SOL Teams Compete in Jameer Nelson Classic

GWYNEDD MERCY COLLEGE - The only thing that Council Rock North junior guard Aaron Morgan did wrong after the Indians victory over St. Joseph’s Prep was to break his MVP trophy racing toward the Indian locker room.

Council Rock North (6-1) rolled to a 57-43 victory over the Prep (5-3) as part of the Jameer/Pete Nelson Classic.

“I guess I should be more careful,” smiled Morgan of the damaged hardware. “I hope that I can get it fixed.”

Morgan earned the prize with a glorious 17-point, 10-assist performance against the Hawks. He was terrific from the opening minute to the final one.

“Aaron is a three year varsity starter, and there is little that he hasn’t experienced on the floor,” said Council Rock North head coach Derek Wright. “He is a player that has matured through hard work, and he is a player that wants the ball in his hands during critical times of the game.

“We got off to the good start, but they played harder than us and got back into the game,” added Wright. “We went back to our game plan, and we played a very good fourth quarter.”

The Hawks got as close as four points in the second half (42-38), but Rock North put the defensive clamps on Prep for the remainder of the game.

In fact, St. Joe Prep had more turnovers (eight) than points (five) in the crucial last period.

“We wanted to chase them off the three-point line,” said Wright. “And we wanted to get the ball into the paint offensively.”

The ‘painters’ for the Indians were Arron Goodman and Charlie Anastasi. Goodman scored a game-high 18 points, while Anastasi scored in double digits with 13 points.

“We wanted to use our size to score points in the second half,” said Morgan who delivered some effective passes to the Rock North inside players. “We looked for open shots the entire game.

“Playing in this showcase game is great for our team,” added Morgan. “It gives players a lot of exposure, and it is great to play in front of some bigger crowds.”

“We are learning to be comfortable in any setting,” said Wright. “We want to show that we are a balanced team, and teams will not be able to focus on any one player. I think we did that tonight.”

Maybe Morgan really didn’t want that MVP trophy.

**Eagles Lose First **

Norristown (8-1) lost its first game of the season when the Eagles lost a 67-58 contest to powerful Chester (6-1) in the finale of the Jameer/Pete Nelson Classic at Gwynedd Mercy College.

“We will come out of this game knowing what we have to do to become a better basketball team,” said Norristown head coach Michael Evans. “We found out that we still have a lot of work to do – box out, make better passes, shoot better from the foul line.”

Norristown played the Clippers on even terms for most of the first half and trailed Chester by just 34-30 at the close of the second period.

The next eight minutes, though, were painful to watch as the Eagles managed just a single point the first seven minutes of the period and scored seven points in all.

“The third period was the difference in the game,” said Evans. “We didn’t want a track meet with them, but we got into one. Chester is not a team that you can just come back on.”

Senior Maleek Williams led the Eagles with 17 points and was awarded the MVP trophy. Aaron Webb scored in double digits with 13 points, while Tyreese White scored 11 points.

“We go back home and practice,” added Evans as the Eagles resume Suburban One League American Conference play against Upper Moreland. “We have some work to do.”
