BASEBALL
Chris Umstead (Pennridge) delivered a sacrifice fly and teammate Eric Kammler (Pennridge) collected an RBI double in LaSalle’s 5-4 win over St. Bonaventure, giving the Explorers a sweep of the three-game Atlantic 10 series on Saturday. In Friday’s 13-12 win over St. Bonaventure, Umstead had three hits, including an RBI double, while Kammler and Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) both had a pair of hits - both had RBI singles. Kevin Christy (North Penn) threw six innings for the Explorers, allowing eight hits, no walks, three runs and struck out six. Those strikeouts pushed his season total to 74, the fifth most at the school and also gave him 100 in his career. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over the Bonnies, Gyles had two hits, including his 19th double of the season, tying him for the second most ever in a single season at LaSalle.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Franklin Pierce University freshman defender Ben McDannell (Pennsbury) was named to the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Lacrosse All-Rookie Team. McDannell appeared in all 13 games this season with 12 starts and helped anchor one of the top penalty-killing units in the Northeast-10. Franklin Pierce ranked second in the league this season in both fewest man-up goals allowed (11) and penalty-kill percentage (77.6 percent). He was responsible for 16 caused turnovers this season, which was the third most on a Ravens’ squad that ranked third in the NE-10 with an average of 10.23 caused turnovers a game. McDannell was part of a young Ravens’ team in 2010 that produced the finest season to date in program history. Under first-year head coach Rick Senatore, Franklin Pierce posted a 5-8 overall record and a 2-8 mark in NE-10 play. The five wins were the most in a single season in program history. The team was just one victory shy of matching the total number of wins (6) over the previous three seasons combined.
SOFTBALL
Sophomore second baseman Jess Hirschbuhl (Central Bucks South) hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hofstra earned a 7-3 win over Towson on Wednesday on the first day of the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Softball championship at Hofstra. In last Saturday’s regular season finale, Hirschbuhl delivered a tying two-run single with two outs in the seventh to cap a three-run rally as Hofstra overcame a 3-0 deficit in its final at bat before winning 4-3 on a throwing error in the 10th.
Junior Erin Holloway (Souderton) tossed a two-hit shutout to lead IUP to a 4-0 victory over Bloomsburg to create the need for a final game to decide the NCAA Atlantic Region sub-regional, but the host Huskies rebounded to eliminate the Crimson Hawks with a 6-0 win in Sunday’s second game. The loss ended IUP’s season with a school-record 38 wins against 12 losses. The Crimson Hawks matched the 2005 team with three NCAA tournament wins and handed sixth-ranked Bloomsburg only its second shutout loss and sixth defeat of the season. In the opening game, Holloway finished with six strikeouts and one walk in handing Bloomsburg its first shutout since a 3-0 loss to Winona State on March 9. She ended the year with a school-record 28 wins and 325 strikeouts. Earlier in the tournament, IUP defeated West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Dee Eppinger (North Penn) delivered an infield single that plated the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning. She also had an RBI double, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs. IUP fell to Bloomsburg 8-2 later in the day. Eppinger collected a hit and scored a run. In the NCAA Atlantic Regional opener on Friday, Holloway allowed just three hits in IUP’s 3-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan. Eppinger had a hit and scored a run.
Sophomore Samantha Schoell (North Penn) had an RBI double as well as a sacrifice bunt in Temple’s 5-2 win over Rhode Island last Sunday. The Owls split with URI, falling just short of a bid to the Atlantic 10 playoffs. Schoell was named to the Academic All-Conference team in voting conducted among the Atlantic 10 Conference’s sports information directors. She was also a member of the ‘Trustee Ten’ group given to the top-10 student-athletes at Temple based on grade point averages. Schoell boasts a 3.95 GPA in mechanical engineering.
Sophomore Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up the win in Mount St. Mary’s 10-3 win over Saint Francis last Friday. The sophomore pitcher tied the program record with 14 wins in a single season.
Danielle Cyr (Central Bucks West) was one of four Georgetown University softball players who worked with a team of congresswomen who are preparing for a showdown with members of the press corps at the Hoyas’ home Guy Mason Field on June 16 to benefit Young Breast Cancer Survivors. For close to two hours, the Hoyas worked with the congresswomen.
Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) contributed a pair of hits – including an RBI single and a solo home run – in Maine’s 9-1 win over Stony Brook last Saturday to secure second place in the America East and the right to host the America East Tournament.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
West Chester’s Claire Afrassiabian (Norristown) earned a spot on the All-PSAC East singles team. The junior standout was 16-0 overall and 5-0 in conference matches.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Millersville sophomore Zac Kohler (Pennridge) finished fifth in the men’s decathlon at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with 5,863 points. He finished seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.81), sixth in the long jump (6.05m), 10th in the shot put (9.40m), fourth in the high jump (1.91m), sixth in the 400-meter dash (52.67), ninth in the discus throw (23.20m), fourth in the pole vault (3.95m), seventh in the javelin (37.45m) and fourth in the 1500-meter run (4.43.40). Kohler finished 10th in the individual high jump (1.90m). Sophomore Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fourth with a time of 41.99. He finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.13 and was part of the 4x400 relay that finished 13th with a time of 3:25.63.
Shippensburg junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) won the 10,000-meter run at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a time of 30.40.17. He finished fourth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:12.10. Freshman Jason Roth (William Tennent) captured first place in the decathlon 100-meter dash with a time of 11.39. He finished eighth in the decathlon long jump (5.96m) and sixth in the shot put (10.52m). Sophomore Kyle Raguz (Central Bucks) finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.89. He – as well as teammate Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks) - was part of the 4x400 relay that finished sixth with a time of 3:16.54.
Kutztown senior Jason Rebuck (William Tennent) finished second in the discus at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a throw of 47.04m. He finished 12th in the hammer throw with a throw of 47.30m. He finished 11th in the individual shot put (13.54m).
Bloomsburg sophomore Bryan Hennessey (Pennridge) was part of the 4x400 relay team that finished 11th at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a time of 3:23.52.
Lock Haven sophomore Nathan Lipsi (North Penn) was 15th in the hammer throw at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a throw of 43.23m. Sophomore Steve Roberts (Quakertown) was part of the 4x100-relay that finished eighth with a time of 50.79. He also was part of the 4x400 relay that finished fourth with a time of 3:16.54. Senior Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) was eighth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:58.23.
East Stroudsburg’s McHanley Afred (Cheltenham) finished 13th in the triple jump at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a jump of 44 1 ¼.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener senior Nikita Halteman (North Penn), the Middle Atlantic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, finished fourth in the discus at the ECAC Outdoor Championships with a throw of 40.98 meters, seventh in the shot put at 12.00 meters and 11th in the hammer throw at 43.28. Freshman Darcele Llanos (Abington) was part of the 4x100 relay team that finished 13th with a time of 51.03.
Millersville junior Jess Rhyner (Quakertown) was 12th in the high jump at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a jump of 1.52m. Freshman Kate Rhue (North Penn) finished 10th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:57.36.
Bloomsburg freshman Alilia Anderson (Cheltenham) was 17th in the long jump at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a jump of 4.86m.
Temple’s Rebecca Mims (Upper Dublin) was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished 18th in the preliminaries at the ECAC Outdoor championships with a time of 9:10.39. Freshman Victoria Gocht (Temple) ran a time of 2:24.00 in the 800m run prelims but was unable to qualify for the finals.
Shippensburg senior Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third in the shot put and also earned all-conference recognition at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a throw of 12.63m. Freshman Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19. She finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.96. Junior Laura Henzy (Shippensburg) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.32. She was part of the 4x400-meter relay that finished second with a time of 3:48.62. Senior Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 10th in the hammer throw (43.02m).
Kutztown junior Sarah Messner (Upper Dublin) was part of the 4x100-meter relay that finished third at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a time of 48.31.
Lock Haven sophomore Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) finished second in the hammer throw at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a throw of 49.41m. In the discus throw, Moser finished seventh with a throw of 35.82m.
West Chester freshman Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham) finished 16th in the 5000-meter run at the PSAC Track & Field Championships with a time of 19:24.32. Senior Jess Joseph (Souderton) was 14th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:44.55.
