s Penn State Invitational. On Saturday at the Bison Open & Multi at Bucknell University, Raguz was one-hundredth of a second short of the fastest time in the 500-meter dash, finishing in 1:07.89.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) was part of the Temple women’s 4x800 relay team that shattered the school record at Saturday’s Penn State National Invitational. Running a time of 9:06.05, the women’s 4x800m team broke the 23-year old school record which was set at 9:14.00. Gocht highlighted her weekend by bettering her school record in the 800m, finishing first out of collegiate competitors in an ECAC qualifying time of 2:09.90 (.90 seconds off NCAA provisional marks).
Junior Laura Henzy (Neshaminy) was part of Shippensburg’s 4x400-meter relay that finished in 3:58.38, four seconds faster than Slippery Rock at Saturday’s 12th Annual Bison Open and Multi. Another solid performance in the sprints came from freshman Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) who posted a time of 9.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
WRESTLING
Bloomsburg freshman James Bak (Harry S. Truman) scored three first period takedowns to lead 6-2 after one period in Saturday’s match against Cleveland State. He led 8-2 after two periods and ended up winning a 9-5 decision at 125. Bloomsburg won the match 38-7. On Friday, Bak won by a fall at 125 in Bloomsburg’s 22-17 loss to Clarion.
Redshirt senior Nate Nauroth (Quakertown) returned to the lineup for Shippensburg at 141 pounds in Thursday’s match against York. He picked up his team-high seventh pin of the season in 82 seconds over York’s Josh Trainor. At 157 pounds, senior Bill Purvis (Souderton) got a takedown no more than 10 seconds into his match against Dylan Gialdalia and got a riding time point at the buzzer to earn a 17-2 technical fall, improving his record to 6-7.
Freshman Devon Passman (Central Bucks East) lost a 12-4 major decision at 174 in East Stroudsburg’s 20-15 loss to Rutgers last Monday. David Luthy (Plymouth Whitemarsh) lost a 14-4 major decision at 125.
