North Penn 8, Hatboro-Horsham 2
Freshman Bryce Mengel made his varsity debut on the mound a memorable one, scattering four hits in seven strong innings while striking out six, walking three and allowing no earned runs.
The Knights – who collected seven hits off of a pair of Hatter pitchers – were led by the two-hit efforts of Peter Edgar and Casey Clauss.
The Hatters plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Knights responded with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the inning and added single goals in the fifth and sixth for good measure.
Mark Grassie contributed a pair of RBIs while teammates Ryan King, James Smith, Craig Lepre and Peter Edgar each had one RBI. Grassie and Brandon Martinez each had a double.
Matt Hollenbeck absorbed the loss for the Hatters.
The Knights return to action on Monday when they will face Parkland in a rematch of last year’s state championship game.
Kennedy-Kenrick 8, Upper Merion 3
Upper Merion took a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning when Kennedy-Kenrick went ahead after plating a pair. The Wolverines added four insurance runs in the seventh. The Vikings held an 8-7 advantage in hits but were ultimately doomed by their five errors that resulted in five unearned runs.
Justin Cunnane absorbed the loss on the mound but deserved a better fate, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight and walking three in six and a third innings of work.
Greg McCuch paced the offense with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Tom Foy added a pair of hits and an RBI, and leadoff batter Matt Shannon had a pair of hits.
The Vikings return to action on Friday when they will face Norristown at home.
