DOYLESTOWN – Pennsbury senior Dante Devine was indeed divine as he jetted for three touchdowns as the South All-Stars raced by the North All-Stars, 34-10.

The victory came in the 35th Annual Bob Sands Memorial-Bucks County Lion Football Classic played Saturday at War Memorial Field.

Devine – who labored in the three yards and a cloud of dust offense with the Falcons during his high school career – was let loose in the high octane offensive scheme of Conwell-Egan head coach Kevin Kelly.

“It was a lot of fun coming out and playing in a spread offense,” beamed Devine who rushed for a team-high 82 yards and added a team-high 101 receiving yards. “In this offense, there were a lot of options for me to run. It was a great experience to play in that system.

“Playing in this game was very special,” added Devine. “It was fun to come back and play with guys that you have played against your whole career.”

The South spotted the North a 10-0 lead, but rallied to score 34 unanswered points to win going away.

“We had a very hard time dealing with their team speed,” said North head coach John Donnelly. “We did some good things early in the game, but their speed caught up with us.”

North scored on its second possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead. North went on a 12-play scoring drive that culminated on a 13-yard scoring blast by Tyler Hamlet (William Tennent).

Hamlet finished the game as the leading ball carrier for the North with 70 yards on 13 carries.

The North added to its lead thanks to a South turnover late in the first period. Pennridge senior Chad Moyer gave North terrific field position with a fumble recovery at the South 26-yard line.

The drive stalled, however, and the North settled for a booming 37-yard field goal off the foot of Sean Banner (William Tennent) on the first play of the second period. Banner was also very impressive on kickoffs and punts during the game.

The rest of the contest was all South.

South scored its lone touchdown of the first half at the 6:06 mark of the second period. Drew Petersen (Truman) latched on to a gorgeous 15-yard scoring strike by Anthony Singlar (Conwell Egan).

Ryan Campbell (Council Rock North) added the extra point, and the score was 10-7 in favor of the North at intermission.

South scored on its first possession of the second half to take a lead they would never relinquish.

The diminutive Woodrow Vorters (Bristol) – all 5-foot, 8-inches of him – darted 46 yards for the score. The placement failed, and the South settled for a 13-10 lead.

South seemed to take the life out of the North with its 11-play scoring drive late in the third period.

The highlights of the drive were a 20-yard pass from Singlar to Devine, and a critical fourth-and-nine completion of 23 yards from Singlar to Andrew Haviland (Council Rock South).

Devine crashed in from the three-yard line, and Campbell’s extra point stretched the lead to 20-10.

The game’s most spectacular plays came in the fourth period – and Devine was the focal point of both.

Devine ran a wonderful post pattern and was hit in stride by a bullet from Singlar. The result was an 81-yard touchdown connection.

Later in the fourth period, Devine took a pitch from Singlar on a fourth-and-two and sped 51-yards in the open field to pay dirt.

“Both teams came here to win,” said Devine. “The game is a lot of fun, but you don’t have fun losing.”

That was evident on the face on North MVP Tony Latronica (Quakertown).

“Winning the MVP was a nice honor,” said Latronica who held his engraved MVP plague. “The guys on this team were great to play with, but I was hoping for a better game.

“I thought coach Donnelly did a great job of getting us ready for the game,” added Latronica. “But we didn’t get it done.”

“Of course we were hoping for a different outcome,” said Donnelly – who will coach next fall at Central Bucks East. “But it was a great experience for the kids to play with kids they have been rivals with their whole careers.

“The Pennridge and Quakertown kids; the CB East kids with the CB West kids and the CB South kids; and the Tennent kids and the Wood kids,” added Donnelly. “It was a real good experience.”

Simply Devine.
