Rock South Falls to Whippets in OT

#12 Downingtown West 50, #10 Council Rock North 49 (OT)

The Golden Hawks saw their season come to an end when they fell to the Whippets in overtime in a District One playback game for the ninth and final state playoff berth on Friday night at Wissahickon High School.
Making the loss especially devastating was the fact that the Golden Hawks – who jumped out to a 10-4 first-quarter lead - still led by five with under two minutes remaining in regulation.
Elizabeth Coyne, despite being fouled, connected on a basket to make it a 40-37 game, and although the Whippets pulled down the offensive rebound of Coyne’s missed foul shot, the Golden Hawks came up with a defensive stop but then misfired on the front end of a one-and-one at the other end. The Whippets made it hurt when Coyne, who scored a team-high 22 points, buried a trey to knot the score.
The Golden Hawks scored the first two points of overtime, but that was the last thing that went their way as an apparent steal resulted instead in a pair of Whippet foul shots to knot the score. It was an omen of things to come as the Whippets outscored the Golden Hawks 10-7 to close out the OT.
“We shouldn’t have gone to overtime with a five-point lead,” coach Monica Stolic said.
Alex Wheatley led all scorers with 25 points – she scored 14 of those points in the first half. Alexis Hofstaedter added 11 points. The Golden Hawks closed out the year with a 19-8 record.
