On Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2010, Souderton senior Liz Parkins was recognized at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play softball at Shippensburg University.
Liz Parkins – Shippensburg University (Softball)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Shippensburg, Lebanon Valley, Moravian, Bloomsburg
Reasons for choosing Shippensburg: “My sister (Emily Parkins) is there, and I really liked the campus. Each time I visited, I could see myself there. The team is really close-knit, and I love the coach.
“Shippensburg also has almost any major I might decide on, and I tried my best to compare sports and academics because if I get hurt, I want to be sure I can be there for the next four years.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate softball become a reality for you? “When my sister started going through the recruiting process - I was in eighth grade at that point, and ever since I started playing travel softball because that was the goal of travel – to play in college showcases and get recruited.
“Softball is that one thing I love and have a true passion for, and I wanted to pursue it as much as I could and continue it. I’m really excited.”
Coach Courtney Hughes says: “Liz is just a terrific kid. She’s a hard worker, and the girls all respect her. She has been working out since the fall, working with the track team to work on her dynamics. She just always tries to find ways to better herself, and that’s how you know she’ll make a great college athlete. She was recruited as pitcher, but I’m sure she could even play at third base because she has the skills.
“She is hard-nosed in that when she’s in the circle – she doesn’t get fazed by what is going on around her. When she comes in, she’s able to turn that stone coldness off and be a light and that inspiration that the team needs. She just has a way with people. When she’s on the field, when she’s on the bench and in practices, she just has a way of asking for the best out of her teammates without being nasty about it, and you don’t find that all the time.”
