VARSITY BOYS BOWLING:
Colonials survive on total pin fall after 2 game falls; PW now tied for division lead-
Norristown, PA- The race to the Suburban One American Boys Bowling division title just got a little tougher for the PW Colonials. With a 2 game lead ahead of Norristown in the division, PW had to win at least 3 games to still have a lead heading into the final game. However, on PW’s home finale in 2009-2010 they would escape with a 2-2 victory, 3,123-2,999 over the visiting Upper Moreland Bears at Facenda Whitaker Lanes. Upper Moreland's Eric LaFlamme entered the match with a 197 average, but might have increased it to over 200 with the way he performed on the lanes.
In game 1, the point spread was only 5 points different, as Upper Moreland nipped PW,1,047-1,042 . For the Bears, Jared Simonsen led with 223, Chris Searless rolled 197, Jared's brother Dean Simonsen bowled 221, Kurt Rosenberger had 200, and Eric LaFlammed scored 206. For the Colonials Kyle Hatfield rolled 192, one-step roller Alex Lesse recorded 150, Nick Tomaine boxed 238, Josh Taylor scored 206, and one-time 300 scorer Chris Hammes bowled 256. Hammes rolled his perfect game against Norristown at Facenda Whitaker Lanes in February 2008. Now, PW technically only had a one-game lead on Norristown.
Game 2 did not go well for the Colonials, as Upper Moreland almost had a perfect player in a 1,056-PW 1,030 game. Upper Moreland's Eric LaFlamme had a perfect game after 9 frames, then rolled over 8 pins as both Upper Moreland and PW players clapped for LaFlamme's almost infallable performance- LaFlamme finished the game with 266. As for the other 4 Bears, Jared Simonsen rolled 201, Chris Searless rolled 196 for a one-pin difference than in game 1, Dean Simonsen recored 224, and Kurt Rosenberger had 169. The Colonials removed Alex Lesse for Pat Galleo, a 213 scorer in JV game 1, and recored 182 for the varsity Colonials in game 2. Also, PW's Kyle Hatfield rolled 234, Nick Tomaine slipped to 175, Josh Taylor tallied 194, but Chris Hammes rolled 246.
After Pw's 2 game defeats, the first and only match they have lost 2+ games in a match at Facenda Whitaker during the 2009-2010 season. PW's first ever and current statisitcian, Scott S.D. Weiss, knew that PW could no longer afford to lose. "We have to win for now on", Weiss said. " This is the closest any PW Boys Colonials bowling team has ever been as close to being division champions. I want us to receive the league banner and trophie".
In a suburbanonesports.com article from last week, PW was reported to have a 1 game lead over Norristown, but statisitician Weiss forgot another win. "Now that the record is clear, we have no more breathing rom, let's just win".
PW had to win by at least 31 pins in game 3 in order to be the victor of the match, splitiing the 2 games. In fact, PW demolished the Bears in game 3, 1,051-896. Eric LaFlamme had trouble throughout his frames, but finished with 200 and a 672 series. Jared Simonsen had foul trouble- lost a 3rd frame strike and 7th frame spare- and had a 190, good for a 605 series. Chris Searless scored 171, finishing with 564. Dean Simonsen dropped down to 159, but still finished with a 604 series. Kurt Rosenberger rounded up 176 for 545 total for the Bears.
The third game damage caused by the Colonials was anchored by Chris Hammes's 236, boosting his final series total to 737. Kyle Hatfield finished off with 181 for a 607 series. Pat Galleo found his way to 189, for a 2 game varsity total of 371. Nick Tomaine rolled off in style with 212 to finish with a 625 aeries. Also crusing in game 3 was Josh Taylor with 233 to finish his series with 633.
“When we play Pennridge on this upcoming Wednesday/Thursday, depending on weather, we will be excited and this match will be more important than the others this season," Scott S.D. Weiss says. “Coach Jeff Blizzard is proud of the way these boys played throughout the season and would like to finish off as the best PW Boys bowling team in its seven years of existence in the bowling program.
