MEN’S BASKETBALL
Nick Christian (Bensalem) scored 13 points, which included 6-of-8 from the foul line, in Philadelphia University’s 70-56 loss to LaSalle on Sunday. Teammates Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) and Jimmy Connolly (Souderton) both added seven points.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) is one 11 returning players on Lebanon Valley’s basketball squad that is picked to finished seventh in the Commonwealth Conference preseason men’s basketball coaches’ poll.
Senior guard Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) returns after averaging 2.2 assists per game last season for a Widener squad selected to finish third in the Commonwealth Conference.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Victoria Mazzeo (Neshaminy) is one of six new players on Chestnut Hill College’s roster.
Freshman Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) scored six points and pulled down one rebound in American University's 73-47 win over Indiana (Pa.). Teammate Liz Leer (Abington) contributed a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) was Penn State’s seventh finisher, placing 54th in last Sunday’s Big 10 Championships. The Nittany Lions finished fourth as a team.
Chestnut Hill College junior Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) finished 21st with a time of 30:20.92 in Sunday’s CACC Cross Country Championships. Marko Paparo (Abington) finished the race in a time of 40:44.49. Chestnut Hill finished ninth out of 10 teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Chestnut Hill College freshman Miranda Ward (Harry S. Truman) finished 12th with a time of 21:01.83 in Sunday’s CACC Cross Country Championships.
Millersville sophomore Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) finished 43rd with a time of 24:37 at Saturday’s PSAC Championships. Millersville finished fifth.
Freshman Martina Drew (Neshaminy) was the sixth Bloomsburg runner to cross the finish line at Saturday’s PSAC Championships, finishing with a time of 25:47. The Huskies finished seventh overall.
FIELD HOCKEY
University of Maryland senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) was named the ACC’s Offensive Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. She is the first field hockey student-athlete to earn the honor in all four years and is just the third student-athlete in any sport to be honored in four consecutive seasons. O’Donnell contributed two goals and two assists in top-ranked Maryland’s 5-2 win over second-ranked North Carolina in Sunday’s ACC title game. The Terrapins improved to 19-1 overall while capturing their ninth ACC crown. Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) is a starter for UNC, which downed Virginia 1-0 in Friday’s semifinal. In the other semifinal game, Maryland edged fifth-seeded Wake Forest 5-4 in double overtime. O’Donnell contributed a goal.
Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) scored a pair of second-half goals in eighth-ranked Penn State’s 4-0 win over Indiana in the opening round of the Big 10 Tournament on Thursday. Freshman Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in the first half. Longstreth earned first team All-Conference honors. She ranks second on the team with 35 points after collecting 15 assists and 10 goals. Teammate Jenny Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) was celebrated as the team’s Sportsmanship Award honoree. A leader on the team, she has started all 18 games during her senior season. She has two goals and an assist while anchoring the team’s midfield. A perennial member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad, Purvis has appeared in 66 games during her four-year stint at Penn State. The Nittany Lions fell to Michigan 4-3 in overtime in Friday’s semifinals.
Lebanon Valley’s Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) was a first team All-Commonwealth Conference selection. She leads NCAA Division III with 23 assists (a LVC single-season record) and also has 21 goals to rank fifth in the nation with 63 points. Vasey contributed a goal in Lebanon Valley’s 4-2 win over Elizabethtown in Wednesday’s Commonwealth Conference semifinal game. In Saturday’s title game, Vasey contributed an assist in Lebanon Valley’s 5-2 loss to Messiah.
Sophomore Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored the game winner in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 1-0 win over Keystone in Wednesday’s CSAC Tournament semifinal.
Cabrini sophomore back Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) helped anchor a defensive unit that silenced Gwynedd-Mercy in the Cavaliers’ 1-0 win in Saturday’s Colonial States Athletic Conference title game. The win vaulted the Cavaliers to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and for just the second time in program history.
Sophomore Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Rider’s 4-2 win over Quinnipiac on Friday. Rider went on to down Monmouth 1-0 on Saturday in the Northeast Conference championship game. Schneider was named to the NEC All-Tournament team.
Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 12-1 win over Mansfield on Saturday. The third-ranked Huskies improved to 14-2, 7-1 PSAC.
Senior midfielder Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in fourth-ranked East Stroudsburg’s 1-0 win at Slippery Rock on Sunday. The Warriors improved to 15-3 entering the final week of the regular season.
Saint Joseph senior Jen Wrublesky (Neshaminy) received Atlantic 10 All-Academic accolades. She contributed three goals and a pair of assists for eight points. She was named to the league’s All-Academic squad in 2009 as well and is a three-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad.
LaSalle sophomore Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference second team. Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Chylack led the Explorers with points (18) and was second with six goals. She was eighth in the conference in points and ninth in goals. In just two season, Chylack ranks 10th in points (43) at LaSalle.
Junior Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) scored a second-half goal in Kutztown’s 4-0 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
D’Andre Webb (Harry S. Truman) rushed for a team-high 140 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries in West Chester’s 45-14 win over Millersville on Saturday. Teammate Derek Dietz (William Tennent) had 52 yards on four carries. Jackson Fagan (Pennsbury) had a 36-yard touchdown catch and 18 yards on two carries. Placekicker Shawn Leo (Souderton) had a 43-yard field goal as well as six extra points. Troy Wasserleben (Upper Moreland) had four unassisted tackles and assisted on another. For Millersville, Jamie Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had three unassisted tackles and assisted on two others. West Chester is 4-6 overall, 4-3 PSAC East while Millersville fell to 2-8, 0-7 PSAC East.
Sophomore quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) finished with 302 passing yards and three touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough as Kutztown suffered its first defeat of the season when the Golden Bears fell to Bloomsburg 61-35 on Saturday. It was the 15th straight game in which Morton has fired at least one touchdown pass. He has 32 touchdown passes this season and has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 13 of KU’s last 14 games. Defensively, D. Solomon Oliver (Cheltenham) had a team-high six tackles for the Huskies while Kutztown’s Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had five unassisted tackles and assisted on three others. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) had one solo tackle and assisted on another.
Ursinus sophomore running back Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) returned to the lineup after suffering a broken hand and had 45 yards on 13 carries in the Bears’ 27-20 loss to Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Sophomore Brandon McManus (North Penn) recovered a fumble on a kickoff in Temple’s 28-10 win over Kent State on Saturday. He also kicked four extra points for the Owls (8-2, 5-1).
Redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) had 12 tackles in East Stroudsburg’s 20-17 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday to go over the 100-tackle mark for the third straight season and had his 23rd game with 10-plus tackles in 33 career starts. He has 106 tackles this season and extended his hold on the third spot in school history with 385 career stops. Teammate Mike Bergey (Souderton) had 11 tackles.
Freed has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team for the third straight season. A history major with a 3.74 GPA, Freed has attained nearly every major academic and athletic award in his career. He was a recipient of the PSAC Fall Top 10 Award recognizing five men’s and women’s fall sport student-athletes last year and was named a semifinalist for the William F. Campbell Award from the National Football Foundation last month. He is a two-time All-America selection by the voters of both the Daktronics Division II (sports information directors) and AP Little All-America programs. He was the Daktronics Super Region I Defensive Player of the Year last season and is a five-time PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week. Entering this past weekend’s action, Freed was second in the PSAC and tied for 12th in Division II in tackles per game with 10.4. He led the conference and was seventh nationally in solo tackles per game with 6.1.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ryan Richter (William Tennent) scored for the fourth time this weekend in the 76th minute to lead LaSalle to a 1-0 win over Dayton on Sunday. Richter got his 30th point of the season and his seventh game-winning goal in the team’s fourth win of the season. Jeff Pio (William Tennent) fed him a pass around the 25-yard mark, and Richter drilled a ground ball into the net from right to left. On Friday, Richter contributed the hat trick in LaSalle’s 3-0 win over Xavier. Pio contributed an assist. The Explorers have punched their ticket to next week’s 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship. Junoir Nick Dundon (Hatboro-Horsham) helps spearhead a defense that has posted seven shutouts.
Sophomore forward Matt MacWilliams (North Penn) contributed an assist in Temple’s 2-1 win over George Washington on Friday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Senior Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy) helped to anchor Kutztown’s defense in the Golden Bears’ 5-1 win over Edinboro on Tuesday in a PSAC quarterfinal match on Tuesday. The defense also played well in Kutztown’s 1-0 loss to California (Pa.) in Friday’s semifinal.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s 200-medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:37.63 in the Huskies’ 141-121 win over Edinboro on Saturday. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) finished second in the 100-breast with a time of 1:02.82.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Tori Hall (Council Rock North) was part of Bloomsburg’s 200-medley relay team that took first with a time of 1:51.80 in Saturday’s tri-meet at Edinboro. The Huskies defeated Edinboro 186.5-75.5 and Mansfield (222-2) but lost to Kutztown 133.5-128.5.
Sophomore Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200-medley relay team which finished with a time of 1:44.51 in Maryland’s 163-136 win over Duke earlier this season. She also was part of the winning 400 free relay (3:26.95). In Maryland’s 173-127 win over North Carolina State, Lafferty’s 200 medley relay won with a time of 1:45.42 and her 200 free relay also won with a time of 1:34.53.
Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) was part of East Stroudsburg’s second place 200-medley relay team in Saturday’s 159-103 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday. She finished third in the 200 free (2:04.87) and fourth in the 100 free (57.48). She was part of the fourth place 200-free relay (1:47.94).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) was one of four seniors honored before Friday night’s final match at East Stroudsburg. Stark had one kill in the Warriors’ 3-0 win over Cheyney to move into a tie for 10th in kills in a single season with 323. A two-time All-PSAC East selection, Stark was the Warriors’ top hitter in kills per game during all four years of her career. She closed out her career in fourth place all-time with 1,029 kills and eighth in blocks with 205. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Kutztown, Stark led ESU with nine kills and 10 digs.
WRESTLING
Senior Jesse Dunn (Harry S. Truman) enters his final season at East Stroudsburg as a back-up at 165 to Thad Frick. Dunn, according to ESU’s wrestling outlook, has been one of the Warriors’ hardest workers during his career. He has earned 26 starts in duals.
