Langhorne – Abington head coach Tim Sorber called Neshaminy senior Corey Majors a “special player” before his Ghosts met the Redskins in the Suburban One League National Conference game for both teams.

And his opinion surely didn’t change after Neshaminy handled the Galloping Ghosts, 28-10.

“Majors is a difference maker on both sides of the ball,” said Sorber of the Villanova Wildcat bound linebacker/fullback. “He is just a dominant player.”

Majors was indeed an impact player on both sides of the football, and it was his marvelous play at inside linebacker that had the biggest influence on the outcome of the game.

The biggest weapon in the Abington arsenal is quarterback/running back Julien Ireland. The gifted senior was involved in an astonishing 84 percent of the Ghosts’ offense in the game - either running or passing the football.

“We knew a lot about him from last year,” said Majors. “He is a real weapon and can do almost anything on the football field.

“We focused on him because he can make the big play,” added Majors. “And I thought we did a good job on him.”

Ireland was undeniably held in check with 96 yards of total offense.

“Neshaminy did a great job of keeping us from getting to the edges,” said Sorber. “They are very physical up front, and we had some trouble there.”

Perhaps the most physical of the Neshaminy linemen were Tyler Stabilito and Ryan Katona. The dominating pair adds up to 518 pounds of muscle on the defensive line.

The Redskin offense also had its share of spotlight moments.

The Skins generated 455 yards of offense with a balanced attack that had 255 yards on the ground and another 220 yards in the air.

Majors – who rushed the ball just six times for 86 yards – scored on a pair of impressive touchdown runs of 15 and 45 yards.

“When I do come off the field, it is usually when we have the ball,” said Majors. “I think the coaches want me on the field for every play on defense.”

Anthony Woodroffe rushed for a game-high 90 yards on 19 carries, while Sean Ulmer chipped in with 57 yards on nine totes.

The Neshaminy passing game was also impressive as senior quarterback Charlie Marterella completed 14 of 20 passes for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Redskins wide receivers – senior Dwight Williams and sophomore Justin Andrews were terrific. Williams caught five balls for 106 yards and a score, while Andrews snared five passes for an additional 73 yards and a touchdown.

“I call Justin my little brother,” smiled Williams. “We talk football all day long, and this was a great win to start our (conference) schedule.”

Abington actually led 3-0 after the first period. A Redskin fumble was returned by Ghost defensive end Chris Ruhl to the Skins 16-yard line.

Abington could not cash in with a touchdown, but Ian MacMillan was perfect on a 27-yard field goal.

Neshaminy scored three touchdowns in the second period to put the game away.

Majors capped a six-play, 53-yard drive with his 15-yard TD burst. Marterella threw a seven-yard scoring strike to Andrews, and Marterella capped the scoring before intermission with a gorgeous 42-yard scoring dart to Williams.

Majors scored what proved to be the final points of the game for the Skins in the third period. The powerful Majors showed his speed to sprint 45 yards into the end zone. Sean Sheridan booted his fourth successful extra point of the game to conclude the scoring for the winners.

Abington would score the game’s only points in the fourth period – and it would be a defensive touchdown.

Ghost corner back Josh Lee scooped up a Redskin fumble at the 30-yard line and raced untouched for the touchdown. MacMillan’s placement would make the score final at 28-10.

Abington (2-2, 0-1) will meet winless Council Rock North (0-4, 0-1) next week. Last year, the Ghosts were throttled by the Indians 31-3.

“We have a bad taste in our mouth from that game,” said Sorber. “We’ll be excited to see them again.”

Neshaminy (4-0, 1-0) will meet Bensalem (1-3, 1-0) next Friday – a surprise winner over Pennsbury.

“That score sure got our attention,” said Majors. “But we really do respect all of our opponents.”

And those opponents also respect that “special player” from Neshaminy – Corey Majors.
