MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple’s basketball game on Sunday against Akron was declared ‘Allen’s Town’ game in honor of Temple Athletics’ ‘Allen’s Town’ campaign, which supports men’s basketball All-America candidate Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury). Anyone with the first or last name of ‘Allen’ or ‘Alan’ received group pricing. A Naismith and Wooden Award candidate, Allen earned Atlantic 10 Conference co-player of the Week honors last Monday after posting identical 13-point, 10-rebound games in road wins over Central Michigan (65-53) and Maryland (64-61). They were his first double-doubles of the season and 29th of his career. Allen scored four points in Temple’s 82-47 rout of Akron on Sunday while teammate Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) contributed nine points and four rebounds.
Freshman Tim Filer (Council Rock North) contributed a clutch three-pointer in Lebanon Valley’s 76-75 overtime win over Moravian on Saturday. In Lebanon Valley’s 89-72 win over Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday, Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed six points, two rebounds and three steals while Filer had five points and three rebounds.
Lavail Owens (Wissahickon) scored four points in Mansfield’s 75-72 win over Mercyhurst on Monday.
Matt Labick (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored four points and contributed a steal off the bench in East Stroudsburg’s 70-50 win over Lock Haven on Wednesday.
Junior guard Dan Delconte (Wissahickon) contributed 21 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 86-82 win over Rowan in the championship game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday. Delconte was named to the all-tournament team.
Senior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) scored 15 points in Widener’s 70-69 loss to Immaculata on Wednesday.
Sophomore guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored a season-high 24 points while also pulling down five rebounds and dishing out three assists in Philadelphia University’s 74-71 win over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday. Sophomore Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) tallied seven points and five assists while freshman Nick Christian (Bensalem) finished with six points and four rebounds.
Freshman A.J. Picard (Souderton) was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line and scored nine points while also grabbing three rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 89-60 win over Wilmington on Tuesday night.
Bryan Harrity (Central Bucks South) contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds in Elizabethtown’s 92-87 win over Susquehanna on Saturday. In last Saturday’s 79-61 win over Arcadia, Harrity had seven points and four rebounds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Mercedes Harris (Norristown) scored 32 points to lead Montgomery County Community College to a 77-65 come-from-behind win over Luzerne Community College on Saturday. Last Monday, Harris had 26 points and 16 rebounds in Montco's 64-47 win over Gloucester County College on Monday. In Wednesday’s 69-11 win over Community College of Philadelphia, Harris finished with a team-high 19 points.
Junior Nicole Pender (Cheltenham) contributed 10 points, five steals and five assists in Mansfield’s 72-65 loss to Central State on Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman), usually charged with defending the opposing team’s best backcourt player, is a defensive catalyst for her Goldey-Beacom squad. She averages 22.7 minutes per game and scored a season and team-high 12 points in Tuesday’s 65-46 win over Wilmington. In Saturday’s 63-49 win over Chestnut Hill, Rosario contributed nine points and two steals.
Brittney Gunn (Cheltenham) scored a game-high 11 points in Millersville’s 68-47 win over Lincoln on Sunday. Sophia Waters (Norristown) added 10 points while Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) had two points and four assists. In Thursday’s 68-62 loss to the University of the Sciences, Newman scored 18 points while Waters added a season-high 11. Newman – who also had seven rebounds and seven steals - scored 16 of her points in the second half and also added four steals and six rebounds in the second half alone.
Sophomore Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored six points in Bloomsburg’s 79-48 win over Clarion on Saturday, In Bloomsburg’s 78-31 rout of Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Derr had four points.
Heather McHugh (Norristown) knocked down three three-pointers and scored nine points in Lock Haven’s 71-55 win over Penn State Beaver. Teammate Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) added eight points off the bench.
Teanna Ziegler (Souderton) scored eight points in Elizabethtown’s 69-65 win over Moravian on Tuesday night.
Taylor Magnus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored five points and handed out three assists in Philadelphia University’s 66-57 win over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday night.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) contributed four points, four assists, two blocks and one steal in American’s 57-41 win over Youngstown State last Saturday.
Senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) contributed five points and three assists in Princeton’s 87-45 win over Rider last Sunday. Micir is averaging 12.6 points per game and has hit 23 three-pointers this season. She is shooting 100 percent from the foul line.
Senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) scored a season-high 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Swarthmore’s 80-73 win over Washington College on Wednesday. Stockbower was 10-for-22 from the field while recording her 70th career double-double, leaving her only nine shy of the NCAA Division III record. Madeline Ross (Central Bucks East) contributed a key three-point basket.
FIELD HOCKEY
East Stourdsburg senior Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) was named to the second team of the NFHCA Division II All-American team. She is the third member of her family to earn All-America recognition for ESU in the last seven seasons. She had seven goals and tied for the school record with 14 assists to join her sisters Nicole, who was on the second team in 2004, and Ashley, who was the national Player of the Year in 2006. Brittany finished her four-year career with 22 goals and 22 assists and ranks fourth in career assists at ESU.
Penn State junior Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) received third team All-American honors. She led the team and stood third in the league with 15 assists. A starter in all 20 games, she averages 0.75 assists per contest, which was ranked 12th in the country. A multi-faceted contributor, she was one of only five players in the nation with at least 10 goals and 15 assists. She also capitalized on all six of her penalty stroke attempts. Overall, Penn State went 11-1 during games in which she recorded a point.
University of Maryland senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) was named the 2010 NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year. She also was named National Player of the Year and Offensive MVP by womensfieldhockey.com. O’Donnell led the nation in assists per game in 2010 with an average of 1.33 as well as in points per game with an average of 4.08. She is the only player in NCAA history to break the 100 career assist and the 300 career point marks. On Thursday, O’Donnell was named the winner of the 2011 Honda Sports Award in field hockey, designating her the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. The honor, which O’Donnell also received in 2010, was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program.
FOOTBALL
East Stroudsburg University All-American linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) has been selected to participate in the 2011 Cactus Bowl, which will be held on Jan. 7 at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Freed is the ninth ESU player who has been selected to play in Division II’s senior all-star game since it was introduced in 1994 and will be one of 88 players from across Division II who will compete at Javelina Stadium. Freed’s 399 career tackles, 45 tackles for a loss and 22.5 sacks helped him carve out a reputation as one of the top defensive players in Division II football over the past four seasons.Freshman running back Myron Myles (formerly Ross) (Wissahickon) was named one of two scout team players of the year at Temple’s annual football banquet on Saturday night.
Sophomore quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) threw four touchdown passes in Kutztown's 41-34 loss to Shepherd University in a NCAA Division II second round playoff contest on Nov. 27, establishing a single-season mark in that category. Morton finished with 352 passing yards, the sixth time this year he finished with 300 or more yards in the air. Morton ended the year with 38 touchdown passes. Morton was named to the Daktronics, Inc. Super Region I second team. He established single-season school records with 38 touchdown passes and 3,633 passing yards. Morton has thrown at least one TD pass in 17 straight games. He led the PSAC in passing offense (302.8) and total offense (324.5). Morton, the Offensive Player of the Year, is the first Kutztown athlete to earn a PSAC postseason award since 2005. He was the first Kutztown Offensive Player of the Year since Mike deMarteleire in 2000.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Kutztown’s Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy) was named to the third team 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Women’s NCAA Division II All-America Team. This season Deeter was named to the first team all-PSAC Eastern Division team for the fourth straight year. She also was named to the first team NSCAA Atlantic Region, Daktronics All-Atlantic Region first team and Daktronics' Inc. All-American honorable mention squad. Deeter has been part of the one of the most successful eras in Kutztown women's soccer history. During her career, the Golden Bears have won 29 matches over the last two years, qualified for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament in consecutive seasons, participated in a PSAC championship contest and spent 18 consecutive weeks in the national rankings. This past season, Kutztown was 14-6-2 overall. Deeter helped Kutztown record 11 shutouts this season. During her career, Deeter helped lead Kutztown to 37 shutouts. She was part of a defensive unit that set a school record for shutouts in 2009 with 13. Kutztown's season ended with a 2-0 loss to Bloomsburg University in the NCAA tournament. MEN’S SWIMMING
Widener junior Sean Corcoran (Pennsbury) was part of the men’s 400-yard medley relay team that finished first with a time of 3:47.45 in Saturday’s 101-95 win at Washington (MD).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) finished first in the 50 free with a time of 26.19 seconds in Millersville’s 147-58 win over Elizabethtown on Thursday. She finished second in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 1:05.30. Teammate Victoria DeTample (Pennsbury) finished second in the 200 free with a time of 2:04.81. She finished fourth in the 500 free with a time of 6:03.96 while Katelyn Brenner (Norristown) finished fifth with a time of 6:14.82.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener freshman Mick Coleman (William Tennent) continued his solid freshman campaign by taking second in the pole vault at 4.25 meters in Saturday’s Haverford Holiday Meet. Sophomore Darcela Llanos (Abington) was sixth in the 200-meter dash in 28.18 seconds.
Millersville’s Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and eighth in the 60-meter dash at Saturday’s Lehigh Invitational. Teammate Zac Kohler (Pennridge) took fourth place in the high jump (1.78 meters).
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Lock Haven’s Christy Ohmott (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third overall in pole vault with a mark of 11-1.75 in Kent State University’s Golden Flash Gala this weekend. Teammate Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) just missed a NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw, finishing 10th with a toss of 52-07.25.
Millersville senior Jess Rhyner (Quakertown) took third in the high jump (1.50 meters) and fifth in the long jump (5.20 meters) at the Lehigh Invitational.
WRESTLING
Freshman James Vollrath (Council Rock South) made his Penn State dual meet debut on Sunday up a weight at 165 and won by forfeit as Lock Haven did not weigh in anyone at 165.
