Perry Engard has stepped down after eight seasons as head boys’ basketball coach at Souderton Area High School.
The Indians’ coach accumulated a career record of 133-80, which included three Suburban One League titles, six consecutive District One Tournament berths and three PIAA State Tournament berths. This year his Continental Conference championship squad established a new school record for wins in a season with 23.
“I have decided to end a most enjoyable run as head coach at Souderton after eight years,” said Engard in a statement issued by the school. “From a coaching standpoint, I cannot imagine a better place to coach the game.
“The support from district and school administration, faculty, parents, students and fans was unparalleled and aligned in almost perfect fashion (so) as to foster success. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that Souderton gave me, specifically Art Tinner, Art Sell and Brad Clemens for hiring me as head coach and Dr. Amuso, Brad Clemens, Sam Varano and Tom Quintois for their facilitation and direction since that time.”
Engard went on to pay tribute to his coaching staff – Mike Stadnycki, Larry Hill, Michael Ahern, Chuck Porter, Tom Doughty, Bill Fulton, Bill Coddington, Dennis Steinly, Jared Flamer and the late Jeremy Kircher.
“I was very lucky to have a staff that was second to none during my time here,” Engard said. “They are all men who unselfishly gave of themselves to both the players and myself. There would be no success to speak of without each of their integral contributions.”
The Indians’ coach closed the statement by recognizing his players.
“Souderton basketball got better as a program because of the caliber player that has played here,” Engard said. “I am forever grateful to these fine young men for trusting in me and letting me come along for the ride.
“To a man, they were more than just ‘athletes,’ they were ‘players’ who played the game as it should be played – hard.
“However, to remain a top-tiered program, it requires year-round commitment from coaches as well. My wife Yvonne and children (Theresa and Thomas) have allowed me this opportunity, but now that my children are playing age, I want to be a part of that as much as possible – as well as enjoy many of their other successes. To do both would be unfair to everyone, and not the right choice going forward.
“I look forward to remaining the number one fan of players and Souderton and following them with great admiration.”
Athletic director Tom Quintois acknowledged that Engard will be missed.
“We are profoundly saddened to lose one of the most successful coaches in the history of our basketball program,” he said. “Engard has positively affected our student-athletes, school and community.
“We admire his positive leadership, his player relationships and his taking Souderton basketball to new heights. On behalf of the Souderton Area School District, we wish to thank coach Engard for his contributions to our athletic program and wish him well.”
