Souderton 17, Pennridge 6
The Souderton Indians came into Tuesday night’s game against neighboring Pennridge with a point to prove after falling to Hatboro-Horsham on the heels of holding their own against league-leading North Penn.
“This game was so important,” Souderton’s Melinda Wojt said. “If we lost tonight, we would have been in fourth place, and we don’t (see) ourselves as a fourth place team.”
The Indians didn’t look like a fourth place team as they sprinted to a 12-1 lead on their way to the convincing win.
“This was really big,” Souderton coach Nicole Bauer said. “We were playing really flat in the Hatboro game. They were fired up to go tonight, and they were really playing as a team.
“Draw controls were key as well as our defense. We tried emphasizing yesterday at practice staying in double teams, and they did a really good job of staying strong with their double teams as well as with their crashing on goal.”
Sophomore Liz Mower led the Indians’ potent offense with five goals and three assists in a standout effort while Lindsay Walbrandt and Danielle Notvest each contributed the hat trick. Walbrandt also had three assists. Kirstin Russell (three assists) and Haley Kershaw (one assist) both had two goals. Emily Lee and Carly Kendall closed out the scoring for the Indians as both contributed a goal and an assist.
Emily Maher paced the Rams’ attack with three goals while Julia Colyar added a pair. Jess Roy contributed a goal and an assist.
The Indians led 7-0 before the Rams got on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half on a Maher goal (Roy assist). By halftime, the Indians were on top 12-1, and the Rams would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
The Indians, according to Souderton’s stats, had 42 double teams as they effectively prevented the Rams from ever finding any kind of offensive flow.
“We try and double team a lot in every game, especially in the midfield because we want them to turn it over so we can get a goal right away,” said Wojt, who helped anchor the Indians’ defense. “We practice that a lot, and we wanted to come out hard tonight.
“We were just so excited, and this is definitely a good feeling we should have every game.”
The Indians improved to 3-2 in conference play while the Rams fell to 2-3.
