BASEBALL
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) had a pair of hits in LaSalle’s 3-2 win over Dayton on Sunday. On Saturday, LaSalle sophomore Kevin Christy (North Penn) tossed his first career complete game, allowing just one earned run and striking out five, to lead the Explorers to a 7-2 win over Dayton. He scattered six hits and walked two as he picked up his second straight win and the fourth of his young career. In his last four outings, Christy has struck out at least five batters in each, which includes a career-high six at VMI. He leads the staff with 31 Ks this season. In LaSalle’s 3-1 win over Dayton on Friday, Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) contributed an RBI single. In Wednesday’s 10-6 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore, Christy earned the win on the mound. Kammler had a pair of hits and RBIs in the win.
University of Rhode Island freshman Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) has struck out 11 and walked three in 10 innings of work this season. In his most recent outing, Bradstreet pitched one scoreless inning against William and Mary, striking out one and allowing two hits.
Winthrop freshman Eric Ruth (North Penn) has worked 9 1/3 innings and is 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA. Most recently, he worked two thirds of an inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout in the Eagles’ 10-5 win over Columbia.
Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) had a hit and RBI in Chestnut Hill’s 6-3 win over Philadelphia University in game two of a double header sweep on Wednesday. In Chestnut Hill’s 9-1 win over Philly U earlier in the day, Mike Knipe (Pennridge) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) had two hits – including a double – and two RBIs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 10-6 win over the College of New Jersey on Thursday. Teammate Scott Carroll (Council Rock South) went 3-for-4.
James Quigley (Bensalem) hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Kutztown a 5-4 win over East Stroudsburg in the second game of a double header sweep. Kutztown won the opener 9-3.
IUP freshman Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) is hitting .328 after 61 at-bats with 11 RBIs.
Millersville sophomore Chris Edgar (North Penn) is hitting .333 with one home run and six stolen bases after 51 at-bats. In his team’s 2-0 win over Mansfield on March 19, Edgar drove in both runs.
Senior Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) drove in a run in Bloomsburg’s 4-3 loss to Millersville on Sunday. Freshman Eric Ebert (Council Rock South) added a single. On Saturday, sophomore Joe Crossin (Pennsbury) picked up the win on the mound in Bloomsburg’s 2-1 win over Millersville, allowing five hits and striking out six in four and a third innings of work. He allowed just one earned run. Donofry had three hits in Bloomsburg’s 5-3 loss in the second game of the twin bill. On Tuesday, Donofry hit a two-run double with the bases loaded to give Bloomsburg a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Shippensburg.
Randy Mower (North Penn) threw six shutout innings in St. Joseph University’s 1-0 win over the University of Massachusetts on Saturday. Mower scattered four hits and fanned five.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Thomas Young (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had seven points and seven rebounds in IUP’s 65-53 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in Saturday’s NCAA Division II national championship game at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Crimson Hawks finished the finest season in men’s basketball history with a school-record 33 wins against only three losses and their first trip to the national championship game. In Thursday’s 76-70 semifinal win over St. Cloud State, Young led IUP with 15 points.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Lake Erie College freshman Julia Kudla (Souderton) was named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the week for games through March 7. Kudla scored 10 goals in two games. She had four goals in a loss to Ferrum and led all scorers with six goals at Erskine, leading Lake Erie to the historic first win in program history. Kudla leads all of NCAA Division II with a 5.0 goals per game average and is second in points-per-game nationally (6.75).
LaSalle freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Rookie of the Week following an eight-point week as she scored six goals and dished out two assists while also controlling the draw four times. She had a game-high and career-high six-point night in LaSalle’s 13-11 win over Villanova. McDermott followed that honor with a five-goal effort in LaSalle’s 16-9 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday. In Sunday’s 13-11 win over Duquesne, McDermott had three goals and an assist.
Freshman Natalie Draham (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 12-10 loss to No. 6 Mercyhurst on Saturday. Freshman Maggie Canavan (Springfield) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 13-10 loss to sixth-ranked West Chester on Thursday.
Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored two goals and surpassed the 100-point mark in her career in East Stroudsburg’s 19-9 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. Junior Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) also scored a pair of goals. In Thursday’s 16-9 win over Millersville, Mangiaruga tied a career-high with five goals. On Tuesday, senior Lindsey Moyer (Pennridge) scored three goals while Wesztergom added two goals in ESU’s 20-7 win over Kutztown. It was Moyer’s first hat trick of the season and third of her career.
Allison Berger (Springfield) led all scorers with seven points – which included six assists and one goal – in No. 2 Lock Haven’s 16-8 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. Shippensburg senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) tied a season high by scoring four goals. She also had five ground balls and caused four turnovers while not committing one of her own. Sophomore Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) was inserted into the lineup to take every draw on Saturday and helped the Red Raiders record a season-high 13 draw controls.
In Lock Haven’s 21-1 win over Edinboro on Thursday, Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) contributed a game-high six points, which included four goals and two assists. Berger dished out a game-high three assists. She also added one goal. In Monday’s 21-6 win over IUP, Smyth had five goals and three assists.
In Shippensburg’s 14-8 win over Kutztown on Thursday, junior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) scored a goal and also had two draw controls and two caused turnovers. In Monday’s 18-8 loss to sixth-ranked West Chester, Schnurr and Kuntzmann each scored goals.
Sophomore attack Kelly McKay (Pennridge) scored a goal in Chestnut Hill’s 13-12 loss to Dominican College on Friday.
SOFTBALL
Erin Holloway (Souderton) upped her record to 13-0 on the season after picking up a pair of wins in Sunday’s sweep of a twin bill over defending national champion Lock Haven. In the Crimson Hawks’ 6-4 win in game one, she fanned eight. In IUP’s 4-1 win in game two of the twin bill, Dee Eppinger (North Penn) hit an RBI double in the fourth inning. Holloway struck out five and allowed two hits. On Wednesday, Holloway recorded her first no-hitter of the season in IUP’s 8-0 win over Clarion. The Souderton alum struck out seven in only five innings of work. Eppinger contributed a hit in the win.
In Virginia’s 4-3 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, Nicole Koren was 3-for-4. The win capped a double header sweep for the Cavaliers, who won game one 5-0.
Evelyn Anderson (Hatboro-Horsham) and Megan Harbaugh (Hatboro-Horsham) both contributed a pair of hits in West Chester’s 6-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Sunday. Harbaugh also had a pair of RBIs. ESU freshman Tegan Wendell (Abington) had a pair of hits and Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) had one hit. In West Chester’s 12-5 win over ESU in game one of the twin bill, Anderson had two hits and four RBIs while Harbaugh contributed a home run and two RBIs. Brooke Muth (Pennsbury) had two hits and an RBI. For ESU, both Wendell and Gieringer contributed one hit. Gieringer extended her hitting streak to 10 games and is hitting .452 (14-for-31) in that stretch to raise her season average to .384.
In East Stroudsburg’s sweep of Millersville on Wednesday (7-4, 5-4), Gieringer hit a home run in the first inning of the opener. She was 3-for-5 on the day.
Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run in Maine’s 8-0 win over Hartford on Sunday.
Beth Everist (North Penn) went 3-for-4, which included a home run and three RBIs, in Mount St. Mary’s 11-6 win over Bryant on Saturday. It was her sixth home run of the season – good enough for fourth place on the program’s single season chart. She had a pair of hits in the opener, a 4-0 St. Mary’s win. Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) tossed a two-hit complete game shutout with seven strikeouts in the 4-0 win for her eighth win of the year. She tossed the final 2.1 innings in the second game with one strikeout for her first career save. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) had three hits – including a double, two runs scored and an RBI in the double header. On Thursday, Sadowl earned the win in the Mount’s 6-3 win over Coppin Sate. In Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Rhode Island, Sadowl saw her bid for a no hitter broken up in the seventh inning when Melissa Wilson singled to center with one out. In the final day of the UMBC Softball Spring Classic last Sunday, Zingle had three hits and two runs scored. Everist had a home run in the Mount’s 7-3 loss to Georgetown.
Sophomore Jess Hirschbuhl (Central Bucks South) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Hofstra to a 6-2 win over St. John’s on Wednesday. Hirschbul also had a hit in Hofstra’s 7-3 win over Delaware on Sunday. The win was part of a double header sweep for Hofstra, which improved to 16-5 overall (2-0 CAA).
Senior Lisamarie Ramagli (Neshaminy) delivered a two-run home run in Shippensburg’s 6-5 loss to Millersville in game one of a twin bill on Saturday.
MEN’S TENNIS
Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-0 win in Chestnut Hill’s 9-0 win over Post University on Sunday. In Thursday’s 6-3 win over the University of the Sciences, Richter was part of the number two doubles team that earned an 8-6 win.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Ali Horvath (Souderton) was part of Shippensburg’s third doubles team that earned an 8-5 win in the Red Raiders’ 5-4 win over Chestnut Hill on Sunday. Chestnut Hill junior Sarah Doherty (William Tennent) was victorious at number four singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Temple sophomore Brian Littlepage (Cheltenham) placed second in the discus with a throw of 143-03 in Saturday’s tri-meet against Villanova and LaSalle. Pole vault specialist Brian Smith (Council Rock South) won his event, clearing 13-05.25.
Abu Siddique (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s second place 4x400 relay (3.25.06) in Saturday’s Jim Taylor Invitational.
East Stroudsburg’s Alfred McHanley (Cheltenham) finished eighth in the long jump with a jump of 19-11 at the Lafayette 7-Way Meet on Saturday.
Steve Roberts (Quakertown) was part of Lock Haven’s 4x400 meter relay that won in a record time of 3:18.74 in the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival this weekend.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Temple junior Karrie Finn (Council Rock North) won the 500m with a time of 18:50.06 in Saturday’s tri-meet against LaSalle and Villanova.
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished ninth in the 400m at the Lafayette 7-Way Meet on Saturday.
Shippensburg’s Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) finished eighth in the hammer throw with a throw of 127-09 at Sunday’s Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival. Monique Clemons (Wissahickon) was part of Shippensburg’s first place 4x100m relay that finished in a time of 49.31.
Lock Haven thrower Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) was third in the hammer (150-05) and fifth in the shot put (37-07.75) at the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival this weekend.
