2010 Football Fever (Vol. 7)

Council Rock North had not won a game all season, but the previously winless Indians (1-8, 1-5) administered a 36-18 hurtin’ on Bensalem (2-7, 2-4) to collect that first-ever victory for head coach Adam Collachi.

“I feel great for the kids,” said Collachi. “They have all worked so hard this year, and obviously, it has been a tough year.”

It was the first game all season that both future Big Ten players Brandon Cottom and John Raymon. Cottom – a running back - will attend Purdue while Raymon – a defensive end – will attend Iowa.

“With both Brandon and John in the lineup, it showed the type of team that we can be,” said Collachi. “It’s great to have them back, but I can’t be disappointed with the other players on this team.”

Council Rock South had not lost a game all season, but the previously unbeaten Golden Hawks (8-1, 5-1) were shot down by Abington (7-2, 5-1) – 45-35.

The Rock South defense had been impenetrable all season and had yielded only 42 points. And offensively, the Hawks had turned the ball over just once over the first eight games.

In the loss to Abington, CR South gave up the 45 points and turned the ball over four times.

Souderton has already started its playoff season as the Big Red came up with a huge 21-14 win over Central Bucks East (4-5, 3-3).

“I told the kids last week, and I will tell them again this week, that if we want to get into the playoffs we have to win the last two games of the season,” said Souderton head coach Ed Gallagher. “If we lost to CB East, their 6-4 is better than our 6-4 with the point system.

“Now we have to take care of business and beat Quakertown,” added Gallagher as the Indians travel to Panther Nation this Friday. “The way that I figured it out, we have already started our playoffs.”

Upper Dublin has a bye this week, but it won’t keep the Flying Cardinals from celebrating (7-2, 5-1).

Upper Dublin will have at the very least a share of the SOL American Conference crown with Cheltenham (8-1, 4-1). And if the Panthers would lose to Wissahickon (1-8, 1-4) the Cardinals would become outright champions.

“Our goal is always to win a conference championship,” said Upper Dublin head coach Bret Stover. “Our second goal is to get into the district playoffs - and our third goal is to get that first playoff win in school history.”

Ironically, Upper Dublin should benefit from the off week in its quest for the playoffs. The playoff slots are awarded to an average points accumulated over the course of the season.

“We feel good about our chances of getting into the playoffs,” said Stover. “We will have a normal week of practice, and we’ll see what giant we get to play in the playoffs.”

Suburban One National Conference

Abington (7-2, 5-1) put in its claim for a conference title with a stunning 45-35 victory over previously unbeaten Council Rock South (8-1, 5-1). A win this week would earn the Ghosts at least a share of the title for the first time since 1989.

Abington generated a staggering 435 yards of total offense against the highly regarded Golden Hawk defense. Ray Schreiner gained a game-high 130 yards, and quarterback Julien Ireland scored three touchdowns. The play of the season came in the fourth period on a 75-yard TD pass to Tim Salley from Jim Shelinsky on a faked punt.

William Tennent (4-5, 2-4) lost its fourth straight conference game when the Panthers fell to Neshaminy – 40-14.

The highlights for WT came from sophomore Camron Jenkins. Jenkins – who led the team with 60 yards rushing – scored on a 85-yard kick off return for the Panthers.

Neshaminy (8-1, 5-1) is back in the conference title hunt as the Redskins whipped William Tennent (4-5, 2-4) last week – 40-14. A win over rival Pennsbury will assure the Skins of at least a tie for the conference title.

Neshaminy quarterback Charlie Marterlla completed eight passes for 150 yards that included TD tosses to Shane Quinn, Dwight Williams, and Bobby Marterella. Anthony Woodroffe rushed for a game-high 150 yards and scored a touchdown.

Pennsbury (5-4, 3-3) kept its slim district playoff hopes alive with a 34-20 victory over Truman (2-7, 1-5). The Falcons must beat rival Neshaminy if it has any hopes of moving on into the postseason.
