2010 SOL Girls' BB Wrap 12-18-10

Upper Merion 57, Owen J. Roberts 42

The Wildcats boasted a front line that measured in at 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, but the Vikings weren’t about to let a little thing like a decided height advantage by their opponent stand in the way of a big win.
Junior Cassidy Koenig jump started the Vikings by burying five three-pointers in the first half, propelling Upper Merion to a 32-20 halftime lead. Koenig – who sat the entire third quarter with foul trouble - finished with 17 points while sophomore Kristina O’Sullivan led all scorers with 20 points. Senior Jamie Mazzi added 10 points for the Vikings.
The win came on the heels of a setback to Norristown one night earlier.
“I think it’s the mark of a young team,” Upper Merion coach Tom Schurtz said. “You go out last night, and Norristown had a lot to play for – their coach (Ashlee Harrison) went into labor, so they were obviously very motivated to play well, and we didn’t match their early intensity.
“Tonight we walk in the gym where we’re obviously diminutive compared to the team we’re playing, and we came out ready to play.
“That’s what you’re going to get when you start a freshman, a sophomore and two juniors and you bring a freshman and sophomore off the bench. We only play one senior, so you’re going to get nights when they’re focused and energetic, and you’re going to get nights where they’re not.
“I tell our girls – I like our chances every game when we go out and play well. You put two of the best players on the floor every night, and you’re going to give yourself a chance. You hope to get better every night. Tonight was a huge step forward.”

Sajanna Bethea turned in a monster performance for the Falcons, contributing 17 points and 18 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Villa in a non-league battle.
