2011 Rink 'Rap (Vol. 6)

By Scott Huff

Upper Dublin (6-3, 12 SHSHL American Division) moved into the division penthouse with a 9-7 victory over Lansdale Catholic (5-3, 10).

And the Flying Cardinal ‘moving man’ was senior Brian Markman who scored a staggering seven goals to fuel the come from behind victory.

“To be honest, it really didn’t dawn on me that he scored seven goals,” said Upper Dublin head coach Dave Japchen. “The craziest thing about it is that he doesn’t score goals by dominating the puck. He is just a talented player that has a great knack of scoring goals.

“Brian really shouldn’t be playing high school ice hockey – he is that good,” added Japchen. “He has a tremendous ability to be able to look up while he is skating, and he can pick his spots with his shots on goal.”

Upper Dublin needed every one of Markman’s goals in the win over Lansdale Catholic. In fact, the Cardinals trailed LC 5-4 going into the final period.

“I was not very happy with the way that we played in front of our goaltender,” said Japchen. “This team was coming back from a week off, and we fell back into some bad habits.

“We scored five goals in that third period,” continued Japchen. “And (goalie) Jack Deragon came up with some good saves in that period.”

In a twist to the SHSHL American Division schedule, Upper Dublin will not play another division game until Feb. 4, 2011, when the Cardinals meet Upper Moreland. UD closes the regular season against Wissahickon and Hatboro-Horsham the following week.

“We play four non-league games before the end of the (division) season,” said Japchen. “Our goal is to continue to improve.”

Does that mean Brian Markman will score eight goals in the next game?

SHSHL National Division

Pennsbury (6-6-1, 13) proved it could play with the best of them in a 3-2 SHSHL National Division loss to unbeaten Council Rock South (13-0-1, 27).

“The kids now believe that we can play with anyone,” said Pennsbury head coach John Bria. “We came so close, and we actually had a good shot at beating them.

“We got to play them at the beginning of the year, and for whatever reason we’re not ready,” said Bria in reference to the Falcons 7-3 loss to the Golden Hawks back in early November. “We came into this game with a better game plan.”

Pennsbury had a fine goaltending outing by Benjamin Herring in the setback to Rock South. Herring had 27 saves for the Falcons, while William Richards and Luke Matthews scored goals for PHS.

Pennsbury tuned up for the CR South game with a 7-3 SHSHL victory over Central Bucks South (6-5-2, 14).

Ken McCormick supplied the offensive firepower in the win over the Titans with four goals and two assists. Richards scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, while Nick Egan scored a single goal.

Ken Kandetzke was in goal for Pennsbury and had 17 saves.

“Playoff time is coming up, and we are playing our best hockey,” said Bria. “Things are coming together.”

SHSHL Continental Division

Pennridge (4-9-1, 9 SHSHL) is on the outside looking in for a SHSHL Class AA playoff position. The Rams trail Council Rock North (4-7-2, 10) for the eighth and final playoff position.

“I expect that this team is going to finish strong,” said Pennridge head coach Dave Lewis. “We expect that we can beat both North Penn (6-4-3, 15) and Souderton (2-8-2, 6) in the next two games, and that should put us in a much better position.

“This is a team that has had to correct some bad habits,” added Lewis. “We have dominated some teams on the ice, but we lost the games. We have to learn to stay focused and play with intensity the entire game.”

Pennridge moved a step closer to playoff contention with a 7-3 win over Central Bucks West (1-10-0, 2).

The Rams have received fine contributions from leading scorer Matt Brown, Justin Roberts, Kyle Henofer, Derek Wilson, and Richard Thorton this season.

“Matt can be a dynamic player,” said Lewis. “And the others are good two-way players.”

Right now the Rams are still on the outside looking in – stay tuned.
