COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 39, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 38

Council Rock South needed some late-game heroics to eke out a 39-38 come-from-behind win over Central Bucks East in Saturday’s fifth-place game at Norristown High School.
The two teams were deadlocked 38-38 when Rock South’s Chelsea Allen was fouled on the baseline. After an East timeout, Allen calmly buried the front end of a one-and-one. She missed the second, and the Patriots came up with the rebound, but their desperation shot at the buzzer fell short.
When it was pointed out to Rock South coach Monica Young that her team’s road in the state tournament might have been easier had she lost, the second-year coach wasn’t interested in hearing any of it.
“You know what – the teams in Philadelphia can be good,” she said in reference to the fact that East will face a city school.
Young, it seems, is more than happy to take her chances against a Reading squad that finished third in the highly competitive District 3, and for one day, she was enjoying her team’s win over a Patriot squad that had defeated the Golden Hawks during the regular season.
“This is a very good team – they’re the number three seed,” Young said of East. “We played with the number one seed (Cheltenham), and we beat the team that won the district (Abington), so I think we have a good team.”
The score was deadlocked 10-10 after one quarter, but the Patriots took a 23-22 lead into halftime. The Golden Hawks outscored the Patriots 10-8 in the third quarter to take a 32-31 lead into the final quarter.
The Patriots went on top 35-32 after East senior Liz Martin connected on a basket that vaulted her over the 1,000-point plateau. The Golden Hawks closed out the game with a 7-3 run that was capped with Allen’s foul shot.
“We’re down but we’re coming back and winning,” Young said. “It was very low scoring – we’ve been averaging in the 50’s.
“Both teams like to a run a little bit, but both teams shut that down. Each possession counted.”
Rock South sophomore Alex Wheatley led all scorers with 15 points while teammates Allen and Alexis Hofstaedter each added eight points. Twins Liz and Sarah Martin led the Patriots with 14 and 10 points respectively.
“The entire second half we weren’t really getting the ball inside, and we weren’t making the best decisions on offense,” Liz Martin said. “It stinks, but this isn’t our last game.”
East will take on the District 12’s second place squad, Central, in Friday night’s opening round state playoff game.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 35, DOWNINGTOWN EAST 32
Council Rock North avenged an early season loss to Downingtown East with its 35-32 win over the Cougars in Saturday’s third place game.
As expected, the game was a low-scoring affair.
The Indians actually jumped out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter but then managed just 20 points over the next three against a Cougar squad that likes to take time off the clock. By halftime, the Cougars had trimmed the Indians’ lead to one, 20-19.
It was a back-and-forth game in the second half, but Sarah Kiely connected on a pair of foul shots down the stretch to put the Indians on top 33-32. Lauren Gold gave the Indians their final margin of victory when she buried a pair of foul shots in the closing seconds.
Devin Gold led the Indians with 12 points while Kiely added 10. Lauren Gold added eight points, four rebounds and four steals.
The Indians will face Mechanicsburg, the fourth place team from District 3, in Friday night’s opening round. Reading edged Mechanicsburg 42-41 in District 3’s third place game.
NORTH PENN 49, SPRING-FORD 39
North Penn lived to see another day, earning the ninth seed and a berth in the state tournament as a result of its 49-39 win over Spring-Ford on Friday night.
The two teams were deadlocked 24-24 at halftime, but the Maidens began to seize control in the second half, outscoring the Rams 13-9 in the third quarter and sealing the win by outscoring their visitors 12-6 in the final quarter.
Senior Shannon Knauer led the second-half charge for the Maidens, scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds – all in the second half.
Steph Knauer also contributed nine points while Mary Ward had eight and Dara Nelson and Taylour Alston, seven points each. Lauren Crisler added five points and Brenda McDermott, four points to round out a balanced attack.
The Maidens will face Wyoming Valley, District 2’s second place team, in a play-in game on Tuesday night. The winner will face District 3 champion Central Dauphin in an opening round game on Friday night.
