WARMINSTER – The blood is always boiling whenever Upper Dublin and Wissahickon share the same ice.

And last night at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center was a classic example as Upper Dublin (4-3-0 SHSHL, 6-4-1 overall) edged Wissahickon (3-4-0 SHSHL – 5-7-0 overall) – 6-4.

The victory for the Flying Cardinals avenged a painful 4-3 loss to the Trojans on Thanksgiving Eve before a packed house at the BCISC.

“This is such a huge rivalry, and I hate to lose to anyone, said Wissahickon assistant captain Joey Sutkow. “It’s actually fun to play against those guys because I know a lot of them, but it’s much more fun when we can beat them.

“We just didn’t seem to come out with the intensity that we played with in that first game,” added Sutkow who scored two goals in that Trojan victory. “We have time to come back and win games, and by playoff time we should be ready.

Upper Dublin opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by defenseman Jonathan Bebey. The Cardinals added a second goal off the stick of Samuel Etskovitz to take a 2-0 lead.

“We seemed to get into the game right from the beginning,” said Bebey – who scored his first goal of the season for the Cardinals - and has contributed nine assists. “Wissahickon seemed a little flat, especially after the way that they played us in that Thanksgiving game.”

Wissahickon closed the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Luke Honorowski in the first period. The one-goal lead was to be the smallest lead that Upper Dublin would have to protect.

Etskovitz scored his second goal of the game before the close of the first period to extend the UD lead to 3-1.

Upper Dublin led 5-2 after the second period as Brian Markman scored a pair of goals for the winners. Markman leads the SHSHL American Division in scoring this season 30 points.

David Pataki found the back of the net for the Trojans. It was his second goal of the season.

Wissahickon outscored the Flying Cardinals 2-1 in the third period to make the score final at 6-4.

Goal scorers for the Trojans were Sutkow and Sean Dickson, while Etskovitz completed his hat trick for the Cardinals.

“We felt that we were in control for most of the game,” said Upper Dublin assistant coach Mike Decristofano. “We played our game tonight – no dumb stuff.

“We wanted to come out and just play hockey,” added Decristofano who made the calls behind the bench for the absent Dave Japchen. “And we did that.”

The subplot for any Upper Dublin game is the continued maturation of goaltender Jack Deragon. Deragon literally had no ice hockey experience in the net and has continued his impressive progress.

“There were times when I was afraid to let any shot get on goal,” said Bebey. “From where he started, to where he is right now, is amazing.

“If we want to go anywhere in the playoffs, he is going to have to be a big part of it,” added Bebey. “But it is always a team game. We will always win as a team, and lose as a team.”

Whether the blood is boiling or not.
