There is not a drop of disappointment in the voice of Upper Moreland head coach Jim Stampler in reference to his team’s performance in the 2010-2011 Suburban High School Hockey League season.The Golden Bears (0-9-1 SHSHL, 2-12-2 overall) should really be called the Bear Cubs as the core of the team is filled with sophomores and freshmen.
“We have young players that are going to be very good in a year or two,” said Stampler. “One goal that I have as a new coach is to keep them together for the next two years. We are going to be very good.”
Not that this season has been a throw away.
In fact, Upper Moreland is going to have its impact on the SHSHL American Division season as the Bears forged a 4-4 tie with first place Hatboro-Horsham (7-2-1).
“We had them on the ropes, and we really should have beaten them,” said Stampler. “They scored a goal really late in the game on a power play (off the stick of the Hatters Tim Boyle with 14 seconds left).
“This team has made a lot of progress since the beginning of the season,” added Stampler. “We have our best ice hockey in front of us.”
Upper Moreland sophomore goaltender Jared Burch is a source of great enthusiasm for Coach Stampler.
“I saw (William Tennent standout goaltender) Eric HorroX as a sophomore, and Jared isn’t too far off what Eric was like back then,” said Stampler. “And there is no question that HorroX is the best goalie around now.”
Stampler is also confident that the development of his other underclassmen will continue.
The sophomore class boasts UM leading scorer Matt Baumgardner, Joshua Barber, and Kyle Landis. Colton Arizini and Matthew Beck are gaining valuable ice time as talented freshman.
“Baumgarder is a very smart player who likes to drive on the net for tip in’s and rebounds,” said Stampler. “And he is one of our faster skaters.”

The Bucks (2-14-0 SHSHL, 2-16-0 overall) should be really called the young Bucks as the roster is filled with 10 freshmen and sophomores.
“Progress can be made without counting wins and losses,” said Central Bucks West head coach Dave Baun. “We go out on the ice every single game with the idea of winning the game, but to be realistic we have to accept some of the losing.
“The last few games, we have been outshooting teams, and that is a very positive sign,” added Baun. “We have been working on a new system, and it seems to be working.”
The biggest improvement during the course of the season for the Bucks might be the development of freshman goal tender Justin Angelo.
“We got goalie coach Ed Kallatch out of retirement to work with Justin,” said Baun, “And his progress from the beginning of the season to now has been astounding. He is a legitimate goaltender now.”
CB West won its last SHSHL game when the Bucks edged Souderton – 4-3 – on a goal scored by Johnny Taylor late in the game.
“Johnny Taylor is an outstanding player,” said Baun of his junior forward. “He is a great team leader, and he is someone who is going to help us out next season.”
The team leader in scoring is sophomore Austin Siemion, while freshman Nick Moffett has also played well this season.
“I believe that we are going to win every single game the rest of the season,” said Baun.
And there wasn’t a drop of disappointment in his voice.
The Week That Was in the SHSHL

Council Rock South (15-0-1, 31) featured a balanced scoring attack, as the Golden Hawks remained unbeaten in National Division play with a 4-1 victory over William Tennent (6-9-2, 14).
The goal scorers for the Golden Hawks were Dan Ufberg, Patrick Grilli, Thomas Kopania, and Greg Aquaro.
The lone goal scorer for the Panthers was Cameron Goodell.

Central Bucks East (14-3-0, 28) remained on top of the Continental Division with a 5-1 victory over Pennridge (4-12-1, 9).
The Patriots had five players find the back of the net. Austin Baty, Vince Esposito, Mike Palmer, Dean Albertini, and Nick Patullo all tallied single goals for East.
The lone goal scorer of the Rams was Justin Roberts.

Central Bucks West (2-14-0, 4) topped Souderton (3-11-2, 8) by a 4-3 score in a SHSHL Continental Division contest.
Johnny Taylor – who scored a pair of goals – scored the game winner with 2:33 left in the third period. Nick Moffett and Tyler Delaney also scored goals for the winners.
Souderton had three players score single goals as Anthony Mcphee, Sean Walsh, and Rodney Anders all scored for the Big Red.

Central Bucks South (9-5-2, 20) hammered North Penn (7-5-4, 18) by a 9-2 score in a key SHSHL Continental Division contest.
Tom Dougherty scored a hat trick for the Titans, while Connor Bechtel scored a pair of goals for the winners. Nick Delaurentis, Jimmy Milanesi, Dominic Decenso, and Brett Roberts all scored solo goals for CBS.
Dave Heggan and Caleb Witzaney scored North Penn goals.

Lansdale Catholic (7-4-0, 14) kept within striking distance of the top of the SHSHL American Division standings with a 3-1 victory over Hatboro-Horsham (7-3-1, 15).
The Crusaders had three single goal scorers in Anthony Valerio, Nick Sette, and Andrew Hart.
The lone goal scorer for Hatboro-Horsham was Tim Boyle.

Council Rock North (6-9-2, 14) erupted for seven goals as the Indians topped the Big Red of Souderton (3-11-2, 8) – 7-1.
AJ Garbowski scored the hat trick to fuel the Rock North offense, while Griffen Healy scored a pair of goals. Bobby Dumont – who had four assists – and Tim Kroh each scored single goals for the winners.
