Hatboro-Horsham senior Chelsea Edwards was recognized at a special news conference on Friday, May 7, 2010, for accepting a scholarship to play softball at Lock Haven University.
Chelsea Edwards – Lock Haven University (Softball)
Major: Athletic Training
Final list of colleges: Lock Haven, Kutztown, St. Joseph’s University
Reasons for choosing Lock Haven: “I really liked the campus and the coaches and the girls on the team. I liked the other schools too, so it was really hard saying no to the coaches when they really wanted you.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate softball become a reality: “Probably around ninth or 10th grade when I started doing more intense travel softball, and I started going to showcases where the college coaches were on the sidelines. It was a lot of work, but I’m so excited to keep going with my softball career.”
Coach Kelly Krier says: “I’m very excited for Chelsea. She’s really just blossomed into not only a great softball player but a great leader, a great teammate and just a great person to be around. Coach (Erika) Lee and I comment all the time how much we’re going to miss her next year. It’s a pleasure to work with her every day.
“As a sophomore, she came up and was ready to do anything we needed. She was my back-up catcher, my back-up first baseman. Her junior year, we had an opening at first, and Chelsea filled in there and ended up having an unbelievable season defensively, but, more importantly, offensively she led the team in so many critical situations – getting the big hit, moving runners, sacrificing and doing anything she could to help us win, especially with the young team we had last year.
“She brought all of that to the table this year and even more as a captain. Now she’s behind the plate, taking on that role, and she working with young pitchers again. She’s made a definite mark on her younger teammates and because of that we have won games we probably shouldn’t have. She’s just really a treat to coach.”
