MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list announced early last week by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. A 2010 first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference and USBWA All-District performer, Allen became the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71, averaging 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as a junior. The Pennsbury alum led the team in rebounding, blocks (50) and field goal percentage (.536) while ranking third with 83 assists. In the Owls’ final regular season game, Allen became the 46th player to score 1000 points. Allen, who shared team MVP honors with Ryan Brooks, helped the Owls to a 29-6 record and a third straight A-10 championship. Temple was ranked #12 in the final Associated Press poll. Allen also was a member of the 2010 USA Basketball Select squad.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Millersville’s Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) finished fourth with a time of 27:14.3 in the Friends of Sarah Open 8K at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Millersville’s Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) finished 19th with a time of 19:46 in Saturday’s Friends of Sarah Open 5K hosted by Franklin & Marshall. For the first time in school history, Millersville is nationally ranked. Following the team’s impressive showing at the Paul Short Invitational, the Marauders moved into the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II national team rankings at No. 15. Millersville placed sixth at the Paul Short Invitational, topping nationally-ranked teams Kutztown, Tampa and Stonehill. In addition to Blum, SOL alums Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) and Kate Rhue (North Penn) are also on Millersville’s roster.
Freshman Martina Drew (Neshaminy) was the fifth Bloomsburg runner across the finish line at the DeSales University Invitational on Saturday, finishing with a time of 25:34. The Huskies finished second overall.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) contributed a goal and three assists in Maryland 11-2 rout of Pacific on Sunday. O’Donnell also scored a goal in the Terps’ 3-1 win over 14th ranked Duke on Saturday. Maryland, ranked 2nd in the latest poll, is 12-1 overall (4-0 ACC).
Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) helped set up a goal in Penn State’s 4-1 win over No. 7 Michigan State on Friday. The Nittany Lions, ranked 16th in last week’s pool, improved to 9-3 overall (3-1 Big Ten).
Sophomore Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) broke the Lebanon Valley single-season assists mark with three assists in Saturday’s 7-0 win over Shenandoah. The three assists took Vasey’s season total to a national-best 20 through 12 games. The Dutchmen, ranked fourth, improved to 12-0, 2-0 CC.
Freshman Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored twice and added an assist to help lead Gwynedd-Mercy to a 4-2 non-league win over Swarthmore on Sunday. Junior Casey Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) also scored for the Griffins. On Saturday, junior Nicole Tourdot (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-1 non-league win over visiting Ramapo.
Kutztown is ranked third in the South Region in the initial Division II field hockey poll that was released last Thursday. Kutztown is also ranked fifth in the Kookabura/National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association top 10 poll. The Golden Bears are 5-3 overall. SOL alums on Kutztown’s roster are Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn), Kelly McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham), and Alexa Doyle (Neshaminy).
Senior midfielder Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) was named PSAC East Field Hockey Athlete of the Week last Monday. Kocis had two goals and four assists to lead the Warriors in scoring in three victories as they improved to 10-0 on the season and boast the longest winning streak in school history. She scored ESU’s first goal and assisted on two others in ESU’s win at Bloomsburg. The win was the first over the four-time defending national champion Huskies since 2005. Kocis’ goal against Bloomsburg was the 20th of her career and gives the three Kocis sisters – Nicole (2001-04), Ashley (2003-06) and Brittany (2007-10) – a total of 80 career goals. Nicole was an all-conference midfielder and had four goals and 14 assists, and Ashley was the nation’s leading scorer in 2006 and has a school record 56 goals to go along with 13 assists. Brittany has added 17 assists to her career scoring total.
Kocis. scored a pair of goals in East Stroudsburg’s 8-2 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. ESU was ranked first in the NCAA Division II South Region in the first set of rankings released last week. Earlier in the week, ESU moved up to NO. 2 in the NFHCA Division II field hockey poll behind only Shippensburg. SOL alums Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) and Carly Hughes (Souderton) are also on ESU’s roster.
Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) contributed an assist in Drexel’s 3-0 win over William and Mary on Sunday. Teammate Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away a pair of shots in goal to preserve the shutout for the Dragons, who were ranked 20th in last week’s national poll. The win was the seventh in a row for Drexel, which improved to 10-3 overall, 3-0 CAA. On Friday night, Fleischut contributed a goal and an assist in Drexel’s huge 3-2 win over 19th ranked Old Dominion. Phillips had four saves.
Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) is a starter for top-ranked University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels defeated Boston College 3-0 on Friday to improve to 13-0 overall (3-0 ACC).
Sophomore Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored her first career goal, breaking a 1-1 tie with less than 15 minutes remaining and propelling Cabrini to a 3-1 win over unbeaten Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Keystone College on Saturday.
Senior Megan Purcell (Pennridge) made five saves, which included a penalty stroke, in Widener’s 4-3 win over Albright on Friday. On Tuesday, Purcell turned away seven shots in Widener’s 4-0 loss to third-ranked Messiah.
FOOTBALL
Entering this weekend’s action, Temple sophomore Brandon McManus (North Penn) was No. 35 in the nation in field goals (1.40).
Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) ran for 90 yards and caught two touchdown passes to help undefeated Kutztown secure its first winning season since 2003 with a 38-31 win over East Stroudsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division contest on Saturday afternoon. He also finished with six tackles. Quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) completed 19-of-27 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Morton has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 11 straight games and at least two scoring tosses in nine of KU’s last 10 games. Defensively, Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) led Kutztown with a season-high 11 tackles. Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) recorded a fumble and went 38 yards for the touchdown for a Golden Bear defense that limited ESU to 94 rushing yards. Redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) led ESU with 11 tackles, four tackles for a loss and three sacks. Freed moved past All-American and NFL veteran Mike Reichenbach (1980-83) with 341 career tackles. He also has 19 career sacks. For Freed, it was his 20th career game with 10-plus tackles in his 29th career start. His 3.0 sacks were a career high, and his 4.0 tackles for a loss tied his career best.
Nick Gounaris (Pennsbury) had seven tackles to lead Lock Haven in its 49-6 loss to Clarion on Saturday.
Nick Browne (North Penn) had a game-high 16 tackles, including two for a loss, in Lebanon Valley’s 35-28 loss to Wilkes on Saturday. Blair Ransom (Hatboro-Horsham) had a six-yard touchdown run. In last Saturday’s 38-6 loss to #13 Delaware Valley, Ransom had 25 yards rushing and teammate Pete Panichi (Upper Merion) added 23 yards.
Lycoming senior T.J. Chiarolanza (William Tennent) is tied for ninth in the nation in field goals, hitting 1.50 per game.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Eight North Penn grads participated in the Philly 5 Fall Lacrosse Tournament at Temple University last weekend. Representing LaSalle were Ali Herman, Sara Ciaverelli, Kaitlin Colbridge, Danielle Horn and Lauren McDermott. Julie Mineweaser and Brittany Hanrahan were from St. Joe’s while Lauren Caminiti represented Temple. North Penn seniors Macie Hauck and Tory Brady will be joining the North Penn alums next year. Hauck has made a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at Temple, and Brady has made a verbal commitment to St. Joe’s.MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored his first goal of the season at the 34:57 mark of the opening half of Bloomsburg’s 3-1 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday night.
Ryan Richter (William Tennent) scored both goals in LaSalle’s 2-1 win over Fordham on Friday in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. Earlier in the week, Richter was named the Atlantic 10’s Player of the Week. He picked up his first honor of the season after lifting the Explorers to two straight 1-0 wins with game-winning goals in both matches. His winner against St. Joseph’s came with just 29 seconds remaining in the first half, and he scored a first-half goal that proved to be the game winner against Temple. The senior leads the Explorers in goals (five), points (11) and shots taken (41). He ranks second in the Athlantic 10 in goals and points. His 41 shots (5.12/game) is tops in the conference.
Sophomore Drew Hilinski (Pennridge) took four shots in Widener’s 2-1 overtime loss to Haverford on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Junior Melissa Kornock (North Penn) scored a goal in her seventh straight game, converting a penalty kick with 27:27 remaining in the second half to give IUP a 1-0 victory over Gannon on Saturday night. On Wednesday, Ashley Moyer (Pennridge) scored an early goal in IUP’s 2-0 win over Mercyhurst. Kornock contributed an assist. Last Saturday, Kornock scored a pair of goals in a 4-3 loss to No. 18 West Chester in PSAC soccer action on Saturday.
Maddy Evans (Abington) is playing for a Penn State squad that notched a 2-1 win at Northwestern on Friday and came back to defeat Iowa 3-0 on Sunday. The Nittany Lions are now 5-7-1 overall, 3-1-0 Big Ten).
Kutztown is ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America/HendrickCars.com poll. Regionally, Kutztown is ranked third in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Atlantic Region. The Golden Bears are 7-3 overall (4-3 PSAC). SOL alums on Kutztown’s roster include Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy), Sam Moyer (Central Bucks West), Emily Froelich (Pennridge), Allie Riegel (Central Bucks West) and Caitlyn Schlupp (Council Rock South).

Widener moved to No. 24 in the country in last week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. Widener also remained No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, the fourth straight week it is in the top 10. Patty Squicciarini (North Penn) is on Widener’s roster.

Freshman Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) remained unbeaten on the season with an 8-0 win at #2 doubles in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 9-0 win over Rosemont, helping the Griffins secure the top seed in the 2010 CSAC Team Tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) had nine kills, a solo block and three block assists in East Stroudsburg’s 3-2 win upset of Mercyhurst on Saturday (21-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-13). Stark had 10 kills and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss to Edinboro. It was her 11th career double-double. She had seven kills in a 3-0 loss to Gannon. Stark moved into the top 10 in career aces with 96, posting five over the three matches. She is currently sixth in kills and 10th in blocks.
Katherine Tohancyzn (North Penn) had two kills and a dig in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 loss to Holy Family on Friday. On Wednesday, Tohanczyn had one kill and two assists in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 win over Lincoln University.
