MEN’S BASKETBALL
Philadelphia University sophomore Jim Connolly (Souderton) received CACC Honorable Mention recognition for the week ending Dec. 14. Connolly had a season-high 24 points in a 74-71 win over Chestnut Hill. He also had five rebounds and three assists. He is averaging a team-high 16 points a game, along with shooting 93 percent from the free throw line. Connolly scored 11 points in Philadelphia University’s 75-56 loss to Wilmington on Sunday.
Senior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) scored 22 points in Temple’s 84-74 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday. He also had seven rebounds and three assists. The win was the fifth in a row for the Owls, who improved to 8-2.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) led all scorers with 25 points in La Salle’s 78-58 win over Rider on Sunday. The Cheltenham alum connected on 5-of-12 shots from three-point range and came just two shy of her career high of 27. She added a game-high five steals, a block and an assist.
Freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored six points in Lock Haven’s 71-58 win over Chestnut Hill on Sunday. Teammate Heather McHugh (Norristown) contributed four assists and two steals. Lock Haven upped its record to 5-1.
Senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 45 seconds of Princeton’s 64-52 win over Drexel on Friday. She finished the game with 18 points and also had a team-high six rebounds.
Swarthmore senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 12. Stockbower scored a season-high 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the Garnet’s 80-73 win over Washington College. The double-double was the 70th of her career, placing her nine shy of tying the NCAA Division III and Centennial Conference record of 79. Stockbower is in second place all-time with 1,118 career rebounds and fifth place all-time with 1,440 career points. The Player of the Week honor is the fifth of Stockbower’s career. Swarthmore is 6-2 overall, 4-1 CC, heading into the winter break.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) scored 13 points in American University’s 64-60 win over George Washington on Sunday afternoon.
Senior guard Jaclyn Hilf (Upper Dublin) scored eight points in Ursinus College’s 44-33 win over Dickinson last Saturday.
Freshman Brittany Sandone (Souderton) scored a season-high 16 points in Cabrini’s 53-52 loss to the University of the Sacred Heart in a game played in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday. On Wednesday, Sandone scored six points in Cabrini’s 63-39 loss to the University of Scranton.
Senior Lindsey Tennett (Pennridge) is averaging 8.4 points a game and 7.0 rebounds for a Holy Family squad that is ranked 15th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top-25 Coaches’ Poll released on Dec. 15. Holy Family is 5-2 overall, 2-0 CACC.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown’s Matt Seeley (Souderton) was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll. The honor roll is comprised of student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participate in a varsity level sport and registered a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher.
FIELD HOCKEY
Elizabethtown’s Steph Smith (Abington) was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll. The honor roll is comprised of student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participate in a varsity level sport and registered a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher.
FOOTBALL
James Frannklin (Neshaminy) was named the head football coach at Vanderbilt University. The former East Stroudsburg University quarterback was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland for the last three seasons. Franklin replaces Robbie Caldwell, who resigned Nov. 27. Vanderbilt is coming off consecutive 2-10 seasons. The Commodores went 7-6 in 2008 for their first winning season since 1982. Franklin was ESU’s starting quarterback in 1993 and 1994. During his senior season in 1994, he was a regional candidate for the Harlon Hill Award given to the top player in Division II. He was sixth in the nation in total offense with 312.9 yards per game, throwing for 2,586 yards and 14 touchdowns and running for 543 yards and seven scores. The Warriors averaged a then-record 464.8 yards per game. Franklin earned a bachelor degree in psychology from ESU in 1995 and a master’s in Educational Leadership from Washington State in 1999. Franklin is regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters and helped the Terrapins sign 10 four-star recruits in the past two classes. He also has a history of developing outstanding talent. Franklin spent the 2006-07 season as the offensive coordinator for Kansas State, helping the Wildcats achieve their first winning season in four years. Franklin spent the 2005 season as the Green Bay Packers’ wide receivers coach under head coach Mike Sherman.
East Stroudsburg outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) was named to the Associated Press Little All-America third team for the third straight season, becoming the first ESU to earn three career AP Little All-America honors. The redshirt senior had 120 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks in his final season for the Warriors and was the only defensive player among the 24 candidates for the Harlon Hill Award, which is given to the top player in Division II.
MEN’S SOCCER
La Salle senior Ryan Richter (William Tennent) was named to NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team. Richter led the Atlantic 10 with 30 points on 14 goals and two assists and was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year. Seven of his 14 goals were game winners, including two in the final weekend of the regular season that clinched not only a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship but also the No. 2 seed and a bye in the tournament.
La Salle junior Nick Dundon (Hatboro-Horsham) earned NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Third Team honors. Dundon spearheaded the Explorer defense to eight shutouts this season. The Explorers had three straight shutouts, including the final two games of the regular season that pushed the team to the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship as well as the Explorers’ semifinal win over 2009 defending champion Saint Louis. The junior biology major is also a standout in the classroom, boasting a 3.95 grade point average. He was honored as a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team selection.
WRESTLING
Senior Jesse Dunn (Harry S. Truman) earned a major decision (14-0) over James Bennett in East Stroudsburg’s sweep at the Mercyhurst Quad on Saturday. He also pinned Austin Roland.
