HATFIELD – North Penn went to the drawing board to devise a set play off a face off late in the third period of its game with feisty Council Rock North.

The game was deadlocked at 3-3 when NP’s Daniel Corrado won the draw – Knight captain Jim McKelvie wheeled and fed David Heggan – and Heggan scored what proved to be the game winner with 2:49 left in the game.

North Penn (5-4-3 SHSHL, 6-4-3 overall) scored an empty net goal to claim a 5-3 SHSHL victory over Rock North (3-7-2, 3-8-2) at Hatfield Ice.

“The play was a designed play that we use,” said McKelvie. “We got the draw, I got it to David, and he made a nice backhand to score the goal.

“We battled hard the whole game, it didn’t come easy,” added McKelvie. “We took a lot of quality shots. We scored more than they did, and that’s really all that counts.”

“No question that was the crucial play of the game,” said North Penn head coach Kevin Vaitis. “Jim McKelvie is the best player on our team, and he gets the puck to his teammates in good scoring positions.”

“We tried to make a line change to match up with McKelvie on that draw,” said Council Rock North head coach Eric Tye. “But the refs said we were too late. It really bit us in the butt.”

Council Rock North was a pain in the butt to the Knights for the entire game.

“We feel that we are the better team, and we would have been disappointed if we didn’t come away with two points,” said Vaitis. “We tied them the first time we played (3-3), and they just got after us.”

After a scoreless first period, North Penn scored the first goal with 4:11 left in the second period. Corrado put the puck in the net on assists from Heggan and McKelvie.

The Knights extended the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Ryan Merk at the 3:09 mark of the second period. Doug Barber and Chris Rowland had assists for North Penn.

Council Rock North sliced the lead to 2-1 by the close of the second period. Mike Shander scored with 0:59 remaining on assists from Alec Greenhalgh and Sam Kroh.

North Penn regained a two-goal lead at 3-1 when McKelvie scored an unassisted goal with 11:38 left in the game.

Rock North, though, refused to go away and scored the next two goals to forge the 3-3 tie.

Jim McKensie scored for the Indians on assists from Mark Dwyer and Griffin Healy, and Bobby Dumont knotted the score with 7:28 left in the contest with a goal on assists from Harrison Pitts and McKensie.

North Penn closed out the win with the two late scores – from Heggan and the empty netter by Ted Stoler.

“We need to be able to bury teams when we have them down,” said Vaitis. “But we didn’t do that tonight.”

“I told them after the game that I loved the way we didn’t quit,” said Tye. “The key to our season is gaining experience, and it is starting to become obvious that we are getting better.

“Our goal right now is to make the Suburban playoffs,” added Tye. “We really think that is going to happen.”
