Felder Gets Full Ride to Dowling

Recent Cheltenham grad Shayla Felder had made a verbal commitment to accept a basketball scholarship to Kutztown University, but a late-season entry into the recruiting war resulted in the all-state star accepting a full basketball scholarship to Dowling College in Long Island, N.Y.

What was the progression that led you to Dowling?  “At one of our playoff games at Norristown, (Lower Merion’s) Rekik Worku said that her coach was the daughter of the head coach of Dowling (Joe Pellicane), and her coach would put in a good word to her dad. I didn’t really pay it any mind because I was so set on going to Kutztown. The Lower Merion coach and the head coach of Dowling came to our last game of the season against Central Dauphin, and he liked what he saw, and he offered me a full scholarship after the game.
“I went on a visit, and after I met the team and explored the campus, I liked it. It’s a small college, so it fits me perfectly. It’s a full scholarship, and I liked it here.”
Coach Bob Schaefer said. “Shayla did everything for us. We had many games where it came to her going one-on-five the last five minutes of the game - holding the ball, making them foul her and making her foul shots or coming up with big shots that she made and got us within range to win the game.
“She has great speed, a great shot – a real nice jump shot, and she’s a very good foul shooter. She very quietly led the team and did everything she was asked to do. I think this is great. I think she’ll like it at Dowling and will do very well. We’re certainly going to miss her tremendously.”
