The 2011 Class AA Flyers Cup second round action produced a pair of winners from the Suburban High School Hockey League as both # 1 seed Council Rock South and # 2 seed Central Bucks East earned hard fought victories. Rock South bested Perkiomen Valley 3-2, while CB East defeated Conestoga 3-1.

The 2011 Class AA Flyers Cup second round action eliminated a pair of SHSHL teams. # 5 Central Bucks South lost to # 13 Downingtown East – 5-2, while # 19 William Tennent lost to # 3 Washington Township – 5-3.

The SHSHL began the Flyers Cup with eight Class AA teams and three Class A teams. And after two rounds, the lone survivors are Council Rock South, CB East, and North Penn in the Class AA division. There are no surviving teams from the SHSHL Class A division.

Central Bucks East Patriots 3 – Conestoga Pioneers 1

Central Bucks East began its Flyers Cup quest with a single goal in mind – win the Flyers Cup.

“Our first goal was to win the (SHSHL) championship, and the second goal was to win the Flyers Cup,” said Central Bucks East head coach Ken Latchum after the Pats defeated the Pioneers at the Warwick Ice Arena. “We won the league title (in a two-game sweep of Pennsbury), and now all of our focus in on winning the Flyers Cup.

“We have another game on Tuesday, and we will have a light workout on Monday,” added Latchum. “We need to keep the team together and loose.”

Central Bucks East will meet # 10 seed Boyertown on Tuesday (3/15/11) in a game to be played at the Warwick Ice Arena. The opening face-off is at 7 pm.

“I told the kids after the game that we just have to worry about what is in our own back yard,” said Latchum. “We don’t know anything about Boyertown, but we just need to focus on the way that we play. If we do that, we will be fine.”

Boyertown won its first round Flyers Cup contest with a 4-0 victory over # 7 Central York.

“We really don’t know anything about Boyertown,” said Patriot Captain Tyler McIntosh. “There is no scouting report – but we really don’t need one.

“We’re really happy that we are still playing ice hockey,” added McIntosh – one of nine seniors on the CB East roster. “Winning the Flyers Cup means everything to us, and we have to be ready to play each and every game.”

The Patriots needed to be ready against a Conestoga team that routed Neshaminy 8-0 in its opening round Flyers Cup game.

CB East took a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Nick Patullo with an assist from McIntosh. The Patriots extended the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Tom Schloendorn in the second period – and Schloendorn scored an empty net goal to conclude the scoring at 3-1.

Senior Patriot goaltender Justin Goila was superb in goal with 19 saves and kept the Pioneers off the board until 4:32 of the final period.

“We needed a strong game out of “Stoney” tonight,” said Latchum. “You can’t win playoff hockey games without a good effort by your goaltender. And we got a good effort from him tonight.

“We had some chances to score more goals than we did tonight,” added Latchum. “It was basically a one-goal game, and we came out on the good side of the score.”

And one giant step closer to the Patriot goal of a Flyers Cup championship.

Council Rock South 3 – Perkiomen Valley 2

Council Rock South had to rally from an early one-goal deficit to defeat Perkiomen Valley 3-2 in a game that was played at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center. The Golden Hawks will now face North Penn in the next round of Flyers Cup play on Tuesday (3/15/11) in a game to be played at BCI with a 7 pm face-off.

“Perkiomen Valley came out flying in the first period,” said Council Rock South head coach Joe Houk. “They played very aggressive hockey – very smart hockey. But when push came to shove, we took total control of the game by the third period.

“We were off for two weeks, and we came out flat,” added Houk. “It is tough when you don’t have games for that length of time – you can practice but it isn’t the same as playing a game.”

After falling behind 1-0, the Golden Hawks got on the board in the first period on a goal by leading scorer Patrick Grilli. Grilli was assisted on the score by Mitch Vaysman and Vince Primavera.

Rock South pushed the lead to 3-1 on a pair of goals scored by Kyle Walter. Zack Goodman assisted on the first Walter goal, while Grilli assisted on the second Walter goal.

“The next game should be very interesting,” said Houk as the Hawks prepare of a rematch against a North Penn team that handed Rock South its only SHSHL loss this season. “It should be a very good game, and there is definitely a revenge factor from our side.”

Washington Township 5 – William Tennent 3

William Tennent took a 3-2 lead into the third period and almost stunned # 3 seed Washington Township before losing 5-3.

“I have nothing but pride for the way that our team played tonight,” said William Tennent head coach Nick D’Aurizio. “We had a very good team against the ropes, but we just ran out of gas in the third period.”

William Tennent also played the game without the services of the senior Eric HorroX who missed due to personal reasons.

“Eric was missed, but (freshman) Dan Deegan played lights out in goal for us,” said D’Aurizio. “We lose Eric next year, but this was a great way for Dan to start his career for us.”

Deegan – who had only one start this entire season for the Panthers – was brilliant in goal with 40 saves.

William Tennent had forged the 3-2 lead on a pair of goals by AJ Carbone and a solo goal by Cameron Goodell. The Panthers, though, were shut out in the third period and could not secure the win.

“This game was oddly a successful end to our season,” said D’Aurizio. “We are very hopeful for the future of this program.”

Downingtown East 5 – Central Bucks South 2

Central Bucks South saw its season come to a close with a 5-2 loss to the Cougars in a game played at the Warwick Ice Arena.

The Titans closed to within a goal at 2-1 in the second period, but Downingtown East scored the next four goals to pull away. The Cougars – the # 13 seed – opened Flyers Cup play with a 7-2 victory over # 20 Council Rock North.
