217 Photography Field Hockey Players of the Week*
(For period ending Sept. 18, 2010)
This weekly award is sponsored by Pete Malone and 217 Photography. Winners are chosen based on nomination of coaches.
National Conference 217 Photography Player of the Week
Alexia Ewing – Senior defender from Bensalem High School
Notable accomplishment:
Ewing is the undisputed anchor of Bensalem’s defense. A first team all-league defender last year, she helped lead the Owls to a 2-1 win over Pennsbury last week. It was the first time Bensalem had defeated Pennsbury since 2004, and making the story even more remarkable is the fact that the Owls have just 12 players on their entire roster this season.
Notes from the coach:
“Alexia is a leader and a coachable player, and she’s also a smart player. With her hard work, motivation and natural abilities, she can stop any offensive players,” said coach Amanda Tu.
About Alexia:
Part of the game I enjoy most: Honestly, there is nothing specific that I enjoy most. I just love the game of field hockey in general. Throughout the years, it has become my passion and something that I love to do and strive hard to excel at.
Most memorable moment playing hockey: Without a doubt, hearing the final seconds of the Pennsbury game being counted down and realizing that we finally beat them.
My role model is: Kay Yow, former North Carolina State basketball coach. I admire her for her perseverance and dedication while enduring tough times.
Music that gets me pumped before a game: Anything that involves a quick tempo. “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled has been on replay the past few weeks.
Vanilla or chocolate: Chocolate 24/7
Continental Conference 217 Photography Player of the Week
Courtney Heverly – Junior captain and center midfielder from Quakertown High School
Notable accomplishment:
Heverly is a leading force on Quakertown’s offense and has already scored eight goals and contributed numerous assists. She had the game-winning goal in the Panthers’ win over Hatboro, four goals in a win over Lansdale Catholic, two goals against Saucon Valley and the only goal in a loss to Central Bucks West. A year-round hockey player, Heverly is on Marajoka’s club team, participates in Futures and will be attending the National Hockey Festival. She was asked to participate in the elite world camp 2011 in Barcelona, Spain.
Notes from the coach:
“Courtney doesn’t just score goals but is a leader on our team and an athlete that works to make herself and teammates better daily. She is a player that goes the extra distance. She is never satisfied and is always trying to work harder to make herself and those around her better. Field hockey is her passion,” said coach Peach Draper.
About Courtney:
Part of the game I enjoy most: The feeling after I score and when my team wins a game.
Most memorable moment playing hockey: When I scored the winning goal for my team last year against the defending champs, Central Bucks South, with 25 seconds left in the game.
My role model is: Serena Williams
Music that gets me pumped before a game: Music by Lil Wayne and Kid Cudi

American Conference 217 Photography Player of the Week
Shannon Briscoe – Senior co-captain and right defensive back from Upper Dublin High School
Notable accomplishment:
Briscoe has been a consistent performer on defense all season and has been instrumental in the Flying Cardinals’ strong start. She is the only returning defender in the backfield with experience, leading an inexperienced defense that includes a freshman and sophomore in their first year on varsity as well as a sophomore goalie and a junior adapting to a new position.
Notes from the coach:
“Shannon is the glue that is helping the rest of the girls work together. She is a terrific leader by example with a work ethic that is second to none. She is encouraging to her teammates and plays with a high level of intensity that sets the tone for the young team we have this year,” said coach Heather Boyer.
About Shannon:
Part of the game I enjoy most: I love that for two hours each day all I need to think about is field hockey. I am actually encouraged to forget about the drama of high school, friends, school, college plans and focus all my energy on my team and my sport.
Most memorable moment: Last year, the seniors on the team were strong; a force to be reckoned with, and I often felt my contributions to the team were minimal. But after the halftime talk of one particularly tough game, one of these seniors told me she needed me in the circle. It meant so much to know I was making an impact after all.
My role model: Xavi Hernandez
Music that gets me pumped before a game: Jesus Walks, Kanye West, especially when Wendy Laurent and I harmonize!
