The Panthers celebrated Senior Night in style on Tuesday night by picking up their biggest win of the season. They threw some serious defense at the Ghosts, limiting them to just six first-half points en route to a 22-6 halftime lead.
“We packed it in and dared them to shoot the ball,” coach Paul Veltre said. “We played a two-three zone most of the game,
“We tried to contain (Aiyannah) Peal and focused on getting out on (Jamie) Schectman and (Jessica) Schmidt) on the outside and rebounded the ball. It worked. We started our seniors, and it looked very good.”
Ashley Alden led the Panthers with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Melissa Horn had 13 rebounds to go along with five points, and Veltre also lauded the effort of point guard Alison Malatesta.
“She really controlled the tempo of the game and knocked down some free throws for us,” the Panthers’ coach said.
For Abington, Peal finished the game with just two points while Schectman and Schmidt led the Ghosts with six points each.
“They got some shots off, but nothing fell for them,” said Veltre, whose team led 11-4 at the end of one quarter. “We limited them to one shot.
“One shot and they were done, and once we had the lead, we didn’t really score that much. We were pretty much trying to get the clock to run down. We only took wide open looks in the second half.”
The game marked the return to the Ghosts’ lineup of senior point guard Chynna West, who was sidelined with a concussion. West and Peal both found themselves in early foul trouble. Peal eventually fouled out.
For the Panthers, the win came on the heels of a 32-26 loss to Neshaminy on Friday and avenged an early-season 54-37 loss to this same Ghost squad.
“It’s a huge win for us coming off that devastating loss on Friday,” Veltre said. “It’s great momentum. They’re pretty confident and ready to finish this week and find out Sunday morning what our seeding is.
“They’re pumped, and we’re hoping for a home game for the first time since I’ve been here.”
Council Rock North 68, Bensalem 39
Devin Gold reached a personal milestone on Tuesday night when she surpassed the 1,000-point plateau at the 4:41 mark of the fourth quarter when she buried a foul shot. Gold led all scorers with 21 points while her sister, Lauren Gold, added 15.
Ashleigh Spence led the Owls with 18 points.
Council Rock South 65, Pennsbury 44
Alex Wheatley scored a career-high 33 points to go along with 16 rebounds and five steals in yet another brilliant individual effort. Wheatley had 14 first-quarter points as the Golden Hawks opened up a 21-15 lead. The Falcons rallied to make things interesting, outscoring the Golden Hawks 16-14 in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing by just four (35-31).
The Golden Hawks closed the game with a 30-13 second-half surge.
Alexis Hofstaedter added nine points and seven assists for the Golden Hawks. Lindsay Bolger led the Falcons with 11 points while freshman Sajanna Bathea added 10 points.
Neshaminy 51, Harry S. Truman 21
Jade Kent and Shannon Barlow led a balanced attack for the Redskins, scoring 10 and nine points respectively. Kent also had 11 rebounds. Alicia Kucey scored seven points while Lori Paulits and Megan Schafer each added six points.
The Redskins led 14-8 at the end of one quarter and 24-11 at halftime before going on a 27-10 second-half tear.
Continental Conference
Central Bucks East 52, Quakertown 23
The Patriots continued to roll in SOL play, moving one step closer to a perfect conference season with a convincing win over the Panthers. Melissa Remmey led a balanced East attack with 10 points while Courtney McManus added nine and Laura Aseltine, seven points.
Lauren Starzecky led the Panthers with 13 points.
East led 9-4 at the end of one quarter and extended that lead to 20-8 by halftime on its way to the big win.
Central Bucks West 53, Pennridge 35
Jen Fabian led the Bucks in scoring with 11 points while teammate Kathryn Peluso added 10 points and seven rebounds. For the Rams, Jessie Dominic led the way with nine points while Jen Cooley added seven.
The Bucks seized control of the game early, sprinting to a 17-4 lead at the end of one quarter and going into halftime with a 25-13 lead.
Central Bucks South 71, Hatboro-Horsham 34
The Titans took a 26-16 lead into halftime and then blew the game wide open with a 23-3 third quarter burst. Ginny Edwards led the Titans with 14 points while Alysha Lofton added 12 points and Kate McMenamin, 10 points. Chrissy James led the Hatters with 11 points.
American Conference
Plymouth Whitemarsh 54, Upper Merion 52 (OT)
The Vikings extended the Colonials to overtime, thanks to a Cassidy Koenig three-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining that knotted the score 48-48. Koenig finished the game with 17 points, which included five three-pointers. Kristina O’Sullivan added 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Gabby Schumacker scored a game-high 20 points for PW. She also had six rebounds. Lex Borkowski had a monster game under the backboard, pulling down 19 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Erin Martin added 13 points and six rebounds while Maya Thomas had six points and five rebounds.
The Colonials led 25-16 at the intermission before the Vikings staged a second-half comeback to knot the score.
Cheltenham 69, Upper Moreland 32
Ciara 'CC' Andrews scored 21 points in three quarters of action, including 11 in a torrid third quarter that saw the Panthers outscore the Golden Bears 20-2. Christina Coleman added 17 points and Shayla Peoples, 13 points for the Panthers, who clinched their 23rd conference crown in the last 25 years under coach Bob Schaefer.
Katie Costello and Erin Dixon led the Golden Bears with 10 points each.
The Panthers led 14-6 at the end of one quarter and then went on a 27-10 second-quarter tear to go into halftime with a 41-16 lead.
Upper Dublin 51, Wissahickon 23
