Hurwitz Signs with New Hampshire

On Feb. 4, 2011, Council Rock South senior Taylor Hurwitz was recognized for signing a letter of intent to accept a lacrosse scholarship to the University of New Hampshire.

Taylor Hurwitz, University of New Hampshire (Lacrosse)
Major: Double majoring in business or communications and pre-law
Final list of colleges: New Hampshire, Delaware, James Madison, Massachusetts
Reasons for choosing New Hampshire: “I loved my teammates. They were great – I fit in perfectly with the team. I loved my coaches, and even though you’re not supposed to base your decision on coaches, they’re awesome. It’s also a strong school academically. Everything I ever wanted in a college was there, and it seemed right.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate lacrosse? “Lacrosse has been my entire life. My dad introduced me to the sport when I was very young – in second or third grade, and I have been playing ever since. I have been playing club for years, and I just grew to love the sport. My life without it would not be the same. Continuing to play in college was always a goal of mine. To play Top 25 D-1 is just an awesome accomplishment. It’s a dream come true. I cannot wait until next year.”
How did you get your start playing goalie? “When I was in second or third grade, my sister (Madison Hurwitz), who is two years older – her team didn’t have a goalie, and I was the only sibling on the sidelines who would offer to jump right in. I got in with all my dad’s ice hockey equipment, and I just loved it.”
Former Council Rock South coach Kara DiMarco says: “She’s meant so much to our program. Her family is such a strong unit and is very supportive on and off the field, and that’s really important when you have an athlete like Taylor – to be able to support her and take her to all of the tournaments and her Phantastix and club games and taking her up and down the East Coast to play lacrosse shows her dedication and her family’s dedication.”
“When she came in as a freshman, it was huge for us. There were years where we didn’t have the caliber of field play to get us to the playoffs, but Taylor kept us in it. A combination of team structure and her leading the defense – she really made an impact over the past three years.”
Council Rock South coach Erica Hellerstein says: “One of the greatest things about Taylor is she has been playing goalie for such a long time. I used to be a youth ref, and I actually reffed a couple of games when she was in fifth or sixth grade, and even then, she really loved playing goalie. She wants to continue getting better, and she wants to continue to excel at it. When you have a player that’s really interested in being in that position and excelling at that position, it makes your whole program better, and she’s also one of our leaders on the field, especially this year as a captain.”
