MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple is ranked #21 in FOXSports.com preseason men’s basketball poll. The Owls return three starters, including first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference performer senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury).
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Ursinus sophomore Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) finished Saturday’s Gettysburg Invitational with a time of 27:49.21. Ursinus finished 14th at the invitational.
Eric Haidinger (Council Rock North) finished in a time of 28:13 for a Shippensburg squad that finished second at Saturday’s Gettysburg Invitational.
Chestnut Hill junior Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) finished with a time of 29:40.20 in Saturday’s Delaware University Blue and Gold Invitational. The men’s team finished seventh out of nine teams with a total of 194 points.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Rebecca Mims (Upper Dublin) turned in the second-best time for Temple in Saturday’s Penn State National meet, finishing the 6,000-meter race in a time of 23:45. It was the first time in over a year that Mims was not the Owls’ top finisher in a meet.
Bloomsburg freshman Martina Drew (Neshaminy) finished 21st at the Lafayette College Leopard Invitational on Saturday. The Huskies finished fourth as a team.
Miranda Ward (Harry S. Truman) ran a time of 22:01.70 at the Delaware University Blue and Gold Invitational, finishing first among Chestnut Hill runners and 67th overall. The women’s squad finished ninth out of nine teams with 241 points.
FIELD HOCKEY
University of Maryland senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) was named the Women’s Sports Foundation’s National Sportswoman of the Year at the annual Salute to Women in Sports banquet at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York on Tuesday night. O’Donnell, the 2009 Honda Sports Award winner, won the Sportswoman of the Year award for her accomplishments from August 2009 through July 2010. During that time period, she helped lead the Terrapins to their first-ever 18-0 regular season record and an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. She led the NCAA in assists and points and broke the ACC’s career assist record. She is currently a starter for the U.S. Senior National team. Over the last year, she played in over 40 international games. Other nominees included USA Softball star Jennie Finch, Olympic hockey gold medalist Meghan Agosta and Betsey Armstrong, goalkeeper for the U.S. Water Polo team. Past winners of the award include Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, basketball stars Sue Bird, Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi and Sheyl Swoopes as well as soccer star Mia Hamm and tennis players Serena and Venus Williams.
O’Donnell broke Maryland’s career goals record with two scores in Maryland’s 7-2 win over Delaware on Sunday. She also contributed an assist. O’Donnell already has Maryland’s career points and assists records, but her 85th and 86th career goals gave her the scoring record as well. As a result of the win, the second-ranked Terps improved to 14-1 overall (4-0 ACC).
Sophomore Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) was named NEC Co-Player of the Week for games played Oct. 4-10. Schneider totaled two goals and an assist, leading Rider to a 2-0 week by tallying five points. She had a hand in both game-winning goals as the Broncs defeated Villanova and Robert Morris. Against the Wildcats, Schneider provided all of Rider’s scoring in a 2-1 overtime win. Her first goal opened the game’s scoring in the 22nd minute and her second tally provided the difference 6:08 into OT. Against Robert Morris in the NEC opener, Schneider helped set the tone 52 seconds into the game, assisting on the game-winner.
University of North Carolina junior Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) scored on the rebound of a goalie save to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead in Sunday’s game against James Madison University. Top-ranked UNC went on to earn a 4-0 win, upping its winning streak to 20 games and picking up its ninth shutout of the season.
Senior midfielder Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) picked up her 10th assist of the season in East Stroudsburg’s 6-1 win over Slippery Rock on Sunday. As a result of the win, the top-ranked Warriors improved to 12-1 on the season. East Stroudsburg was ranked No. 1 in last week’s NFHCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Warriors, 11-0 at the time the poll was released, have several SOL alums on their roster, including Kocis, Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) and Carly Hughes (Souderton).
Sophomore Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) scored two goals and contributed her NCAA-best 21st assist of the year in Lebanon Valley’s 8-0 win over Arcadia on Saturday. The second-ranked Dutchmen improved to 14-0 overall (3-0 CC). Vasey also scored a goal in Lebanon Valley’s 4-3 win over Haverford on Thursday.
Jen Wrublesky (Neshaminy) scored a goal in St. Joe’s 3-2 overtime loss to Villanova on Wednesday. Wildcat goalie Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) had five saves in a winning effort.
Sophomore back Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored her second goal of the season in Cabrini’s 4-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday. Cabrini is 8-5 overall (5-1 CSAC). Freshman Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored Gwynedd-Mercy’s only goal.
Casey Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) contributed a goal and two assists in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 11-0 win over the College of Notre Dame on Wednesday. Teammate Nicolle Tourdot (Wissahickon) added a pair of assists.
Bloomsburg’s hockey team is ranked number four in the latest Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II poll. The Huskies, winners of four straight NCAA Division II national titles, are 7-2. SOL alums on Bloomsburg’s roster are Julia Rush (Quakertown), Madison Schoch (Quakertown), Samantha Facciolla (Council Rock South) and Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge.)
Kutztown’s hockey team is ranked fifth for the third consecutive week in the latest 2010 Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. SOL alums on Kutztown’s roster are Alexa Doyle (Neshaminy), Kelly McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham), and Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn). The Golden Bears are 5-4 overall, 2-2 PSAC East. McCartin assisted on a goal in Kutztown’s 3-1 win over Limestone College on Saturday. McCartin is one of KU’s top scorers this season with five goals.
Senior Megan Purcell (Pennridge) made 17 saves, including 10 in the second half, to help Widener overcome a 27-18 shot edge in the Pride’s 2-1 win over Cabrini on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Kevin Morton (Abington) tied his career high by throwing four touchdown passes in Kutztown’s 38-28 win over Millersville on Saturday. With the win, the Golden Bears tied a school record for wins in a season as their record improved to 7-0 overall (4-0 PSAC East). Morton finished with 350 yards on 29-of-42 passing. He also had 37 rushing yards on just seven carries. Morton threw a 39-yard TD pass to Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin). Morton has thrown at least one touchdown pass in the last 12 games. Defensively, Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) had seven tackles.
For his performance in Saturday’s win, Morton was named PSAC Eastern Division Football Offensive Player of the Week. In just a season and a half, he is already in third place on the Kutztown career touchdown pass list with 37. Morton leads the PSAC in total offense (305.9) and passing average (269.4). He is also second in passing efficiency (156.8). As a team, the Golden Bears lead the PSAC in scoring offense (39.3) and passing offense (269.4).
Freshman defensive back Mike Goode (Norristown) tied for the team lead with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, in Shippensburg’s 23-3 loss to No. 20 Bloomsburg on Saturday.
Senior T.J. Chiarolanza (William Tennent) nailed a 27-yard field goal in Lycoming’s 31-7 win over Widener on Saturday. The Warriors are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in MAC action.
Junior Mike Bergey (Souderton) blocked a field goal in East Stroudsburg’s 28-17 loss to C.W. Post on Saturday. Redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) had 12 tackles, including five solo tackles. He also had a two-yard run on a fake punt on fourth-and-two on a scoring drive that netted a field goal.
Bloomsburg is the 20th ranked football team in Division II, according to the latest national polls. This week, Bloomsburg (5-1, 3-0 PSAC East) made its season debut on both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) coaches poll and the D2football.com media poll, entering both surveys in the 20th position. SOL alums on Bloomsburg’s roster are Shaun Moore (North Penn), D. Solomon Oliver (Cheltenham) and Ryan Dickerson (Souderton)
GOLF
At Sunday’s PSAC championships, Millersville’s Matt Dudas (North Penn) shot a one-over-par 73, which moved the Marauders up a spot for a fourth-place finish.
LaSalle freshman Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named the Atlantic-10 Golf Rookie of the Week. Johnson made five birdies in the final round of the Big 5 Invitational and recorded 35’s on the front and back nine for an even par 70 to finish in a tie for 26th after shooting a 7-over, 147 (77-70). Counting a pair of birdies he made to finish the first round, Johnson played the final 20 holes two-under par. The 70 was the lowest score posted by an Explorer since John Lorenzo carded a school-record 68 to win the Rehoboth Beach Invitational on Sept. 26, 2006. The Hatboro alum also recorded a top-10 finish in leading LaSalle to the team title at the Swarthmore Invitational. His 7-over par, 78 was good for a seventh place finish out of 76 total participants.
MEN’S SOCCER
Alex Ruhfass (Council Rock North) served a long pass into the penalty box that connected with Michail Georgevic, whose shot found the net and propelled Bloomsburg to a 1-0 win over Goldey-Beacom on Saturday.
Freshman Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored his second goal of season in Bloomsburg’s 2-1 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper Kurt Pleier (Abington) played in the field for the first time this season and scored the lone goal for Millersville in its 3-1 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Maddy Evans (Abington) netted her first career game-winning goal in the 76th minutes of Penn State’s 2-1 upset of No. 16 Minnesota on Friday.
Sophomore keeper Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) had six saves in LaSalle’s 2-1 loss to Duquesne on Sunday. On Friday, she recorded at least seven saves to keep LaSalle in its 2-1 overtime win at St. Bonaventure.
Patty Squicciarini (North Penn) is a member of a Widener squad that moved up to No. 21 in the NSCAA national rankings this week. This comes two weeks after the Pride debuted in the poll for the first time in school history at No. 23. Widener remained at No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings.
Melissa Kornock (North Penn) paced IUP’s offense with four shots in the Crimson Hawks’ 1-0 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Teammate Ashley Moyer (Pennridge) took one shot.
Keeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) had six saves in Temple’s 1-0 double overtime loss to Xavier on Sunday, including a diving save of a shot off a corner. On Saturday, Murphy had five saves in Temple’s 3-0 loss to Dayton.
Kurtztown’s soccer team is ranked fourth in the first NCAA Division II poll of the 2010 season that was released on Wednesday. The Golden Bears (9-3-1 overall) are also ranked 23rd in the latest National Soccer coaches Association of America/HenderickCars.com Top 25 poll. SOL alums on Kutztown’s roster are Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy), Sam Moyer (Central Bucks West), Emily Froelich (Pennridge), Allie Riegel (Central Bucks West) and Caitlyn Schlupp (Council Rock South).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) was part of East Stroudsburg’s winning 800-meter free relay in the Millersville Relays on Saturday. She was also part of the 300 back relay that finished second and the 500 free relay that finished third.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) led East Stroudsburg with 17 kills, one solo block and six block assists in the Warriors’ 3-2 loss to Pace on Saturday. On Friday night, Stark had eight kills and seven digs in ESU’s 3-0 win over Cheyney.
Tori Beck (Quakertown) had 27 assists in Alvernia’s 3-2 win over Arcadia on Wednesday.
