MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Shippensburg teammates Brian Quintrell (North Penn) and Eric Haidinger (Council Rock North) finished 23rd and 25th respectively with times of 21:23 and 21:32 in Saturday’s Galen E. Piper Alumni/Open Cross Country Challenge.
Freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) had an impressive collegiate debut, placing 11th overall and seventh for Penn State with a time of 18:34 at the Lock Haven Dolan Duals on Friday. He was the first freshman to cross the finish line.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Bloomsburg freshman Martina Drew (Neshaminy) finished in 33rd place with a time of 19:01 at the Bison Open on Saturday at Bucknell University. Sophomore teammate Lauren Bond (North Penn) turned in a time of 20:05.
Shippensburg freshman Megan Rhyner (Quakertown) took third place at the Galen E. Piper Alumni/Open Cross Country Challenge with a time of 15:36.
Lock Haven’s Laura Histand (Neshaminy) finished 22nd with a time of 16:26.58 in Saturday’s Dolan Duals. Teammates Nicole Wasniewski (Souderton) and Christy Ohmott (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 32nd and 44th respectively with times of 17:30.69 and 24:08.75.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sophomore goalie Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham) made four saves to earn her first shutout of the season in Drexel’s 1-0 win over Ohio University. Included in those saves was a huge stop of a shot on a penalty corner with just under eight minutes to play. On Wednesday, Phillips had four saves in Drexel’s 7-1 rout of St. Joe’s. Teammate Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) contributed a goal and an assist, and Megan Keller (Hatboro-Horsham) also contributed a goal.
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s first Player of the Week of the 2010 season. O’Donnell’s two-goal, three-assist performance helped lead the Terps to wins over Drexel and Villanova. Currently, O’Donnell leads all active NCAA players with 215 career points, 69 career goals and 77 career assists, which is also an ACC record. On Sunday, O’Donnell contributed a goal and an assist in Maryland’s 3-1 win over 16th ranked Old Dominion.
Junior Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) contributed a goal with an assist from teammate Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) in 18th-ranked Penn State’s 2-1 loss to fifth-ranked University of Connecticut. The assist was the first of McCartin’s career.
Sophomore Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed two goals and an assist in Lebanon Valley’s 4-1 win over #13 Lynchburg on Saturday. Vasey was last year’s Commonwealth Conference rookie of the year. Lebanon Valley is ranked sixth in the Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association Preseason Top 20 Poll.
Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) scored an unassisted goal in Bloomsburg’s 7-1 win over Franklin Pierce College on Sunday.
Sophomore Kerry Senderling (North Penn) contributed an assist in No. 2 Shippensburg’s 9-1 rout of St. Michael’s on Sunday.
Senior forward Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) contributed a goal and an assist in No. 5 East Stroudsburg’s 3-1 win at No. 4 Stonehill on Sunday. On Saturday, Kocics also had a goal and an assist in ESU’s 5-0 win over Merrimack.
Sophomore Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) scored a goal off a corner in LaSalle’s 6-4 loss to Georgetown on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Sophomore Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on a 43-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to give Temple a 25-22 lead on its way to a 31-24 come-from-behind win over Villanova in the 2010 Mayor’s Cup at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday night. McManus, who connected on a career-high four field goals in the win, also had field goals of 53, 44 and 40 yards.
Redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) recovered a pair of fumbles in East Stroudsburg’s 57-0 win over Pace in Saturday’s season opener. Junior linebacker Mike Bergey (Souderton) had a first-quarter interception.
T.J. Chiarolanza (William Tennent) connected on a 28-yard field goal in Lycoming’s 24-17 loss to Rowan on Saturday.
Senior Jon Natter (Abington) had 10 tackles in Widener’s 37-0 loss to Alfred on Saturday, sharing team-high honors in that category.
Junior linebacker Vic Iturbides (Pennsbury) led West Chester with a career-high seven tackles in the Golden Rams’ 31-0 loss to 19th-ranked Delaware on Thursday night.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Drew Hilinski (Pennridge) converted a penalty kick in Widener’s 4-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Sunday.
Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) scored on a penalty kick to give Lafayette a 1-0 win over Temple on Sunday in the final game of the Puma Classic.
Francis Miller (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College in Thursday’s season opener.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Senior forward Kelsey Stoka (Neshaminy) scored an unassisted goal in Bloomsburg’s 2-0 win over Georgian Court University in Saturday’s opener.
Senior Brianna Costello (Council Rock North) turned a corner kick from freshman Lauren Heath (Council Rock South) into a goal in Temple’s 7-0 win over Howard on Sunday. Senior Kelly Diviny (Council Rock South) contributed an assist. On Friday, Deviny contributed a goal and an assist in Temple’s 4-2 loss to Villanova. Junior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) started in goal for the Owls, turning away four shots in the first half.
Sophomore goalie Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) made four saves in LaSalle’s 2-1 win in overtime over Central Connecticut State on Sunday. It was her eighth win in 12 starts. On Friday night, Pakhtigian posted a shutout in LaSalle’s 2-0 win over Hartford.
Junior midfielder Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) broke a scoreless tie in the 41st minute of East Stroudsburg’s 2-0 win over Concord on Sunday.
Brittany Couper (Bensalem) is part of a West Chester defense that allowed just 6.5 shots per game for its opponents last season. She started all 22 games last year and scored a goal. Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy) was the team’s second-leading scorer last year with eight goals in 18 appearances, including a pair of game winners. Teammate Diana Rowan (Neshaminy) saw action as a reserve in the midfield last year. Transfer senior Devon Swaim (Neshaminy) spent the first half of her college career at the University of Tennessee, and she is expected to contribute at forward. Freshman Brianna Hires (Neshaminy) adds depth to the forward line. The Golden Rams are ranked 16th nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Sophomore Regina Doherty (William Tennent) returns to the lineup for a Chestnut Hill squad that was ranked seventh in the CACC at the close of the 2009 regular season.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) had 10 kills and 12 digs in East Stroudsburg’s loss to Henderson State at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites Class at Texas Woman’s University on Saturday. The 10-kill effort moved Stark into the top 10 in ESU career history with 733 kills. In ESU’s loss to Arkansas Tech earlier in the day, Stark led the Warriors with 10 digs. On Friday, Stark led ESU with 17 combined kills in a pair of losses to Harding (Ark.) and Drury (Mo.).
