BASEBALL
Adam Kammler (Pennridge) was 2-for-2 with a double in LaSalle’s 9-1 loss to Xavier on Sunday. In Saturday’s 9-8 come-from-behind win over Xavier, it was pinch hitter Eric Kammler (Pennridge) igniting a two-out rally in the ninth when he hit a single through the middle. Chris Umstead (Pennridge) followed and was hit by a pitch. Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) delivered an RBI single as the Explorers plated six runs to earn the win. Kevin Christy (North Penn) started the contest, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven. In Friday’s 6-4 win over Xavier, Gyles had a pair of hits. In Wednesday’s 8-7 win over Temple, Gyles contributed three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI. He also scored two runs. In a 13-4 loss to Villanova on Tuesday in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic, Gyles contributed an RBI double.
Randy Mower (North Penn) worked seven strong innings in St. Joseph's 9-2 win over Duquesne on Sunday. He allowed just one run on five hits, striking out three and walking two as he earned his second win of the season. The win gave the Hawks their third straight Atlantic 10 series victory to start the season.
Freshman Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) earned the win in the University of Rhode Island's 5-3 win over Charlotte on Sunday. The former North Penn standout allowed just one run - despite giving up zero hits - in three innings of relief. As a result of its win, URI won its third straight Atlantic 10 series after also taking 2-of-3 from Temple and Fordham. For the season, Bradstreet is 2-0 with a 3.60 earned run average in six appearances. In 20 innings, he has allowed 19 hits while striking out 16 and walking five.
Sophomore leftfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) contributed an RBI single in Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 loss to Dominican College on Saturday. Dominican swept a pair, winning the second game 9-5. Mike Knipe (Pennridge) was 1-for-2 in game two.
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) delivered an RBI single to knot the score in IUP’s 12-11 win over Shippensburg in the opening game of Wednesday’s twinbill. He scored the game winner from first on a base hit into the gap in right center.
Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) contributed an RBI single in Bloomsburg’s 9-8 win over Mansfield in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Eric Ebert (Council Rock South) also contributed a single. The Huskies dropped the second game 15-8. In Friday’s 14-4 win over Mansfield, Donofry was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs. Bloomsburg dropped the first game of the twinbill, falling 10-8 in eight innings. On Tuesday, Donofry delivered a solo home run in the first inning of Bloomsburg’s 10-6 win over Shippensburg in the second game of a twinbill. Shippensburg won the first game 10-5.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Kranthi Senadhi (North Penn) was an assistant coach for the IUP men's basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division II national championship game. The former standout point guard is in his third year with the IUP program, but this was his first since joining the coaching staff. His duties include on-floor coaching, recruiting, scouting, video exchange and assisting with administrative duties. Senadhi received his bachelor's degree in international business and management from Lock Haven in 2007. He played four seasons for the Bald Eagles, including two as the team captain. As a senior, he was fifth in the PSAC with 115 assists and was tied for first with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.6 to 1. Senadhi was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete all four years. He was president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was a two-time recipient fo the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award in 2006 and 2007.
MEN’S GOLF
Widener’s Chris Delaney (Norristown) finished in a tie for 29th with an 84 in the LVC Spring Tournament.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore Nate Meyer (Abington) scored a goal in Widener’s 9-7 Middle Atlantic Conference win at DeSales on Sunday. It was Widener’s fourth victory in its last five games.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Junior Michelle Mangiaurga (North Penn) connected for the hat trick in East Stroudsburg’s 20-9 loss to No. 5 Mercyhurst on Saturday. She also had a game-high six draw controls. Senior Sara Foley (Neshaminy) netted her ninth goal of the year for her 50th career point as a four-year contributor for the Warriors. Senior Lindsay Moyer (Pennridge) also scored a goal for ESU. In ESU’s 13-5 loss to Bloomsburg on Monday, Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) scored a pair of goals. Natalie Draham (Wissahickon) scored a single goal for the Huskies.
Kelly McKay (Pennridge) contributed a goal and teammate Michelle Wiater (Pennridge) added an assist in Chestnut Hill’s 18-13 win over Dominican College on Tuesday. In Thursday’s 14-13 loss to Wilmington University, McKay had a goal and assist while Wiater had an assist. On Saturday, Wiater contributed a goal in Chestnut Hill’s 17-7 win over Post University.
Junior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) had a game-high five goals in Ursinus College’s 13-3 win over Bryn Mawr on Thursday. Defensively, freshman Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) and Kristen Wampole (Souderton) each had three ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) had two saves in 20 minutes of action.
Junior Allison Berger (Springfield) scored three goals and dished out seven assists for a total of 10 points in Lock Haven’s 25-5 rout of Kutztown on Sunday. Samantha Hurley (Council Rock South) added a single goal for the Lady Eagles, who are ranked second in the latest poll. In Saturday’s 17-15 win over ninth-ranked Gannon, Berger scored just one goal, but it was the game winner. She also had four assists.
Freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) scored a goal and sophomore Sara Ciaverelli (North Penn) had a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers, but LaSalle fell 7-6 in four overtimes to George Washington in the team’s final home game for 2010. The Explorers are 7-6 overall and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) had five ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead the way defensively in IUP’s 10-5 win over Millersville on Saturday. IUP is 6-6 on the season.
Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) contributed four goals in Shippensburg’s 19-8 win over Edinboro on Saturday. The junior attack player converted each of her shots on goal and had one caused turnover and one ground ball. Senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed the hat trick and also picked up three ground balls. In Tuesday’s 10-6 win over Millersville, Kuntzmann contributed a goal, three ground balls, two draw controls and four caused turnovers.
Kuntzmann was named the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week after scoring 10 goals to lead the Red Raiders to a 2-1 mark for the week ending April 7. Kuntzmann converted on all of her scoring opportunities, connecting for 10 goals on 10 shots in three games, including the game-winning goal in Shippensburg’s 13-11 win over Bloomsburg. She also won five draw controls, picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover in the win over the Huskies. The senior midfielder scored four goals and had a season-high eight ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers in the Lady Raiders’ 17-12 loss to East Stroudsburg. Kuntzmann caused nine turnovers, recorded 14 ground balls and won seven draw controls for the week. She has 21 goals, 28 ground balls, 17 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers this season.
SOFTBALL
Nicole Koren (William Tennent) contributed a hit and RBI in Virginia’s 5-3 loss to sixth-ranked Georgia Tech on Saturday. She also had a single and run scored in the Cavaliers’ 5-2 loss on Georgia Tech in the opening game of the twinbill. On Wednesday, Koren picked up her fifth win of the season in Virginia’s 8-4 win over Towson.
Beth Everist (North Penn) was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and three runs scored in Mount St. Mary’s 8-0 win over George Washington on Thursday. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the nightcap, contributing a double in the eighth and scoring the game winner in a 5-4 Mount win. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) singled, stole second and scored a run in the nightcap. She also had a hit in the opener. Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) notched the win on the mound in the nightcap. On Saturday, Sadowl tossed an eight-hit shutout with two strikeouts in the Mount’s 6-0 win over Wagner. It was her fifth shutout of the season. It was her 10th win of the season as she became the fifth pitcher in Mount Division One history to reach double digits in victories. Zingle contributed a pair of hits, including a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. She moved into seventh place in program history with 60 career RBIs. Everist contributed a single and run scored. On Sunday, Zingle was 2-for-6 with two runs score in the Mount’s doubleheader sweep at the hands of Long Island (13-1, 6-2).
Senior Lisamarie Ramagli (Neshaminy) collected one of four hits in Shippensburg’s 1-0 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. The Red Raiders dropped the second game 7-0. Freshman Shauna Byrnes (Norristown) pinch ran and recorded a stolen base in both games.
Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) contributed a sacrifice fly in Maine’s 4-0 win over Binghamton on Saturday. Heading into Saturday’s game, Allen was hitting .500 in Maine’s three preceding games.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) tossed a two-hit shutout in IUP’s 10-0 win over Clarion on Sunday. The junior hurler, who struck out nine, is 18-3 on the season and has a career total of 628 strikeouts, which is second in school history behind Jodie Swavely with 643. Dee Eppinger (North Penn) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. In the nightcap – a 13-4 IUP win, Eppinger also had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Teammate Brittany Allman (North Penn) contributed an RBI double. IUP is 28-7 on the season. On Saturday, Holloway allowed four hits and fanned nine in IUP’s 7-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit. Eppinger had a pair of hits as well as an RBI and run scored. In game two – an 11-4 IUP win, Holloway entered the game with two outs in the fourth and finished the game, recording four strikeouts. On Tuesday, Holloway lost in a pitcher’s duel in game one of IUP’s showdown with Bloomsburg, allowing just six hits while walking three and striking out eight in a 1-0 13-inning loss to Bloomsburg. The Huskies’ only run was unearned. It was Holloway’s first loss of the season after 16 wins. Eppinger had one of eight IUP hits in a game that saw the two teams combine to strand 25 base runners – IUP stranded 12. The Huskies won the nightcap 12-1 to take over sole possession of first place in the PSAC Central.
Meredith Morris (Central Bucks South) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in Lock Haven’s 10-3 win over Mansfield on Sunday. The Lady Eagles dropped the second game 7-6. On Saturday, Morris was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in Lock Haven’s 5-2 win over Millersville. The Lady Eagles won the second game 2-0.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Widener’s Tyla Conicello (Upper Merion) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Women’s Swimming Scholar-Athlete. A three-time honoree, she sports a 3.822 GPA and is majoring in social work and psychology. James Green (North Penn), also a three-time honoree, received that distinction for men’s track and field. Green is a criminal justice major. Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington) was named to the winter academic honor roll for basketball.
MEN’S TENNIS
Daniel Lee (Abington) lost a hard-fought match at sixth singles (6-3, 1-6, 4-6) in The College of New Jersey’s 5-4 loss to #14 Salisbury on Sunday. Lee was also part of TCNJ’s third doubles team that fell by an 8-5 score.
Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was part of the second doubles team that notched an 8-0 win in Chestnut Hill’s 9-0 win over Caldwell College on Saturday. On Tuesday, Richter’s second doubles team earned an 8-2 win in Chestnut Hill’s 8-1 win over Neumann University. Chestnut Hill is ranked seventh in the latest Division II NCAA East Region poll.
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles in Bloomsburg’s 7-2 win over Millersville on Saturday. On Wednesday, Wexler came away with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2) win at second singles in Bloomsburg’s 9-0 win over West Chester. His second doubles team won 8-2.
Luv Sodha (Council Rock North) was part of the second doubles team that notched an 8-6 win in Temple’s 6-1 win over St. Joseph’s on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Ali Horvath (Souderton), Shippensburg’s primary No. 2 singles competitor for the last two years, dropped the final match of her career to Haylee Gardner in Shippensburg’s 7-2 loss to Clarion on Sunday. Horvath, an art major seeking a secondary education certificate, competed in 13 singles matches this season and also competed at No. 3 doubles this season.
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles in Bloomsburg’s 8-1 win over Millersville on Saturday. She was also part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-5 win. On Wednesday, Hasyn notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at first singles in Bloomsburg’s 7-2 win over West Chester. Her second doubles team won by an 8-3 score.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) turned in a season-best time of 14:32.95 in the 5K, which is also a PSAC qualifying time, at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic and Distance Carnival this weekend. Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks) also turned in a season best and PSAC-qualifying time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.76.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Monique Clemons (Wissahickon) was part of the 4x100 meter relay team that turned in a season-best time of 49.23 at this weekend’s Bucknell Outdoor Classic and Distance Carnival. The 4x400 meter relay team, which included Laura Henzy (Neshaminy), finished with a time of 3:50.50. Shippensburg’s second 4x400 squad, which included freshman Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham), finished with a time of 4:09.62. Stuetz turned in PSAC qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles (15.49) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.50). Her tim in the 400m hurdles also a season best. Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) turned in PSAC qualifying throws in the discus (115-00), hammer (144-01) and shot put (38.09.00). Her hammer throw was also her season best.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Justin Brubaker (Souderton) earned both the NEVCA and Western Division Player of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 28. The national leader in kills per set, Brubaker averaged 7.54 kills per game and 8.35 points per set while tallying a .300 hitting percentage for the week. The two-time AVCA All-American posted 34 kills during a 3-1 win over 5th ranked Medaille College, marking the second time this year and fourth in his career that he’s surpassed the 30-kill barrier during a single match. He also averaged 3.31 digs per game during a 3-1 week overall for eighth-ranked PBU. He also had four service aces during the Crimson Eagles’ match with fourth-ranked Baruch College. It is the second time in Brubaker’s career that he has been named the NECVA Player of the Week and the seventh time he’s been honored by the Western Division with the weekly award.
PBU’s NECVA title bid came up short when the Crimson Eagles fell to Nazareth College in the championship contest on Sunday 3-0 (22-30, 28-30, 28-30). It was the program’s most impressive run ever in championship play. Justin Brubaker had a game-high 20 kills. Noah Prickett (Pennsbury) had two kills and six digs. The Crimson Eagles close their season with a record of 23-11. Earlier, PBU defeated Hunter College 3-0 (30-23, 32-30, 30-18) in Friday night’s opening round. Brubaker had 22 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Prickett had 10 digs and two aces. In Saturday’s second round, PBU defeated Endicott College 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-25). Brubaker had 13 kills and 17 digs. The Crimson Eagles followed that with a 3-2 win over top-seeded Rivier College in Saturday’s semifinals (24-30, 30-15, 28-30, 30-23, 15-12). Brubaker had 37 kills, his second highest total of the season. Prickett added nine kills and nine digs.
Junior Jonathan Landis (Pennridge) had 13 kills and 10 digs in Stevens Institute of Technology’s 3-0 loss to sixth-seeded Ramapo College on Friday night in the opening round of the 2010 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Tournament (30-25, 30-27, 30-26). Earlier in the week, behind the 25-kill effort of Landis, Stevens Tech notched its first ever win over Princeton University, downing the Tigers 3-2 (25-30, 30-26, 30-26, 23-30, 15-11) on Wednesday night. In Stevens Tech’s 3-2 loss to No. 1 Juniata last Friday night (24-30, 30-23, 24-30, 30-26, 15-13), Landis had a season-high 27 kills.
